If The Simpsons had a storyline about Bart becoming Scientology's biggest contributor - even bigger than Tom Cruise - you'd believe it. Well, it's true.

Nancy Cartwright, the voice of Bart Simpson, last year donated more than $11 million to the Church Of Scientology - twice as much as Tom Cruise.

Cartwright joined the Church of Scientology in 1989. Today, she is one of its prominent, albeit lower profile, stable of stars.

The now infamous footage of Tom Cruise receiving a 'Freedom Medal of Valour' at a Scientology function, cheered on by James Packer, is an example how Scientology rewards generosity.

The platinum meritorious award was bestowed on Tom Cruise after he donated US$2.5 million to Scientology.

He then kicked in another US$2.5 million and was bumped up to a diamond meritorious awardee.

But his US$5 million pales in comparison to Cartwright's generous gift of US$10 million, earning her a Patron Laureate award.

Other celebrity benefactors last year include actress Kirstie Alley, who matched Cruise's US$5 million and his diamond meritorious award.

John Travolta and his wife Kelly Preston both forked over $1 million each for their gold awards, while Elvis's widow Priscilla Presley could spare only $50,000.

"There's no doubt about it that the people that didn't make it in Hollywood - and I mean survived - if they had had Scientology or Dianetics, they would have been here today," Travolta claimed.

The head of the Church of Scientology, David Miscavige, long ago made it his mission to recruit high profile converts. Many have since passed through Scientology's celebrity centre in Hollywood, emerging with a decidedly different worldview.

The money Cruise and Cartwright have kicked in will go towards Scientology's 'global salvage effort'. The aim of it is to 'de-aberrate' planet Earth, including ending psycholocial and psychiatric problems and undesirable behaviour.

While Cruise is outspoken on his faith, Cartwright has been more circumspect.

She has said she joined the church hoping to meet a husband, which she did. They had two children, then sadly divorced two years ago.

However, life has been kind to Cartwright. In 2004, her salary was doubled to $300,000 per episode of The Simpsons, landing her $5.5 million per season.

She has been quoted as saying she found in Scientology practical guidance she had always been looking for. In return, Scientology has found in her millions of dollars.

What isn't clear, is how much billionaire Aussie convert James Packer has pulled out of his pocket.

Recruited in 2001 by Tom Cruise, Packer has since turned his back on his family's media empire to invest in casinos, despite Scientology's distaste for gambling.

The question remains, how big a windfall for Scientology is its number one Australian follower?

Many may scoff at Scientology's belief that human DNA was altered millions of years ago by aliens, yet few can argue their astounding financial success is written in the stars.

Heh. Looks like some Merchant of Chaos is confusing Scientology and Rael.
