The Battle of Portland

A Scientology Video: In May and June of 1985, thousands of Scientologists rallied to the cause of religious freedom, for themselves and for all men. Portland, Oregon, is where they took their stand and proclaimed anew the inalienable right of men to their own belief. (The text is not mine AK)

Historical reference that ties it in neatly with the Sea Org. A piece of my countries History as wel as Englands. Back than it would appear SO members had some knowledge of great sea battles or at least the organizers.

The naval Battle of Portland, or Three Days' Battle took place during 28 February-2 March 1653 (Old style), during the First Anglo-Dutch War, when the fleet of the Commonwealth of England under General at Sea Robert Blake was attacked by a fleet of the Dutch Republic under Lieutenant-Admiral Maarten Tromp escorting merchant shipping through the English Channel. The battle failed to settle supremacy of the English Channel, although both sides claimed victory, and ultimate control over the Channel would only be decided at the Battle of the Gabbard which allowed the English to blockade the Dutch coast until the Battle of Scheveningen, where Admiral Maarten Tromp would meet his fate at the hands of an English musket ball. As such, it can be considered a slight setback for the English nation and another example of Dutch superiority regarding pure seamanship at the time. It also illustrated England's drive to control the seas, which would ultimately allow it to become the prime maritime power of the world.

Was that Jon Batson singing?

I never heard of this. What was the beef?

It had a happy ending. I'm so glad mankind was saved.

I must have had to wash and wax my truck that day. Otherwise I'd have been there.

It was very clear that Scientology was being attacked because of it's workability and expansion...

Obviously.....:eyeroll:

When you step on a clam is the sound "squick squick squick" or "squish squish squish"?

Maybe both.

Scientologies Woodstock! I remember a friend of mine attended this. I was pretty well out when this happened.

Poor uninformed, deluded people, including myself at that time. I wonder how many of them are still in the cult? I wonder what kind of show there would be if an event like this was planned again? Bet most would be no shows and there would be more anons there then cult members.

Thanks for the thread. I was wondering about this event.

I forgot to add the battle of Portland in here - so I am going to insert it here. Sorry for any confusion. OK so in 85 I was a kid still (teens) and there was a big briefing called to PAC base people. At that time, my mother and brother were also on the PAC Base, uncommon for us to all be there. Anyways, before the briefing I had this premonition that something was very wrong and i thought the church was getting closed down. I was kind of excited about it, cause I thought I would have more freedom. Oh well. So a big court case and anyone who could was to go down and protest. I thought we would be gone for a month. That was what I remember being told.

In reading your history you said that there were 2 months of protests. I thought it was just a week of protest at the most.

I was there for the first week or so and then got called back to LA to continue work on the Mission Earth book.

What happened was that a scientology registrar in Portland told a girl that scientology would cure her bad eyesight in order to get her money.

The lawsuit was legit but the CoS resorted to it's usual devious tactics of discrediting her and turning it into an attack on all religion rather than a clear-cut case of fraud which it actually was.

I think that the tactical surprise of the huge demonstration and all of the media involvement kind of took the system by surprise and so they backed down for political reasons.

Nowadays, people are on to their BS and they are not afraid of or intimidated by the church and they can't get away with the crap that they did back then.

I noticed that the narrator claims that Stevie Wonder phoned in to offer his support. That is a false claim.
What happened was they were having a free concert -- Edgar Winter, Stanley Clarke, Chic Corea, etc. -- and Edgar called Stevie from a phone that they had rigged up on the stage. I watched him do it.
If you listen to the conversation Stevie even mentions something about calling him at that time of night.

BTW, Did you catch the glimpse of Amanda Ambrose at 2:48 of the third video? Lovely lady. :rose:

What do you mean, "work on the Mission Earth book"?

Just moments ago I heard a rumor that Hubbard didn't actually write those books. Did you write it?! :omg:

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That first video ... what a great theme song!!!!! In spite of upper management being schmucks, inspite of all of the abuses, in spite of the Cof$ being in the wrong ... looking at that video, I really, really, really admire the spirit of those who showed up, who, in their heart of hearts, were showing up and whatever the sacrifice to defend freedom of religion/the 1st ammendment. Of course, I'm sure that the actual court case had little to do with that and a whole lot more to do with the abuse done to one particular member.

According to the late Robert Vaughn Young (you can google as well as I), The Battlefield Earth books were written by Hubbard and edited by Robert Vaughn Young with Hubbard's approval on every edit.

That is correct.
The late John Mustard and myself were proofreaders on the project.
(That would be the Mission Earth books. Not sure about Battlefield Earth, but I assume that's what you meant.) :coolwink:

yes, that's what I meant.

Was John Mustard related to Roz Mustard? Do you know what ever became of her?

Indeed, it was.
He was writing and playing and singing the whole time.
If I remember correctly, he produced a whole album from it entitled, Hey, Bud Clark.
I found a little bit on it here.

What do you know about Jon currently?

I still have his first album (autographed, no less) in storage.
