OEO and I both knew Martin Bentley in actual fact we were all in the SO together albeit for a short time.

He was a lovely fellow and it's so sad that his life of contribution to the cult ended in such a way.

It makes me so angry that the cult treat their valuable human resourse like it does. However, this is what occurs when you have young upstarts with no life experience such as CMO running the show as these individuals have their whole life in front of them and have no reality that people do grow old and need care. THE ELDERLY ARE NOT DOWNSTAT

CMO do NOT realise or for that matter care that there are people who have experience and knowledge to offer and that they could actually learn something from them.

But no .... the CMO individuals are trained to be cold, callous and show no emotion to anyone who is NOT able to give 100% to the cause and heaven forbid able to still think for themselves and speak out. Oh no, you are public enemy number one and hence end up like Martin Bentley.

The tech has not stopped the aging process or bodies getting tired and ill. Why can't people see that they are no different to every other man and woman on the planet, even David Miscavige, he's just a man. There is no magical wand no matter how much money you throw at it. Rant over:angry:

RIP Martin :rose:

I was sad to hear about Martin's death. He would have been relatively young, i.e. in his 70s, if that. I had heard from another ex that he had dementia and his carer was trying to get him into a nursing home. Martin was a big figure at Sydney Org in the 1970s, when I was around; he was the Senior C/S until Jan Hill returned from training at AOSHUK, and continued to there for as long as I was there. He pretty much devoted his life to Scn. He was sharp and witty, but underneath the occasional brittleness he was all warmth.

Panda, I hope your friend the ex who took Martin in will tell us more about what happened.

I knew Martin well. In fact I did contact him when I got out in 2008. He'd been caught in a Nigerian scam and was confused and abrupt, I found out later that he soon became homeless and all that was the precursor to the dementia that was setting in.

I heard that he was asked to leave the CofS Brisbane at one time as per their models he was type 3. Martin had done the old OT levels and the new bridge up to OTV, so of course the org staff thought he was insane and didn't even think that he might have dementia or get him appropriate treatment.

Scientology just isn't a game that ends well for anyone.

I am so very sad to read this.
I did the SHSBC with Martin Bentley at St. Hill in the UK and he was a truly likeable and affable soul. (His wife at the time was Leah (spelling ?).

I did keep in touch with him intermittently for many many years.

How very typical of the twilight years of a Sea Org member to be discarded like a piece of trash. "Fitness Boards" is what it is called. When you cannot produce like a work horse, you are not FIT for the Sea Org !

I hope Cherished sends this to Senator Xenophon along with this other Australian tragedy ~Paul Schobel

I am really sad to hear Martin has died. :bigcry:

I recall many long chats & laughs with this kind, caring gentleman.

The way Martin was treated was disgusting.

The cofs will keeping treating their elderly members this way until they are stopped.

Maybe they need to know exactly how HUBBARD DIED.

Hubbard had available money and people with an investment on keeping the circumstances well hidden but he died a very sad and lonely death indeed.

Lurkers, DM lied to you about how Hubbard died, he was hidden and pumped full of drugs and shoved away in a mobile home to slowly rot, and rot he did, with normal body degradation ... the autopsy report and other reports are well worth reading.

You are all being conned and Martin found that out the hard way as many others have and will, there are no Clears or OT's, just an awful lot of greed and a complete lack of caring.

Please get out while you still can out of respect for those that left it too late having spent decades working hard for the cult for nothing.

It is a very sad moment. I knew Martin quite well. He was the lead auditor in the Sydney day HGC when I did my internship in the late '70s and went on to become an HGC auditor. If I remember correctly, Martin was a radio announcer before his scientology days, and had one on those deep baritone voices. After I had become an auditor, Martin would have most of the time, PCs booked in up to four weeks in advance while the rest of us, eight to twelve auditors and interns, had no idea who our next PC would be. He was an excellent auditor.

There are many stories, but there is one which stands out. There is a a former NZ airline pilot by the name of Bruce Cathie, who wrote a series of books concerning his discoveries of an energy grid pattern over the Earth. After I had read his book, the topic came up in one of our discussions, and he asked to borrow the book.

A few days later, Martin pulled me aside and in strictest confidence told me that when he did his OT levels, one was required to be exterior outside the planet and observe it. When he did it, he saw an energy grid pattern over the Earth. This BTW, is the first time I have mentioned it.

It wasn't until Feral came onto ESMB in mid 2008, annd gave me Martin's phone number that I was able to contact him. I senesed that he didn't feel comfortable speaking to me and I subsequently discovered that he had been working parttime for Canberra Org.

R.I.P. Martin until we meet again.

David.

Yes, David, Martin remained a scientologist to the end. It is sad and ironic that his only real friends in his time of need were all Ex-scientologists.

The information I have is that Debbie Champion from the Sydney AO contacted his ex-wife to tell her.

I sort of thought that was a bit strange since Martin left her after joining the sea org and taking up with another sea org member before being rpfed...

Does anyone know any details?

They contacted Margaret, his wife prior to Renee. This was a few weeks after he had died and the funeral had been held. Martin had no money when he passed so to spare him the shame of a pauper's funeral Margaret paid for the service and his cremation. Although things didn't end well between them, there was love and ARC at one stage and she felt strongly that he deserved dignity in death.

Martin had dementia, and after years of COPD his heart finally gave out. My memories are all from a very long time ago, and from a different point of view, but they are of an intelligent, funny man who was fun and loving to his small daughter.

There is going to be a memorial at Sydney AO at the start of August.

Thanks, Angle Bent. Unfortunately, many of his old friends would be persona non grata at AOSH ANZO, still we'll undoubtedly remember Martin fondly and celebrate him in our own private ways.

I remember Margaret with great fondness too, just in case you chance to speak with her. :)

You're right Panda Termint. It's one of the most heart breaking aspects of being an "ex" and still having friends and/or family who are still in there. Sitting 6 ft from family at a funeral and have them ignore you because they're in and you're out is just plain pathetic.

I was actually quite surprised when I heard that a memorial was being held at the AO.

It might possibly be because of this thread....

I guess I had been misinformed, I thought Martin was still "in" but that is obviously not the case.
It is just sickening to think that someone would die in a paupers grave because of no money and years of service is not even acknowledged... Gosh, even the most stingy and mean employers give someone a cup with their name on it for "years of service".
I don't think I ever knew Margaret, is she the mother of Martin's daughter?
I guess they couldn't have been "straight" with Renee, just as gutless as always, and beating around the bush - maybe she would have been a bit more forthcoming if the communication hadn't been so "covert"....
Well, at least now Martin can rest in peace, and heaven forbid if there really is such a thing as reincarnation, lets hope he is strong enough NOT to get back into that cult!!!!

Yes I meant that perhaps they were shamed into holding a service for a man who dedicated his life to the 'church'....he was so well known.

Yes, that is heartbreaking and so terribly wrong.

I would have thought that in this situation love & compassion would have prevailed. :heartflower::heartflower:

I have just been told that Martin Bentley has died, apparently he was in a nursing home somewhere on the Gold Coast in QLD.

Have just read this. (I'm a newbie). I feel so sad to hear of his death. I knew Martin and Margaret well back in the seventies when I was involved with Sydney Org. Martin you were a good friend and a true gentleman. Rest in peace.

I ran into Martin and Renee a few years ago when they were in Melbourne, maybe 2006. He seemed to be the same guy I'd always known at the time, and that goes all the way back to 1975 when he delivered a lunchtime lecture in Sydney while I was on my first course.

Martin delivered my first auditing setups, the Class VIII section of the (pre-NED) Drug Rundown. He was a very polished auditor indeed.

He had a genuineness that got him into trouble occasionally, a trait to be admired. But I think I know why he stayed in all those years. I recall him saying during one of his lectures, "For all I know, Scientology may be the biggest con on the planet. But if it is, they've fooled me too." He was always aware of the alternatives but he thrived on the challenge.

In auditing, in C/Sing and in living life, Martin walked a fine line. And he walked it with rare finesse. He was also a master of the OT joke, those slow creepers that only hit you with their full force years later, when you're finally aware enough to see all the ramifications.

Until we meet again, old pal.

And I've known of an excommunicated ( not declared ) sibling of a deceased person being told if they came to the service they would be escorted off the property.

And I've been to services while I was in that friends of the deceased who were declared attended with no comment from anyone. Both happened at the same org.

Strange group.
