Scn for the millions, 1969

Independently published in 1969, as part of the "For the Millions" series, was Walter Braddeson's
'Scientology for the Millions'

I still have the autographed copy given to me by Ben Gibson. Ben was one of the few Scientologists of African ancestry at the time. He had plans of opening an Org in Harlem, although I don't know if anything ever came of it.

I've never heard of "Scientology for the Millions." I guess that's supposed to be a Greek theta on the cover, but it sure looks like a zero. (I guess when I was a scngst I'd have seen a deeper truth there: a thetan is supposedly a "nothing" which is actually infinite, blah blah blah.)

The title itself could be an allusion to the prices.

There actually is an org in Harlem now, so I hear.

At the time there was a "for the millions" series of paperback books on an assortment of topics.

Probably inspired by the notion of educating the masses who, a few decades earlier, had no books in their homes - except perhaps a Bible.

There was a time, during the 1950s and into the sixties, when supermarkets sold inexpensive encyclopedias. As I recall, one volume a month or so.

Over time, a family could amass a complete encyclopedia at low cost.

Looks like Walter Braddeson ran the idea of doing a "Scientology for Millions" book past for the "For the millions" people and they went for it.

Wow that's a trip down memory lane. I remember we had one, either my mom or my gramps. My gramps wasn't a fan, was dimsissive of the whole "for the millions" series. Now that I think of it, he probably saw this book as disparaging to scientology.

This series had stuff on all sorts of wacky nonsense. Phrenology:

I'm guessing the "For the Millions" was the equivalent of the "Dummies" books today.
Yes, that's what I thought at first, but on second thought, the 'Dummies' books dealt with real subjects, and from what I've seen so far (phrenology, UFO's and scientology) this 'For the Millions' series specialises in garbage.

Don't forget ESP

UFOs, ESP, Phrenology... Hubbard sure found himself in worthy company.

Trip down memory lane when I saw Veda's pic of the 22 volume set of the world books. I frequently referred to those as a kid for fun and knowledge.

According to http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~dst/Library/hunt-booklist.html it's "Chock full of obsequious lies and distortions about Scientology and its conman founder Hubbard. The extended comparison to Eastern religions is particularly sickening, while the braggadocio over the fabulous "technology" is second only to _Dianetics_. The entire _For the Millions_ series would make anyone with half a skeptical brain itch and crawl with fallacies and pseudoscience"
Yet an FBI file - http://www.xenu.net/archive/FBI/fbi-242.html - mentions that the book "discusses article on Scientology described it as "a growing cult that reaches dangerously into the mind."

The article on scn that described it as "a growing cult that reaches dangerously into the mind" is this 1968 Life Magazine article by Alan Levy. Levy went undercover and got audited up to Grade IV to see what scn was really like. An interesting read.

so did I when a kid. My parents bought a bunch and I would open a read some of them.

Kind of reminds of Hubbard's Green volumes (organization), red volumes (technology) and blue volumes (research and discovery).
I did the same with Hubbard's shit since I bought them all.

I forget now what exactly the color code meant, but I think the color blue meant knowledge, I totally forget what the color's green and yellow meant, those are dianetics, I think it's in the Art Series book what the colors are supposed to mean.

But, in the end, it doesn't matter, as there is no actual bridge to total freedom, so the colors are a mute point.
