Church of Scientology files late return amid crackdown on financial reporting laws

Churches are spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to comply with a new crackdown on charities' financial reporting standards.

The Church of Scientology filed their annual returns last week, more than 10 months overdue, and two days after media enquiries. They received nearly $1.4m, and spent just under $600,000.

Charities who spend more than $1m per year are being forced to open up their books, in some cases for the first time, under new laws which came into effect this month.

The Mormon church are among the churches being audited under new financial reporting standards.

The Charities Service say the new laws will bring greater transparency in the sector, but churches say they are having to spend up to $100,000 on auditing fees.

The Scientologists, who attracted attention from documentary makers in the United States for their unconventional practices, were also late filing their returns in 2012.

Church secretary Mike Ferris said their accounts were delayed due to their move into a newly restored $16m heritage-listed building in central Auckland.

"We had to relocate our premises and that interrupted a whole lot of things."

Ferris, who has been a Scientologist for several decades, declined to comment on his arrangement with the Charities Services, adding their communications were private.

He said the church didn't spend enough to be independently audited and had never been previously audited.

Possibly the game is changing for Non Profit Scam Corporations hiding behind the ole "Religious Cloak"?

Ron Miscavige admits he had special privledges cuz he was related to the leader...and he got a $100,000 for a house after he blew - that alone can prove inurement / enurement...the illegal stuff Scientology does that yanks the ole tax exempt status.

I love Ferris's "why" - "Honest, we have just moved and that's why we can't obey the laws of the land for 14 months. But we have the universe's best Administration Technology and that's why we are expanding so amazingly throughout the known universe and beyond." :puke:

Pure comedy gold if it wasn't destroying so many lives of otherwise decent people.:bigcry:

    Nice pic of Mike Ferris.

Note that look of his - one eye beady eye half shut, the other focussed on you. It's his cherished idea that this look is intimidating to others and that it gives him an edge of some sort. In fact it is so childish as to be laughable.

What a load of shit that the reason for the late filing was "moving". Factually and actually the NZ C of S has always been late filing with any compliance/annual reporting to the Companies Office and more latterly, the Charities Commission.

Some years they have filed 3x (THREE) years together because they were so messed up with returning annual reports. The cult has been getting away with this for over a decade - probably more like 20 years (I'd need to check my research to confirm).

The above facts have always been a legal vulnerability with the NZ C Of S. They have been in violation of the legal requirements for the Incorporated Societies Act which requires societies to file annual reports, on time. One of the reasons the cult has gotten away with it is that the resources of the government agency are stretched and they have been unable to enforce compliance.

The relatively new Charities Commission is a different beast and is doing its best to keep the charity sector honest.

Mike, I am watching. You have legal out-rudiments. Ohhhhh. Nothing new and you damn well know it. The facts are all public record. And Mike, stop lying. It isn't how you were raised. Your core values have become very warped. Snigger and sneer all you like at me but good luck looking in the mirror and truly facing what you have become. You are protecting something is no longer able to be protected.
