Anonymous, WhyWeProtest, and Wikileaks

One of the moderators on WWP has written an excellent post that clearly defines the difference between Anonymous, Chanology & WWP and the relationship to current activities regarding Wikileaks.

Although the Wikileaks situation has bought about this clarification, the information in the post holds true regardless of Wikileaks and should really be understood by anyone reading WWP or even ESMB.

http://forums.whyweprotest.net/332-wikileaks/please-read-anonymous-whyweprotest-wikileaks-74386/
There has been an unusual amount of traffic and new users in the last few days. This is undoubtedly due to media coverage of "Operation Payback" in support of WikiLeaks.

Whyweprotest.net is the number three Google result for "Anonymous" with the first two being Wikipedia articles. A number of news sources have connected the "Anonymous" that works against the Church of Scientology with the "Anonymous" that is attacking the websites of companies that have worked against WikiLeaks. There was even a link here from a New York Times article in connection with "Operation Payback," so it is only natural that some people end up here in response to what is an ongoing international news story. We welcome new users and wish you the best.

I'm making this post to clarify things to our new users, to passers-by and some established users who seem to be a bit misinformed.

What Anonymous is
Anonymous is simply a group of people who communicate using disposable identities, or not using any identity at all. "Anonymous" can refer to the millions of people who post on various websites without using their real identities, it can refer to any given subset of those people, or it can even refer to a single person.

What Anonymous is not
Anonymous is not a single cohesive group of people. No single person or group of people is representative of "Anonymous" as a whole. Anonymous has no official membership, and has no official guidelines and no officials. There is no controlling entity and no unifying principles. Not everyone who considers himself to be Anonymous is involved with everything "Anonymous" is said to be responsible for, and things that "Anonymous" is said to be responsible for do not represent the opinions or actions of every single person or any given person who considers himself to be a part of Anonymous.

What WhyWeProtest.net is
WhyWeProtest.net (WWP) is primarily the central hub for "Project Chanology." Project Chanology is the name for the anti-Scientology activism movement that includes elements of Anonymous and also includes former Scientology members and other long-time critics. Some of WWP's users consider themselves to be "Anonymous" some do not. WWP is not exclusively limited to Scientology. WWP also hosts discussion and activism on a number of other topics including the recent Iranian elections. There is a general sentiment among most WWP users strongly in favor of free expression and the free exchange of information.

What WhyWeProtest.net is not

WWP is not representative of "Anonymous" as a whole. "Anonymous" as a whole is not necessarily representative of Chanology or WWP. WWP is not the one and only home of Anonymous, it is a home for some people who consider themselves to be part of Anonymous.

WWP is NOT a staging ground for any sort of illegal activity against any party. WWP does not condone or promote any illegal activities. If you as a WWP user spot any promotion of illegal activities, such as denial of service attacks please use the report button to the left of the post so that the moderating staff can act. WWP will comply with any valid orders by law enforcement agencies, however to date we have never received any such orders.

Why WWP has a section for discussing WikiLeaks
A lot of WWP users hold very strong sentiments about the freedom of speech, freedom of expression and freedom of information. WikiLeaks is viewed as a beacon of freedom of information and actions against it are viewed as suppressing free expression of ideas. WikiLeaks has also hosted a number of internal Scientology documents.

This section is to be used for discussion of events surrounding WikiLeaks and Julian Assange, and it can be used to organize legal avenues to disseminate your opinion on the subject.

This section is NOT to be used to promote or organize any illegal activities. This, however does not mean that you cannot discuss when other people are using illegal activities.

Now please feel free to call me a leader-fag and whatnot now, but I think this needed to be clarified

Thanks,
Rufus

Perhaps, some Anons bumping into WWP or ESMB should clear up description of what Anonymous really is, in its true and full sense of the word, as given here:
http://encyclopediadramatica.com/Anonymous
Anonymous, in addition to being responsible for 85% of all quotes ever cited, is the source of 91% of all Internet truth and justice and 32.33 (repeating of course), and our daily dosage of Vitamins /b/ and Lulz. Anonymous is void of human restraints, such as pity and mercy. Those who perform reckless actions or oppose Anonymous will be eliminated. Failure is not tolerated. Enemies are to be dealt with swiftly and efficiently. Anonymous must work as one. Anonymous is everyone and noone. You are. I am. Everyone is. Anonymous is humanity when the gloves come off. Anonymous is legion and its deeds are legend. What most people do not see in anonymous is that they do not go up against Scientology because of their ways, nor do anonymous do anything else for a valid reason. Anonymous in itself is a free-joining attention seeking "cult" as it may be referred to. They go up against Scientology so that they attract attention, moar people join, they become more confident and repeat.

Anonymous is the only immortal troll on the internet, which means they will never be banned.

Anonymous is infinity divided by 0.= Syntax error.

Anonymous is not a person, nor is it a group, movement or cause: Anonymous is a collective of people with too much time on their hands, a commune of human thought and useless imagery. A gathering of sheep and fools, assholes and trolls, and normal everyday netizens. An anonymous collective, left to its own devices, quickly builds its own society out of rage and hate. Anonymous can be anyone from well-meaning college kids with highly idiosyncratic senses of humor trying to save people from Scientology, to devious nihilist hackers, to clever nerds, to thirteen year old boys who speak entirely in in-jokes on an endless quest for porn, to 16 year old girls posting pictures of their B-cups because they think they look good, to potential rapists browsing through MySpace to find some 16 year old girls posting pictures of their B-cups because they think they look good. Furries are not included among the ranks of Anonymous due to their supreme faggotry. For this same reason all furfags are destroyed within .666 seconds of facing the power of Anonymous

Some Anons should also understand that "Project Chanology" (http://encyclopediadramatica.com/) is just one of the Projects of Anonymous. While Project Chanology has been the most prominent success of Anonymous, it has never come to mean that Anonymous is only "Anti-Scientology organization of Interntet hackers..." (that's what Co$ spreads and tries everyone believe in their anti-Anon campaign).

"Operation Payback" is but another project of Anonymous that just started gaining momentum due to the recent events.

imho

Vad in your next post I guess is the answer:

Anonymous has no specific agenda, save doing it for the lulz. This is an agenda that those who are not Anonymous fail to find the sense in <snip>

Chanology is the mixture between Anonymous, Ex-Scientologists and critics and that is the secret of its success.

Vad, you added your own special emphasis to a particular section (that you highlighted in green). Why did you add emphasis to this section?
It is not descriptive of the majority of Anon's that most ESMB'er's will come into contact with.

Also you posted what you said is the description of "what Anonymous really is" it its true and full sense of the word as given in Enclopedia Dramatica but that was NOT the full description. You edited it to remove about half of it.

Simply put, it was my humble attempt at clarifying what Emma has quoted in the OP.

It was addressed not to the members of ESMB but rather to those who (due to the ongoing events with Wikileaks and its founder - Aussie, BTW :coolwink:) lurk here considering that here are the same Anons as everywhere, and, thus are the resources for the "Internet War I". (Just in case of suspicions thatI'm against it, I don't mind folks here joining that War).

Perhaps, my message is not understood. Oh, well. I'm used to it. :)

I emphasised that section because it was at the top of the page.

Anonymous in itself is a free-joining attention seeking "cult" as it may be referred to. They go up against Scientology so that they attract attention, moar people join, they become more confident and repeat.
That part of the web page underlines the level and spirit and "goals" of Anonymous involvement into the matters of Scientology and Sea Org.
AFAIK, to quote the whole article into here would become TL;DR thing. Plus, links to other resources from that page would be a short-change type of thing. Thus, link in my post above included (for anyone to read and comprehend).

As I remember, "Anonymous is not your personal army", and that holds true for any Anon trying to involve other Anons into the game he wants to play.

When I said "what Anonymous really is", I said about what Anonymous REALLY IS, and not in the sense you prefer them to perceive ("good guys or gals in Guy Fawkes masks protesting Scn"). REALLY, Anonymous is much bigger than Scn (see the post above about Targets of Anonymous).
Thinking that Anonymous is "the whole world fighting just injustices and abuses of Scn" is just too narrow, too limited.

If you don't like my excerpts, go to Wikipedia and type there "anonymous". Perhaps, it will give your less slanted view about what Anonymous REALLY IS. - But I doubt.

Also, see my sig line. I don't have ambitions of a guru about what things and people 'really are". I quote others and tell about myself and my views ("what it feels like").

P.S. As far as I can understand, majority of Anons don't even have a clue what Scientology is, to even join Chanology.

I find this failed cult called "scientology" to just be a lulz factor. Is a :giggle: looking at it. Therefore, am I anonymous? I know I certainly have no idea who/what I am/am not. And I'm not even seeking to find out! I just sort of am.

Mystic, I think we are on the same page with you.
The only difference is that I don't bother to hide my identity. I'm open. :eyeroll:

P.S. Every friggin' one of us (human being of Planet Earth) is Anonymous once he/she joins the Internet (not *chan necessarilly) unless/until his identity is discovered/uncovered/made known.

VaD, ED is not a great source for coherent, immutable, explanations, and is more satire than anything even though some info is direct and correct, lots of it is not too.

Some of you might think that way:
Anonymous has been after Scientology. Therefore, I'm Anonymous. Therefore I belong to Anonymous. Therefore, Anonymous is my group".

Fucking wrong!

Anonymous has helped you, but Annymous is not *YOUR* group.
And never been so.

ED

When I was still in CoS I boldly went to the Internet to find out something about Anonymous. I found ED, and was tempted to accept its description of Anonymous as accurate. The ED site itself seemed like a hostile, destructive site that used fear to get across its message, and for me that was a plus, since I was looking for evidence that Anonymous itself shared those traits.

I have since left CoS and have come to a very different view of Anonymous, which actually to me does not seem to be joined at the hip with the creators/maintainers of ED. ED seems to be asserting some sort of connection with Anonymous, whereas the WWP article quoted in the OP suggests the opposite. Reading VaD's posts, my initial impression of ED, which I never read anymore, has not changed. In fact my feeling of nervousness as I write this is similar to the feeling I had about CoS tactics when I first started posting here.

But perhaps I'm off base and someone could set me straight.

There are as many flavours of anon as there are people, see pie chart post near the OP.
ED is like much satire, a mixture of fact and fallicy, not exactly a reputable source for research etc. since they don't give a shit about context or accuracy from what I've seen, I don't pay attention to it at all and find it usually irritating, so your not off base imho Ho Tai.
The excellent explaination from "Rufus" at wwp that Emma quoted pretty much has it straight, though there are going to be more than a few who will still not get their heads around the over-all concept.
