BFG's book and Depeche Mode...

I got his book yesterday and jumped right into it. It's been great. It's filled in many questions and lost time for me. Many of our friends are the same.
It's almost as if I lived his book so far. With all the good and bad memories.

Anyways, I somehow ignored the title of the first chapter. Once I read the second chapter I laughed my ass off. I flipped to all the titles and found that all his chapter titles are Depeche Mode song titles.

I'd forgotten what a huge fan Marc is of Depeche Mode. As I am as well.

I just decided to listen to some music on the web. First song was Strangelove by Depeche Mode. What are the odds?

Many people do not understand the Depeche Mode connection. I have been listening to Depeche Mode since the 1980’s. Depeche Mode music was my only sanctuary. So many of their songs meant a lot to me and sum up the way I felt in a single song.

I think that if you look at some of the words to the songs you will see an uncanny coincidence to things that I was experiencing.

Example. The song “A Pain That I Am Used To” sums up what I was feeling while at the Int Base and how I felt about David Miscavige. While it is a metaphor – anyone who has read the book can see that this song is dead on! Listen to the song and read the words and I think you will agree.

A Pain That I Am Used To

Written by Martin L Gore

I'm not sure what I'm looking for anymore
I just know that I'm harder to console
I don't see who I'm trying to be instead of me
But the key is a question of control

Can you say what you're trying to play anyway
I just pay while you're breaking all the rules
All the signs that I find have been underlined
Devils thrive on the drive that is fueled

All this running around, well it's getting me down
Just give me a pain that I'm used to
I don't need to believe all the dreams you conceive
You just need to achieve something that rings true

There's a hole in your soul like an animal
With no conscience, repentance unknown
Close your eyes, pay the price for your paradise
Devils feed on the seeds that are sown

I can't conceal what I feel, what I know is real
No mistaking the faking, I care
With a prayer in the air I will leave it there
On a note full of hope not despair

All this running around, well it's getting me down
Just give me a pain that I'm used to
I don't need to believe all the dreams you conceive
You just need to achieve something that rings true

All this running around, well it's getting me down
Just give me a pain that I'm used to
I don't need to believe all the dreams you conceive
You just need to achieve something that rings true

Until next time…

I know the feeling very well. I had to find some outlet to feel something other than fear and anger. DM was the largest factor (many of their songs helped me) for me because most if not all their songs are pretty deep in my opinion. Some other music helped as well.
For me it was about other emotions and just getting away from what I was going through. Even if it was just temporary.

Wow, never heard that song, BFG. And you are right, it IS great in terms of lyrics and sounds like it described what you were experiencing!

I liked Depeche back in the 80's (and Tears for Fears and U2, etc). But I'd stopped listening to them, don't know why. Think I'll go check out more of their songs now (and download Pain That I'm Used To in my IPOD).

Wouldn't this be a great song to blare out of speakers at Protests at Gold? :coolwink:

Btw: When is Claire gonna write her book? :whistling:

Just shows (perhaps) how quantumly entangled we are on this little planet...channeling the pain through art and aesthetics. Does art mirror life, or life mirror art?

For anyone interested: The lyrics to 'The Sun and The Rainfall':

Someone will call
Something will fall
And smash on the floor
Without reading the text
Know what comes next
Seen it before
And it's painful

Things must change
We must rearrange them
Or we'll have to estrange them
All that I'm saying
The game's not worth playing
Over and over again

You're the one I like best
You retain my interest
You're the only one
If it wasn't for you
Don't know what I'd do
Unpredictable like the sun
And the rainfall

Things must change
We must rearrange them
Or we'll have to estrange them
All that I'm saying
The game's not worth playing
Over and over again

Not meaning to de-rail from Depeche but..I think this some of this song's lyrics seem appropriate, too...

Ooh, baby don't you know I suffer?
Oh, baby can you hear me moan?
You caught me under false pretenses
How long before you let me go?

Ooh, you set my soul alight
Ooh, you set my soul alight

Glaciers melting in the dead of night
And the superstars sucked into the supermassive
(Ooh, you set my soul alight)
Glaciers melting in the dead of night
And the superstars sucked into the supermassive
(Ooh, you set my soul)

I thought I was a fool for no one
But ooh, baby I'm a fool for you
You're the queen of the superficial
And how long before you tell the truth?

Ooh, you set my soul alight
Ooh, you set my soul alight

Glaciers melting in the dead of night
And the superstars sucked into the supermassive
(Ooh, you set my soul alight)
Glaciers melting in the dead of night
And the superstars sucked into the supermassive
(Ooh, you set my soul)

Supermassive black hole
Supermassive black hole
Supermassive black hole
Supermassive black hole

Glaciers melting in the dead of night
And the superstars sucked into the supermassive
Glaciers melting in the dead of night
And the superstars sucked into the supermassive

Glaciers melting in the dead of night
And the superstars sucked into the supermassive
(Ooh, you set my soul alight)
Glaciers melting in the dead of night
And the superstars sucked into the supermassive
(Ooh, you set my soul)

Supermassive black hole
Supermassive black hole
Supermassive black hole
Supermassive black hole
