I think the first CVT tranny was on a tiny Subaru, I think. Might have been a Honda, but I think Subaru. was certainly some little asian shitbox. Too damn lazy to google it.:coolwink:

I thought it was some Detroit POS I rented.

I just remember at freeway speeds the poor little thing screamed louder than a 3 speed Tercel ( speaking of penalty box cars ! )
I felt at 70 MPH about as secure as if I'd been in a Smart Car at 100 MPH.

I try to avoid the Oregon State Car ( Subaru ) at all costs. I don't even know anybody that admits ever having owned one.

Tend to like Honda's - well most Honda's.

I didn't want to get into lugging the engine or how closely spaced the top 2 gears can be.

And, yes, 2 speed differentials do make a difference. 4 speed transmission becomes 8 speed !

I remember right, in about 1957 Austin Healy put an electric overdrive switch in the 4 speed manual of their 3000 ( ? ) model which made for a somewhat effective 6 speed.

Shifting gears AND flipping the OD switch at the same time was tricky.

I thought a few years ago there was a car with a variable speed transmission - I rented one & didn't like it at all.
What WAS that thing ?

Was that the DAF (a small car made in Holland in the 1970s?) One of my teachers at school had one. It wa supposed to be very economical though I don't know any details. I believe Volvo bought the company out and abandoned the project.

I must congratulate our Leader for introducing the 440 / 432 conversation !

It seems to have brought some serious & most useful information on tuning by real professional musicians !

This has become very interesting as it gets into the subtle nuances of making an instrument perform correctly.

Hopefully soon a whole different range of instruments will be brought into the mix & an online band - if not orchestra - will be formed ( fixed? ) right here on the Apollo Thread !

Isn't that exciting ?

I believe DAF was the first and this was taken over by volvo.

I suspect they havn't been fully developed yet, but here's a good one.

I think this "being nicer to Lakey" thing must have been just a sarcastic joke by whoever came up with that idea. Why would anyone need to be nicer to anyone and what makes Lakey so special that people need to ignore their own, personal self-respect and support him in his sad, poor, badly researched, self-absorbed drivel? No, man, thanks but no thanks.

Instead of bending over backwards for any pretentious prick, I prefer to remain who I am. In real life as well on the net: I do "stick my fingers in wounds" that don't make sense to me, just to see if they're real or not. If they're real "wounds": Fine, I can learn a lot from having had my fingers in that. If they're nor real wounds, that's fine too. I've learned that there's no "there" there, so, in that case, nobody else needs to waste their time with that.

I know some people fear or even hate me for who I am, but so what? Other people love and appreciate me for that.

Several car manufacturers have experimented with that CVT concept, BMW and Audi for example, but it's not yet ripe for the masses. Vespa and other manufacturers are already successful with that concept, though.

About that 4-speed/8-speed stuff: I really loved my old, Russian Lada Niva! In normal road traffic, that thing was sub-comfortable, but when there was no road, that thing was unbeatable. I still remember when the yuppie-owner of a brand new, large 'n strong BMW let his engine howl to challenge me for a "traffic-light race". What an arrogant, worthless wimp, challenging me with an engine 5 times stronger than mine.

Anyway, my Lada had permanent 4WD. So I took him up on his challenge. I engaged Differential lock and switched transmission from "normal" to "off-road", which gave a remarkable extra-portion of acceleration. :lol: I won every distance between 2 traffic-lights, and then that BMW-wimp gave up and bailed out.

I loved my Lada. No matter how steep the mountains or how flooded the pastures were, that vehicle went everywhere.

There's only one thing it never was: Pretentious.

I like Gizmos last two posts about cars and trucks. They are excellent posts! I am not really a car and truck guy but I subscribe to Consumer Reports, Car Driver, Road and Track and Auto New, a detroit newspaper like publication tracks the industry from a business point of views such as sales volumes of all the companies as well as technical progress from all the companies.. I can't work on cars myself, I just read about them. My son can and did work on them extensively when he and I both lived at home.

On the CVT's, Continuously variable transmissions, several companies have come out with those but the CVT's have some stumbling blocks. The thing is that the US government is mandating extremely high gas mileage so the CVT's were calibrated along the lines of high gas mileage as their primary goal. If someone is driving for high fuel economy they probably work well.

A problem arises if a guy either needs fast acceleration to do a lane change or even worse, if a guy routinely drives fast, always taking off from a stop light with fast acceleration. For this type of driving, the car will often stumble or falter. The reason is as I stated above. The transmission is rigged for low rpm's to conserve gas but the owner needs to burn gas to accelerate. This amounts to the owner trying to override the normal operation of the transmission. This leads to flat spots and lags in performance when the CVT is ordered to accelerate fast. Because of that CVT's started to wane in popularity a few years back. Now, they are almost totally dead due to a further advance in technology.

Besides multi speed transmissions, about three years ago, the high priced luxury cars, mainly from Germany began making a new type of automatic shift mechanism. Previously, ever since automatics appeared in the late 1930's on the Oldsmobile, automatics eliminated direction shifting. Shifting had to go through something called a torque converter. It was sort of like a glorified oil bath. In the old days when most cars were still stick but a few had automatics, the automatics where called Slush Boxes, especially the Dynaflow drive by Buick.

The gears got shifted but the torque converter resulted in a lot of slippage and heat build up. The smoother the shift, the more waste in the torque converter. For this reason, stick shift cars got better gas mileage and accelerated faster than automatics. Stick shift actually changed gears without requirement any torque converter. The torque converter was probably one of the greatest inventions of all time in the automobile industry. It lasted from about 1937 to 2014 about 77 years!

However, around 2012 or 2013, the automatic stick shift, called automatic clutch transmissions, I believe, first appeared on a few luxury briands, Audi, BMW and Mercedes mainly. Since VW owns Audi, they even put some of these automatic clutch transmission on some models of the VW.

This new breakthrough in transmissions gives the best of both worlds. Any car with an automatic clutch will accelerate faster than a car with a stick shift because the automatic clutch can shift gears electronically faster than the most skilled drivers can shift a clutch manually. Now here is the kicker, the cars with the automatic clutch also get better gas mileage on the highway than cars with a stick shift. The reason why concerns only gear ratios selected by the manufacturers for highway driving on highways with rolling hills. The manufacturers chose the gear ratios to be lower on the stick shift cars than on the automatic clutch cars, thus the automatic clutch cars get significantly higher mileage in highway driving.

Anyway, the automatic clutch cars were such a huge upgrade from the torque converter transmissions plus they increased gas mileage so within a year or two the automatic clutch his replaced the torque converter at all prices levels of cars from cheapest to most expensive and the CVT transmssion no longer has a reason for existing and I believe it is already out of production because an automatic clutch transmission gives the best possible performance and best possible gas mileage. You go into any large car dealer today and it is extremely difficult to find a car with manual shift. Usually the biggest dealerships will have only one or two stick shifts on their lot.

My POS rental car was the Dodge Caliber - made from 2007 to 2012 ( or there abouts )!

"The Dodge Caliber offers a continuously variable transmission (dubbed CVT2 by Dodge) sourced from Jatco (a Nissan subsidiary), the second DaimlerChrysler model to employ this technology after the Mercedes-Benz A-Class. It uses a four-cylinder 1.8-2.4 L World gasoline engine, designed jointly by Chrysler, Mitsubishi, and Hyundai.

The car features an optional electronically controlled all-wheel drive system with variable torque at speeds of 25 to 65 mph (40 to 105 km/h) for optimal handling.

The Caliber rides on a heavily modified GS platform, co-designed with Mitsubishi Motors. The modified GS platform is now called the JS platform by Chrysler for mid-size cars and PM/MK for compact cars. It shares a portion of the platform with the Mitsubishi Lancer, but is most similar to the Jeep Compass and Jeep Patriot. The Caliber wheels have a 5-hole pattern with a 114.3 mm bolt circle ".

After I've visited the museum for ethnology in Berlin, especially the music department, I was blown away at 1st. But then I thought: OK, China, India etc just didn't have defined tone frequencies at that time, but really, how much different is that from all the string-bending I do on a daily basis?

I've played a fretless guitar once, and found it inspiring and demanding at the same time, but I'm conservative enough to prefer fretted instruments, most of the times. Although I wouldn't want to miss my fretless bass guitar. :coolwink:

I thought I remembered VW having an interesting clutch arrangement fairly early on......

Marketed as the Volkswagen Automatic Stickshift, the three speed manual transmission was connected to a vacuum-operated automatic clutch. The top of the gear shift was designed to easily depress and activate an electric switch, i.e. when engaged by the drivers hand. When pressed, the switch operated a 12 volt solenoid in turn operating the vacuum clutch, thus disengaging the clutch and allowing shifting between gears. With the driver's hand removed from the gearshift, the clutch would re-engage automatically. The transmission was also equipped with a torque converter, allowing the car to idle in gear, like an automatic. The torque converter was operated by transmission fluid. This would allow the car to stop in any gear and start from a standing stop in any gear.

The Autostick debuted on the 1968 Volkswagen Beetle and Karmann Ghia at mid-model year along with a fully independent rear suspension that debuted in August 1968 for the 1969 model year. VW ended Autostick production with the 1976 model year.

Somebody else can do the CORRECTLY utilized and geared manual transmission vs automatic transmission in acceleration & efficiency.

Longer conversation than I care to have with other than a certified car nut.

( NASCAR & many other ( not all ) race cars still prefer manual selection of gears. )

Ghee, how naive are you? Any good owner of a decent car-workshop should be able to weld up their own car from scratch. I prefer those who can and do. Pseudo-"informative" papers mean nothing to me, I always go for the real professionals. If you want to know which car has the best MPG ratio, don't look at the glitzy papers, look at the courier or taxi entrepreneurs. They know which car gives 'em the best bang for their buck. Newspapers, and glitzy magazines even more so, write whatever they're payed for.

I can't work on cars myself, I just read about them.

CVTs certainly aren't "totally dead", they aren't even fully evolved, yet.

Automatic: Yeah, I drove about a million kilometers with that. Extremely pleasant during traffic jams. But: That convenience comes for a price: Right, It goes right to your gasoline bill, because any physical form of action or conversion requires energy, especially an automatic transmission.

German rule of thumb: Experienced drivers add 1-2 liters of gasoline to their calculations for every hundred kilometers driven on an automatic, and experience proves that rule to be true.

I can't relate to automatic. I like stick shift and always have.

And it's less likely anyone would steal a manual transmission since how would they drive it away.......

So, are you saying the law of conservation of mass and energy applies to cars? Not if you are Cheerioatee(tm) Level 666, you don't even need a car. I just postulate my new location and IT comes to ME. The mass remains the same and no energy is expended. Pretty cool, huh:rock:

I've said that I drove approximately 1 million kilometers on automatic, but I also drove a few more millions on stick-shift, because it gave me more bang for my buck. :biggrin:

I played fretless bass on a daily basis for about 5 years. Once your fingers learn what your ear wants it's pretty cool. I tried a fretless Turkish thing that resembled a 12 string banjo with a sauce pot for a resonator. Too much for my meager skills.:coolwink:
