New Investigation of Scientology in France Could Eventually Doom the Church There

We have a breaking news story from our correspondent in Paris, British journalist Jonny Jacobsen. What’s the latest, Jonny?

A French investigating magistrate is pressing charges against Scientology’s Celebrity Centre after a long-running probe into the movement’s activities at a school here.

Also, Cabinet Morice, the law firm representing the plaintiffs, tells The Underground Bunker that two other Scientology organizations are still under investigation.

The Celebrity Centre was placed under formal investigation on December 8 in connection with the activities of the private school, the Institut Aubert just outside Paris.

French lawyer Maître Olivier Morice, speaking to French daily 20 minutes, which broke the story this morning, confirmed that the charges were conspiracy to deceive, illicit commercial practices and the misuse of assets.

This is serious for the CoS which is skating on thin ice over in France. Another criminal conviction (in addition to the one they've already got) could cause the CoS to be shut down over there. France's highest court already has upheld an earlier fraud conviction.

Sorry, did you say that Scientology was found guilty of fraud in France?

And their appeal against the fraud charges failed and that the charges were upheld?

So Scientology is a fraudulent criminal enterprise? Who knew?

Also in France:

In 1978 Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard was convicted in absentia and sentenced to four years in prison for making fraudulent claims that he could cure physical illnesses. Hubbard never returned to France to serve the prison sentence before his death in 1986. The head of the French Church of Scientology was convicted at the same trial and given a suspended one-year prison sentence.[SUP][10]

[/SUP]A 1999 government inquiry committee reporting on the financial aspect of cults[SUP][14][/SUP] recommended dissolving the Church of Scientology because of swindling, complicity of swindling, abuse of trust, and other nefarious activities.
