Scientology TV kicks off with Miscavige monologue, settles into familiar propaganda

We’ve seen a lot of video of Scientology leader David Miscavige over the years. We’ve lost track of how many Scientology events we’ve watched him address.

So we can tell you from experience that the David Miscavige who kicked off last night’s premiere of Scientology TV played things a lot cooler than [...]

But John P. at the Bunker believes that CoS made a mistake by having Miscavige out there at all:

Strategically, having Miscavige be a front person is a huge mistake.

On one level, they do need a spokesperson. There has to be a human front to a religion. You don't care that there's not a store with a person in it when you buy stuff at Amazon, but when you're "buying" a religion that will make you feel better about life, you definitely want to feel that you have a relationship with someone at the organization who has their shit more together than you. And Scientology currently doesn't have anybody who can fill that role. They're not going to bring Guillaume Leserve or Heber Jentzsch out of cold storage. The celebrity field is pretty bare, and not just because they have rapists and buffoons in that cadre. "Blinky" Yingling has had her day in the sun during the Aquarium land deal hearings, and completely trashed her public credibility.

On the other hand, Miscavige is not that person. He's in his mid-50s, and he's got to appeal to prime cult demographics: according to various surveys, something like half of cult members join when in college. And most of the rest are 20-somethings. A guy like that, especially one who dresses in a suit and tie, an increasingly rare anachronism for most in that demographic, has absolutely nothing they want to hear and is not the person they want to hear it from.

Miscavige has something like 23,000 likes on his personal Facebook page. The current crop of internet cult gurus like Teal Swan and Bentinho Massaro have hundreds of thousands, and they've only been at it for a couple of years. They're raking in $10 or $20 million a year apiece, which doesn't sound like a lot compared to Scientology's $200 million or so, but they've only been at it for a couple of years, while Scientology has been at it for over a half century. And they're pulling in those numbers with only a handful of staff, not with the bloated ranks of the fake navy called the Sea Org. Big cults are passe. Having a TV channel (instead of a free YouTube channel) doesn't change that.

I'll explore in more detail in a blog post tomorrow what strategic issues are driving the unprecedented decision to make Miscavige a more public face, but it seems it's almost by default that he's on camera because there's simply nobody else who can do the job.

John has one of the best blogs concerning Scientology, worth checking out for anyone who hasn't read it:

The “mistake” is that Miscavage is so psycho.... he doesn’t think anyone else can do the job.

Miscavage put the other execs in the hole for years now....

He has basically positioned himself as the new LRH....

The Cult does not run off policy.... but rather is run by Miscavage...
