Joey Chait - another $cn goes to jail!

Auctioneer Pleads Guilty to Wildlife Smuggling[/h]

By JOE HARRIS

(CN) - A senior auction administrator of a Beverly Hills, Calif., gallery and auction house pleaded guilty Wednesday on federal charges of conspiring to smuggle $1 million worth of products made from rhinoceros horn, elephant ivory and coral.
Prosecutors say Joseph Chait, 38, personally falsified customs forms by stating that rhinoceros horn and elephant ivory items were made of bone, wood or plastic.
During Asia Week in New York City in or about March 2011, for example, Chait was approached about the potential sale of a carving of Guanyin, an East Asian spiritual figure made from rhinoceros horn, according to court documents. Despite knowing that it was not a genuine antique, Chait and his co-conspirators accepted the rhino carving for consignment, advertised the sale to foreign clients in China and put the rhino carving on the cover of his auction house's catalogue, in connection with an auction of Asian art and antiques.
Court records on Chait's case in New York City do not name the auction house, Internet search results show that Chait ran the I.M. Chait Gallery in Beverly Hills.
After the rhino carving sold at auction for $230,000, prosecutors claim Chait offered to make a false document for the buyer to help the buyer smuggle the item out of the country. The fake invoice falsely stated that the item cost $108.75 and was made of plastic.
According to the DOJ's press release, Chait and his co-conspirators also sold ivory carvings to another foreign customer and provided those carvings to that customer's courier, even after learning that the customer had been arrested in China for smuggling ivory purchased from Chait's auction house.
Prosecutors also claim Chait and his group shipped wildlife items to third-party shippers, who then reshipped the items out of the country to foreign buyers without the required declaration or permits; provided packing materials to foreign wildlife buyers to assist them in hand carrying the wildlife out of the country; and smuggled protected wildlife into the United States without declaration or permits and then sold at auction.
The trade in rhinoceros horn and elephant ivory has been restricted since 1976 under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), a treaty signed by over 170 countries around the world. Trade in protected wildlife such as rhinoceros horn and elephant ivory has been significantly restricted in the last two years as the result of a Presidential Executive Order except for those instances where sellers can prove that the item is a genuine antique that is more than 100 years of age.
"Rhinos and elephants have been on earth for millennia but are now at grave risk due to the illegal wildlife trade," said John C. Cruden, Assistant Attorney General for the Environment and Natural Resources Division, in a statement. "The United States and other destination markets have a special responsibility to help save these beloved creatures from extinction. Those in the auction industry need to be responsible and not turn a blind eye to the fact that trade in protected animal parts is highly regulated."
Chait faces up to five years in prison for conspiring to smuggle wildlife products and up to five years in prison for violating the Lacey Act. Chait's sentencing is scheduled for June 22, 2016.

I can't believe that Isadore (Izzy) Chait and wife Mary Ann both in the Auction business for some 35 years, whales to the Cult and a both OT 8s would let their son be involved in rhino horn smuggling in their family business and possibly get 5 years prison ?

Did the Cult profit and get donations from the slaughter of rhinos who's horns Izzy Chait auctioneers ? OT 8 the highest spiritual state attained !

Sentence in June 22nd for eldest son Joseph Chait.

I think he may be looking at 10 years.
There are two Federal charges, each carrying a 5 year sentence, one of which he's already plead guilty to.
Depends whether they run concurrently or consecutively.
The Scientological question is "What have you done to pull it in?"

But we know that the constant, unrelenting push and pressure to donate large sums to the Scientology criminal cult and the false "status" that accrues from it bears a good share of responsibility.
But the lions share of blame rests with the delusion that Scientology instills, which is "Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law."
Another life, destroyed by Scientology.

It could have been worse, though.

My god, that "UCLA'S Healing Pets" headline burns my eyes beside this photo.

Perhaps the son.....wanted his own money?

Perhaps he "took a shot" and missed.....or won a couple times...and now gets caught?

I imagine it must be tough if one is in a position of getting money from your Cult Parents....or any well to do parents.....that might "dangle a carrot."

Plus, if he went into the Sea Org Cult at a young age......more than likely.....it was his parents that made that seem a positive alternative to a real life.....there by selling him down the river.

Importing ivory and other items from Africa where they are endangered/extinct species. What a rotten thing to do, providing incentives and a way for local Africans to kill more for profit.

From what others here say about Joey, though, he's not that kind of guy. There's more to this, I'm sure.

Could he be that stupid and naive that he was someone else's pawn to do such a horrible thing? :hmm: Or could he have changed that much by becoming that desperate for the sake of scientology?

In the 1800s, entire herds of American buffalo were slaughtered just for their hides and horns. Horrible. They were considered extinct for decades until the ranchers brought them back. (Yay ranchers!) Lots of other animals hunted for their hides and horns weren't so fortunate and went entirely extinct.

Anyone who would knowingly be involved in this sort of disgusting business should have the book thrown at them. Was Joey set up by his own parents? By someone else? There seems to be something more going on here, and it ain't pretty.

The reason they are endangered is more because the African population is expanding, and people are trying to farm on what used to be rhino/elephant habitat. The Africans consider the large wildlife pests who damage their crops (or, in the case of lions, actively dangerous)

I think the prohibitions on trading in ivory, horns, etc do more harm than good. If the Africans were able to profit from the trade, then they could make money setting up sanctuaries where the critters could live, they could pay for guards to protect them from poachers, and then every year or two people could go in, tranquilize the beast, remove his horn/ivory, and then let him live to grow another set.

Hunting is a big business in certain parts of Africa, where people pay thousands of dollars for hunting permits. The money pays for upkeep of the wildlife preserve.

I see your logic, Enthetan, but I disagree.

Severe animal cruelty is rampant in many 3rd world countries. It's done without a second thought. I saw some horrible things in Malaysia and Phuket and all of it was legal. The standard is different, the awareness, respect and desire to maintain wildlife was nearly non-existent among the native peoples. Things done to animals for the sake of tourist dollars... believe me, you don't want to know. I can't forget the things I saw with my own eyes. The suffering of those animals made me cry.

Hunters know they can ranch, they just don't. It isn't a new idea, it's just not what they do. Some people seem to have an addiction to the power and thrill of killing an animal. To profit by something they enjoy so much anyway is just a bonus. And it's faster, easier money than ranching. That was the attitude in Malaysia with some of the locals - it wasn't lack of opportunity to ranch. Land was plentiful. Ambition beyond immediate gratification was not.

Elephants, btw, are quite intelligent and normally friendly when not threatened. I have a good friend who emigrated to Australia from South Africa who showed me pictures of elephants waiting for cars to pass and then leading their group across. He had one wild elephant once block his front door and after a few hours, finally decided to lead it away and did.

Your idea may work in theory, but hunters are hunters, they do it with or without any excuse, but providing motivation and incentive just fuels the fire. Have you ever tried to convince one to do anything else? I have. Many times. Always failed.

I already wrote about when Roxann Richards was 'taken' and put on the Isolation R/D., and how Izzy Chait's home in Sta Monica was being used as a "safe house" before they took her to Marshall Goldblatt's home in Malibu.
It would be interesting to see how much money the Chait family has 'donated' to cos.

Well, if he WAS a Scientologist he certainly won't be now. That's an instant Declare right there. Public disavowal of Scientology is a Suppressive Act.

At least he'll be disconnected from his sleezebag father - who created the culture of crime at the gallery and who - IMHO - set his own kid up to take the fall.

From Reuter's

Joseph Chait, 38, a senior auction administrator for his family's business, I.M. Chait Gallery/Auctioneers, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Paul Oetken in Manhattan after pleading guilty in March to conspiring to smuggle wildlife products.

His attorney, Judith Germano, had asked the judge for a sentence of community service. She said that Chait risked being cut off from his family, which raised him in the Church of Scientology, by cooperating with prosecutors.

"My actions were wrong and I regret them every single day," Chait said before being sentenced.

He also said that in a "weird way," he was grateful for the criminal case because it "has allowed me to break the chains of my upbringing."
