:aliengreeting:“A Stranger in a Strange Land"

On one particular evening, as I plied Liza with the best side of me that I could conjure into existence, she presented me with a copy of “A Stranger in a Strange Land“, Robert Heinlein’s classing Hugo Award winning science fiction novel.

It may interest you to know, John, that there are several interesting "coincidences" marking this & later works of Heinlein with the subject of scientology. One such: in one of Heinlein's late novels he equates the character of "Jubal T. Harshaw" with another character of his named "Lafe R. Hubert".

Additionally, Heinlein admitted to having been audited by Hubbard and the time in which he was writing "Stranger ..." is one that has been proposed as the period in which Heinlein received this auditing. This latter is uncertain, however certain stylistic clues in the novel & its known history of writing suggest the author altered his original intention significantly over the lengthy period in which the novel was written.

ESMB is a Community with many people having a primary or secondary residence here. This thread is one of its larger, permanent Neighborhoods.

The Community has a basic structure, frame work and culture.

The Neighborhoods, within the structure and frame work, develop there own creations, variations and cohort groups within the Culture and, within the Community overall cohort groups.

Culture can be “framed” but not dictated within an open society. Sub-culture cohorts groups are “organic” and “fractal”.

Lakey didn’t start this thread to have “power stats” and “be the biggest and best”.

Lakey started this thread to open his heart and his mind to the Community, to communicate, to learn, to participate and continue his quest to find an ideological “home”.

A “cluster” of friends formed and began “hanging out” together...a "commune" evolved. Carmelo, the developer, saw the “10,000 foot oblique shot”…that this commune was becoming a neighborhood, and like all good developers, realized that a “cool” permanent Neighborhood could be established with and for Lakey and the cluster.

Like all great neighborhoods, things have just kinda evolved and although there is a framework it is flexible, accommodates change and is evolving…organically, fractaly.

We are all part of the Community and have activities and friends all over “Town”. Lots of folks visit here and are always welcome. Many visit here lurking “anonymously”, and they are very welcome, indeed, as they are guests, enjoying this little Neighborhood within the Community…I was once one of them and I appreciated who was here and what was being done here.

Many of us here helped build the monster and feed the beast. I did more than my share—a fact that I am not proud of but, not hang-dog ashamed of, either. My contributions here will hopefully help others with their “dismantling” process. I helped build and operate the monster and personally “fed” the beast.:coolwink:

I think Lakey deserves to be openly and unabashedly proud of this neighborhood…our neighborhood, my neighborhood…that bears the name he gave to it, “The old days – Aboard the Apollo – 1973”.

Face:)

Face, this sis a beautiful insight.
Lakey, you're going to have to get yourself a cardigan.

Ideally, I think a thread should be about its title, and all the pertinent commentary over the years should end up on that thread, and all the irrelevant garbage should drop off and disappear after a while. Of course, that is unreal, but it would be nice if it happened. Each time I have something new to say about the Mark VIII Phuctum meter, for instance, I try and add it to the existing Phuctum thread. That gets complicated by the fact that there isn't one, with my prior lengthy comments and photos and specs etc. spread out over several threads, so I just pick one of them. I figure starting yet another thread on the same subject would be compounding the problem.

I don't think at all in terms of the #1 thread and compare stats like you do. I don't have a problem with you claiming the #1 title. I haven't seen the FCDC thread for months and had forgotten about it. I must have put it on ignore as dev-t way back then!

If I was feeling unbelievably charitable, I would spend ten hours a week distilling the gems of ESMB into a huge series of E-books, probably in PDF format, maybe 100 of them, each one devoted to one main topic. One single post could be in more than one thread, but definitely in moderation. I vaguely had an idea like this a couple of years back when I had completed Bea's story and Dart's stuff. Those probably took 20-30 hours each, as I tidied them up a lot and put them into a neat format and so forth (free download of each at www.paulsrabbit.com). I spent about 10 hours on Mo's story but it required a huge amount of tricky editing to get into what I considered to be an acceptable format and I got maybe 25% of the way through it and then dropped it as too slow and hard to do. If someone paid me to do it I would, but. . . . :)

Just gathering all the individual posts from one poster (i.e., from mainly one but possibly more threads and deleting ALL commentary from others), copying/pasting them in the order they were written, then literally hitting the "create PDF" button (in OpenOffice), and doing absolutely nothing else (no typo correction or placing in logical order or indexing or adding headings and sub-headings or adding footnotes etc. etc. whatsoever) would be about 5% of the work involved in making a "proper" product. I figure anyone could do that as there is no real skill involved beyond being able to copy/paste. As soon as you get into deciding what goes in and what goes out, and all the other stuff involved in editing and designing and proofing it starts getting tricky.

It would actually be a masterful editing job to take, say, 100 topics of interest to the editor (let's be real here!), distill out the most important posts on each topic (maybe 10-100 posts per topic) from all concerned, and place them in a coherent fashion in 100 ebooks or as "ESMB highlights compilations" as a read-only (editor can still add/delete posts) subset of the main board. It would actually be pretty tough to do that. Many here would have the ability to do it, but it's a lot of work, and would have to be a labour of love as no-one is going to pay for it. I don't plan to do it in the foreseeable future, for example, so don't get your hopes up.

Paul
I think this is a terrific idea. For myself, I know I've printed, forwarded, and sent others to your Dart chronicles. The feedback has been highly favorable.

As for anything on ESMB by me, you certainly have carte blanche to do anything you want with anything I've penned or will pen.

Do you have *any* references for this? I'm pretty familiar with Heinlein's work and I don't recognize 'Lafe R. Hubert' at all. Admittedly, I'm not as familiar with his *very* late work. Robert Heinlein did have a short cast of characters over almost all his work, and Jubal Harshaw/Lazarus Long etc. do often serve as thinly veiled Heinlein characters, especially when it comes to fairly irritating pontification. There's at least one such character in any of his books. Including many of his female characters, although people tend to equate them with Virginia Heinlein.

Since 'Stranger' was first published in 1961 and Heinlein had known Hubbard for more than a decade, I wouldn't be surprised if *some* elements of the story, including the deliberate fake 'religion' might have been inspired by 'Ron'.

And, I don't doubt in the least that Ron borrowed freely from Heinlein for aspects of his game, including his decision to create the Sea Org.

But, it's inconceivable to me that the same Robert Heinlein who wrote 'Revolt in 2100' and many other works dedicated to *freedom* would see the Cult that Ron Built as anything but a horror, although, it wouldn't be surprising if he was ignorant enough to see it as harmless.

A special note; Heinlein's 'Church of All Worlds' was based on a fictional 'tech' that actually *worked*. Without that, the story would have been pointless.

Another possible SF reference though; Keith Laumer's 'The Time Bender' from 1966 has as its central character Lafayette O'Leary, who is a putz who uses the wonders of self-hypnosis learned from a book to discover an hitherto unknown reality. I wouldn't be surprised at all if it was a reference to Ron.

Another excellent novel with a Scn theme; Norman Spinrad's 'The Mind Game' based on a world conquering secret cult called 'Transformationalism' that is only a thinly veiled version of Scientology. Very good book.

The references are from the Lazarus Long time line syllabus. As I told you before I believe this specific reference occurs in "Cat Who Walked Through Walls", but I can't swear to it. It's definitely in the late books where he is hop-scotching through the multi-verse encountering characters from earlier books wheresoever he goes. Hubert evidently first occurs as a character name & pseudonym of Lazarus Long in "Time Enough For Love". Either you didn't know your scientology when you read them or you went passed an m/u.

Since you are such a sci-fi fan, Z, why don't you GO LOOK IT UP this time instead of questioning it each time the reference occurs. I'm not or I'd do it for you. And good luck untangling the references. :)

thank you. I have read the words so many times on ESMB, but have never heard them in real life. I hadn't any idea what they meant.

I think this is probably a term which one is familiar with if one has worked on staff or around staff. It's used pretty often in orgs.

More than likely this is the Heinlein character being discussed...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lazarus_Long

Lazarus' own restless nature, his penchant for shady dealings and "normal" humans' envy and hate of long-lifers such as himself have caused him to change identities and planets numerous times over his many years, and the forematter of the book lists some of them, including "Captain Aaron Sheffield", "Mr. Justice Lenox", "Proscribed Prisoner No. 83M2742", "Dr. Lafayette 'Lafe' Hubert", and "His Serenity Seraphim the Younger, Supreme High Priest of the One God in All His Aspects and Arbiter Below and Above".

That's certainly odd. :)

But, Lazarus Long first appeared in Heinlein's 'Methuselah's Children', first published in 1941. So, the character wouldn't have been based on Hubbard, but, the use of the 'alias' sure does look like a reference to him.

And God knows the Lazarus Long in Methuselah's Children was from a far healthier Heinlein than his return in 'Time Enough for Love'.

But thanks Mark, that really is creepy.

Laz had a lot of aliases and in the later books Heinlein started fitting character references in like popcorn at a ball game. In the one I mentioned there is even a passable description of scientology given by Jubal Harshaw as some sort of practice he was involved in. Details are fuzzy in the memory but the focus was on pantheistic solipsism.

I always thought the later books were Heinlein's private little joke to boost sales of his earlier titles. They character references were so thick and tied into the plotlines that you needed to know the earlier material in order to have a clue as to what the hell he was talking about. A sci-fi loving friend gave me "Number of the Beast" to read on a dare. I had to do a survey of major sci-fi writers of the prior hundred years including ALL of Heinlein's major works & stories in order to make it through. Fortunately I new most of the older stuff already as well as the Asimov. Also, I'm a bit of an obsessive book-a-holic, even the stuff that I'm not into so it wasn't exactly torture. :coolwink:

And I did learn about E.E. "Doc" Smith.

Sutter Creek Ragtime Festival

According to Professor Harold Hill, libertine men and scarlet women are attracted to Ragtime, a shameless music that will grab your son, your daughter in the arms of a jungle animal instinct massteria.

On August 13, 14, and 15 (Fri, Sat , Sun), the annual Sutter Creek ragtime Festival takes place. Sutter Creek is in the California Gold Country. There are always a slew of musicians playing at venues all over the town. They have youngsters (talented youngsters, that is) and oldsters and many in between.

http://www.suttercreekragtime.com/

The 16 year old boy that played ragtime at Dave and Aida's post Pasadena Freezone Convention, I first saw (and heard) in Sutter Creek. One of the guys, who graces Disneyland's Main St. Carnation Gardens comes every year. he is terrific. Janet Klein, whose work I've posted here usually comes. For three days, you can tap your feet, and really enjoy yourself.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHtZC1WZvas&feature=related

My wife and I have been going for nearly a decade. There are cute little B & Bs. there are hotels and motels. The town is old (like 150 years old) and ever so charming. The music is ragtime.

The Years after this introduction to the pure magic of real communication skills, a good fiend of mine related a story that illustrated what it was like to bask in the presence of someone who really knows how to listen and acknowledge.

:arose:He said that he was at a party of super stars and he was the only name at the party that you would not recognize. He related that he had the joy of meeting and talking with a number of these Hollywood legends and then he was introduced to Phyllis Diller. After speaking with her he continued to roam the party a bit absent minded, for he was amazed to discover that among this sea of phenomenally beautiful and glamorous woman, he was consumed with the feeling that Phyllis Diller was the most beautiful woman there. This feeling dumbfounded him, for he simultaneously was assaulted with the realization that physically Phyllis was anything but the most beautiful woman at the party. However, despite the ongoing assault of his senses and brain that continue to assert that Phyllis’s physical beauty did not exist, he continued to feel that she was the most beautiful woman at the party, and felt compelled to tell her.

So he went back up to her to inform her of his perplexing feeling that she was the most beautiful person there. He said that she was just as gracious and wonderful as she had been at their first meeting. She smiled and thanked him for his consideration of her beauty, and she then informed him that when she was with someone, she did everything in her power to treat them as if they were the only person in the universe, while she also worked to genuinely feel that everything they had to say was of infinite value. It reminded me of the Ron’s Manners Bulletin where he stated that the first and most vital characteristic of good manners was the ability to genuinely value the person in front of you and to value everything they had to say.

:winner:Following that Phyllis Diller story, I created a Phyllis Diller Award for the staff and clients of my Seminar Magic company. It was a reward designed to be an acknowledgment of their demonstrated ability and willingness to treat everyone they met as if they were the personification of everything valuable in the universe. As a result of sharing my newly created award with Phyllis Diller, we became good friends.

For a while, I dated someone very much like Phyllis in that sense. I got very little time with him, but that time, he was fully present. It's very alluring.

I've also worked with someone who was almost as good at that skill.

Spiritless Humans

For a long time I have been objecting to the dianetic principle of existence: Survive! I object because it is not the be-all, end-all stable datum for me and, apparently, many of my pc/clients. Survive! is a fine principle for a plant or animal body or organization. I assert that this kind of survival just motivates me only so far then it fails. At a very young age I looked at others working their butts off at a job they did not like, to buy a car, to get to the work they hated. Something about that just rubs me the wrong way.

There is another motivating force that is something else, not grounded in materialism. I have no word to describe it, perhaps, because no word can describe something so grounded in spirit. But it is easy for a spiritual being to discern. It comes to us as fantastic and even subtle moments of enlightenment. It is with us when we are on a right path, as Joseph Campbell would say, following one's bliss.

What is the other motivating force? It is spirit itself. It appears anywhere and everywhere. In sessions it has come to me as that sense that one's spiritual toilet has been flushed of ego, survival concerns, ill-will, and materialism. That flush brings about a genuine, persistent floating needle, an actual new realization about life, not just a reordering of priorities and perceptions (like a pretended "cog" to call off the process), and unmistakable good indicators, the type that attracts hap and spiritual teammates on similar paths.

From <http://montalk.net/matrix/157/spiritless-humans>:

Consequences of Lacking a Spirit

With the preceding in mind [text of article], consider what happens when someone has body, ego, and soul, but lacks spirit. First and foremost, their entire makeup would be the result of material influences like genetics and environment. The seat of their apparent intelligence would be the ego. And without the counterweight of spirit, their ego would reign king. Thus, in accordance with the function of ego, such people would be completely dedicated to material and social survival.

[Completely dedicated to "Survival!," as implied in DMSMH]

Notice that people with spirit who are awake to their spiritual impulses often make willful choices that serve no financial, social, or egotistic gains, that go against the expectations of Darwinian evolutionary principles, and that serve only spiritual ends. [Did hubbard or his church ever make a choice that served no financial, social, or egotistical gain? Probably not.] Such impulses are absent in spiritless people, thus they are truly optimized for survival in the physical world. Without conscience, empathy, or inner battle between ego and spirit holding them back, they can more quickly and easily succeed in their worldly environments regardless of the cost to others. [Here is a partial description of classic narcissism, very much hubbard.]

I found the hubbard books interesting enough even when I had my doubts. This is what got me started in my dianetic/scientology adventure -- reading, searching. The books, however, were not enough to hold me there. It was not enough to draw me into a church. I did not like churches.

Once I set foot in the door, the courses were not enough to captivate me. I had other plans for my life. I connected to the people, and not any people, but to specific ones. To this day, we are connected, by something intangible. Though we may not correspond in the physical world, we are nevertheless in a timeless correspondence of sorts.

What is that intangible yet very real something? It is spirit.

Yes, this is very good, Ted.

From my own personal experience, I would say that the "intangible" referred to above (though I have found it to be quite a tangible thing) is our personal perception and experience of a spiritual most wanted want. For it is this "want," the reach for at the highest mood level, that is the genesis of our spiritual energy and motion.

Not just the having of such, or even the knowing that one has such; but the actual experience of one's moving to its fulfillment.

And what would this spiritual most wanted want be? Well we are each an individual, and so we each have our particular most wanted want . . . but still, what is this individual spiritual most wanted want thing? Of what is its "stuff"?

I have found it to be a spiritual virtue, a spiritual quality and attribute . . . we all have them, many of them. The question is, however, which one of yours do you find to be most valuable to you? We each have our own particular most wanted virtue/quality to be exchanged and experienced.

Thus, the question is, what is your most wanted want to exchange, give and receive and experience with another/other spiritual Beings?

It is when we are each on that purpose and endeavor that I have found Beings are spiritually most alive, most loving, in harmony, at peace, truthful, complete within themselves and "whole" in their knowing of life . . . and I use that word "life" in both the senses of meaning: the game of a living/existing, and the that which is the source of the "sparkle" that animates all life forms and our Being.

And at the essence, it is a spiritual quality, emanation and expression alone. There is no other source of it.

Ka-ching!

I am sometimes amazed when I stop to look and see beings, including myself, separated from their actual experience. Beings have marvelous filter sets, attitude, mental, analytical, perceptual, emotional, fixed ideas, and so on, that are used to separate themselves from participating in actual experience.

Good processing allows a being to approximate its actual experience even if that's just a cleanup job after the fact. Ideally, actual experience would be processed as life goes by, in real time.

There is a scale in 0-8 called Reality Spotting By E-meter. Note, participate and experience are at the top of the scale. The associated meter phenomena is F/N. It is one of my favorite scales.

P.S. If Hubbard was all wrong it would make my job of hanging him at every opportunity much easier. But he wasn't all wrong.

Phyllis Diller's last performance:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNKoj84WG7E

Like many performers, she was doing what she liked / loved, and consequently, stayed on top long past "old age," "retirement age"

One of the secrets to life is to be and do what you love.

Living for survival would be death for me.

As i've said before, "love" is my principal raison d'état. My wife flows with "order" as in well organized and functioning well. Our daughter groves on "knowledge"

You have to know and fully understand the tune you are playing.

Ted,

Consistently Rog, Carmelo, Lakey and often all y’all put up links and posts that, for me personally, are not only some of the best things I’ve read or seen but are also what I need to be readin' or seein' at that time.

However, Ted, you do the above presciently precise. :coolwink: Your link and post re: Spirit elegantly articulates “stuff” and “feelings” that have been lingering around me for over 20 years…stuff that I haven’t been able, nor particularly wanted, to articulate. I’ve discussed some of this “stuff” with my metaphysic/psychotherapist friend. Interestingly, he called me yesterday and said he’s been reading a book that has some good stuff along this line of inquiry that he’s gonna give me next week when we get together. I had just finished reading the full article of your Link.

I’m in a real conundrum here.

I jumped ahead in my “Readers Digest” treatments to respond with adequate context to some excellent stuff Fisherman and Lakey brought up over on the “LRH Thumbnail Sketch” thread. I intend to go back in the future and fill in the rest.

A while back, during a conversation with Carmelo, I touched on the fact that during all the time I was around El Ron that, although I felt “Space” around Hisself, I never perceived any “Juice”…no “Spark”…something was missing…I’m not talking about a nothingness, I mean “something” wasn’t there; “something” that, as far as I’m concerned, shoulda been there. I also touched on a few other thoughts re: Hisself which I intended to make the final Installment of my treatments…your post and Link are very much in concert with those thoughts.

So, now WTF do I do? Do I jump ahead yet again…which will take several installments to “frame”…and, as I am so, so slow will take until next week probably to complete? Do I just “throw my comments” up on the wall now, as the “stewpot is currently on the burner”? Do I finish my “What I bought into and Why?” and then go back to finishing things in sequence? :confused2:

I’m open for suggestions from those that have interest.

Anyway, thanks again, Ted…thanks a whole bunch. As we use to say in the ‘60’s, “You’re blowing my mind, man!”:D

I continue to be amazed at my good fortune to have wandered into all y'all’s neighborhood.:happydance:

Face:)

write a note for yourself on areas you want to expand and expound on. Go with the flow of the conversation. When you get time, put out another chapter.

Without sounding like a one trick pony. but nevertheless, about 800 people a day read this thread. The LRH sketch has had a total of about 2,000 in the weeks it has been up. I'll let you follow your own logic on this.

Hey, what a compliment! Where I came from, before scientology, that was a compliment of the highest order.

I haven't written anything here that I haven't written elsewhere as late as 4 years ago. The articulation today might be different, but not by much. Different audience requires a different presentation.

The links, however, are new. It is in the acquisition of new data, new viewpoints, and real, live communication that I find my perspectives changing and expanding. It's all good.

Back on the thread when the subject of the '50s came up I though I would do a "My Story" to kinda of clarify how a pretty normal kid could get caught up in a flying saucer cult. But the thread moves along so damn fast that I just haven't gotten to it. What I am doing instead is trying to stay relevant. That's all. Just trying to stay relevant to the topics at hand.

Maybe someday I will get around to a "My Story" and a "My Philosophy." I can see that I am going to have to write it all up then post a little chunk at a time. I will probably post on the Apollo thread first as this is where the readership congregates, then I will move it to a personal thread. This maneuver is not unusual in the publishing industry. Why not here, too.
