It scares me when you talk like a staff member IM! I know you don't wanna sound like one - right?

But - thank you for passing info/link along Ms. Mary! It IS very interesting to see the demise of Narco and separately from Scn in general. I mean just the basic differences in the 2 things make for entertainment way far apart from each other - but even though very connected - know whatta mean?

Yes, I do!
Narconon is where the steady easy money comes in for the church. This is why lawsuits are so effective against their facilities and upper management. The lawsuits will suck them dry of their monies and close their doors for all the harm they have done to people.

(Part 2) The Rise and Fall of the Narconon Internet Marketing Empire

Narconon is a unique entity in terms of internet marketing because they focused so much energy on the internet in the early days and were very successful at it. They really beat most other rehab facilities to the punch. A primary reason for this is because the local marketing […] Read on for more...

If you missed the earlier segments of this series, see Part 1 or Part 2.

"In 2003, Google changed it’s search algorithm with an update code-named “Florida”. Essentially, it would no longer consider “keyword stuffing” to be an accurate determination of rank. In many cases, websites simply sank in ranking. In other cases, Google sent out letters notifying website owners that they were completely de-listed and removed from any possibility of Google ranking. Ironically, many Narconon based websites were de-ranked, delisted, or in Scientology terms “disconnected from as being unethical” by Google itself.

Many FSMs that were doing exceptionally well shut down almost overnight. Some tried to “sell off” their delisted websites to unsuspecting graduates or staff members who thought they might be at least as successful if they bought them. Average cost was $10,000 for these sites. Only after purchasing them did people quickly realize they were now worthless due to the Google updates.

I'm curious if this was written as a research or thesis paper? The tone of it suggests its original intended audience is not the typical blog/online reader.

(Also, this is a compliment, it is far more factual and less dramatic in tone, than may similar writings on the topic. This makes the piece of far more use to real investigative journalists and other professionals.)

Hi BunnySkull,

Good question!

As far as I know, it was written to be read by those interested in or familiar with Google and Internet Marketing and, in particular, for those who are interested in how Narconon got all over the web as it did, only to later fall in visibility.

Many people are stymied by how Narconon and their fake referral web sites managed to always pop up when ever they searched for help for a loved one for a substance abuse problem. It was as if there were no competitors. Google now regularly changes the formulas on how search engines work so companies like Narconon cannot 'keep cutting ahead of the line'.

This series explains how Narconon facilities manipulated things and how it backfired. How they set up thousands of websites with and without the Narconon name to lure people into calling their toll free numbers. Narconon is known industry wide for their marketing tricks.

I hope this helps. Reading the rest of the series as it comes out over the week will probably give a better explanation than I can :)

Mary
ps: I will relay the compliment! Thanks

Absolutely fucking fascinating.

Brilliant.

A must read.

:wow:

Not only amazing for its information about how Narconon managed to grow by manipulating Internet search results, but just a great education about Google search and how it's evolved.

Thanks so much, Mary.

Traditional Treatment Facility Response to Current Internet Marketing Struggles

Narconon isn’t alone in the increased expense of marketing on the internet. Traditional treatment facilities have been affected as well. Many facilities find they cannot compete financially in the internet marketing arena. For a lower cost program, it is impossible to spend $6000 on a client when their program only costs $10,000 to attend. However, what is unique about Narconon is their terrible reputation. Narconon is losing much more business than a traditional treatment center due to all the negative reviews that are out there.

So what are traditional facilities doing?[...]
