April 2009 Scientology shocked the people and the administration of Berlin-Spandau, when they opened a Scientology-bookstore in the old city.
Spandau is a part of Berlin, which is very very far out, at the edge of everything. In 1920 the former city of Spandau were forced to integrated into Berlin by law, but until now the people in this part of Berlin refer themselves mostly as “Spandauer” not as “Berliner”. Its so far out... That was the reason why we didn’t raided this bookshop very often, although we did. (But mostly it was this way: Anons meet. “Let’s raid the shop in Spandau!” “Yeah... but we could also raid the booth at XYZ, were we don’t have to drive 45 minutes for.” “Okay. Let’s do Spandau another time.”)

[Fading memories.... Scifags Joshi cleans the window of the bookstore, Anon protest... April 2009... fading away... ]

That doesn’t meant that the administration and the people of Spandau weren’t active. They did a lot, e.g. special courses in school classes and public information. The “Runder Tisch Spandau für Demokratrie und Toleranz” (Round Table Spandau for Democracy and Tolerance) – which consists of the political parties of Spandau (including the former major of Spandau), the police, members of the local economy, local churches, and members of groups of the local civil society – which usually deals with racism, neo-fascist activities, antisemitism and so on, did two special meetings regarding only the Scientology bookstore and strategies against the cult (one with the information center about cults from the Berlin government, one with Anon Berlin).

And the press coverage was quite big and consistent against the cult. Scientology used the attention to claim that this bookstore was the first step in a new strategy they would ran in Berlin. They even claimed that the shop was a big success and that they were looking for other places to open some more. Even when the windows of the store were damaged more than ones, Sabine Weber – the PR-woman for the Berlin Org – still claimed in late 2009 that there were two Scifags who worked only in the shop 40 hours the week, because it was necessary for all people who rushed into the shop to get Dianetics and Stresstests. But still, nearly ever article about the shop ended with informations were you could get help, if you’ll have problems with Scientology.

So, today I was in Spandau for some reasons. And this is what the place looks like now: closed. Very, very, very closed. No more bookshop in Spandau. End of the game. In view of the fact that this should have been the first shop in a long line of Scientology-shops in Berlin it is even more a reason to celebrate. (Now it is only the Org left.)

At least they took their sign with them, not leaving it to fade and peel and advertise their failure.

Thanks for posting this. It is very good news. A sign of the times.
