Following more than five years of documenting the fraud and human rights abuses inside Narconon's drug rehab network, another book has been published debunking the pseudoscience rehab centers

...

'DANTE'S EIGHTH CIRCLE: Why Scientology's Narconon Must Be Stopped" details the Scientology teachings inside Narconon. The "students" (patients) at Narconon have no idea they are gradually being indoctrinated into the cult of Scientology. Many students have psychotic breaks, are kicked out of the program, and become suicidal. Some suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and others die from overdoses.

A "Sneak Peek Inside" Dante's Eighth Circle is available at 'Smart People Today' website:

With love and respect, I am very grateful to all who contributed to this book. I am also indebted to all those who generously gave me their support, encouragement and inspiration over the past five years.

I hope I have been able to give some insight into what I and others endured. I am honored to have crossed paths with many of the students at Narconon and to this day, think of them often with warm thoughts and love. If it wasn’t for our close connections, I may not have survived to see this book come to fruition. I believe that we will never give up or say that we can’t do something, or that something seems impossible. No matter how discouraging each step appears, we are only limited by what we allow ourselves to be.

No matter what we’ve been through, we’re still here. Even though the past may have hurt, betrayed, and abused, we are never defeated unless we give up. I hope we all will continue to press on with success and victory, transforming ourselves from victim to survivor. Many thanks to all who never gave up on me and stood by me. It is my sincere belief and hope that there will be justice for all those who suffered. Bless you all. – David E. Love

My editor and graphics designer were quite concerned about inserting images, but the few we decided to insert
turned out great.

I like the subtitle:

"Why Scientology's Narconon Must Be Stopped"

No one is going to die wondering what your position is or what the book is about.

Also, nice to see a direct unambiguous connection between Narconon and Scientology.

And with the hell they both represent. Nice title David.

Thank you.

Dante’s 14th century poem, The Devine Comedy, begins with a journey through “The Inferno,” or the nine circles of Hell, with the Eighth Circle representing FRAUD. Inside Scientology’s Narconon were insidious abuses that were the embodiment of such fraud, and even treachery, as to equal Dante’s Eighth Circle. This book will touch on the “Fourth Circle – Greed” and the “Ninth Circle Treachery” – the latter being betrayal of special relationships and disconnection/shunning.

It's fitting you reference that great epic.. Because the bad deeds committed by these organisations for the benefit of David Miscavige are truly .. Epic .. In their depth of depravity, masked by a showy fake-benevolent veneer.

This book chronicles David Love’s own journey, which culminated in his unwavering commitment to expose the exploitations of a powerful cult, despite the lengths his opponent was willing to go, in order to silence him. Emotionally vulnerable and physically depleted, Love fell onto a realm where fraudulent abuses are heaped upon the weak, quack medicine destroys people’s lives, and Scientology hides behind the scenes pulling strings to maximize its profits.

So how did I fall – hook, line and sinker – for the “drug treatment” scam known as Narconon, operated by the Church of Scientology to bilk its “students” of tens of thousands of dollars and to indoctrinate new members into “The Church”?

As I unravel the answer to this question for myself, I will explain my personal nightmare to you in vivid detail – the hellish incidents of brain-washing and mind control, the lost sense of personal identity and a haunting period of post-traumatic stress. I hope that you might comprehend the pain, the nightmares, and sleepless nights, so you emerge armed with knowledge that can help you resist the pull of Narconon/Scientology, should it enter your life or the lives of anyone dear to you.

As more funds were bled off, veteran staff in the kitchen and elsewhere did not receive their pay checks. Some weeks only a small advance on pay was given in cash. Eventually, valued staff, such as cooks, quit without notice, and students were pressed behind the kitchen counters and grills. So vampirish was this cult, that even I and the other four staff recruits didn’t receive our mere $90 net pay for our week’s work — only a few bucks in cash to tie us over till the next let-down.

DANTE’S EIGHTH CIRCLE: Book Chapter Excerpts

Chapter 1

The Road to Healing: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Please understand one overriding fact that I learned the hard way. Scientology’s Narconon is a Thriving Cult of Greed and Power, dictated by its current leader David Miscavige, who many allege is a narcissistic, psychotic, sociopath. I was battered around psychologically while in the cult and dealing with the resulting PTSD. When I began to speak out against Sci-entology’s Narconon , the attacks that followed, orchestrated by Scientology, were far worse.

As you travel with me on these pages, try to imagine what it would be like if your freedom of speech was taken away . . . Think about not being allowed to show your emotions or pain. I was forced to abandon my freedom, hide the real me and convert to their cult belief system . . . Scientology. Rooms were searched, books were taken away, and I dared not reveal my painful memories. Narconon executives scorned me and commanded I stay in present time.

Chapter 2

Vancouver to Scientology’s Narconon in Quebec

Groggy and confused, I walked outside of the Montreal airport, escorted by a Narconon employee into what felt like a walk-in freezer. It reminded me of being down below in the hold of a commercial fishing boat off the west coast of Canada, while packing cod fish with ice.

When I left Vancouver it was warm enough not to wear a jacket, but this land in Quebec felt like what I imagined to be Siberia. I distinctly remember clouds of foggy, cold breath in front of me as we walked to the fancy Narconon van.

Chapter 3

Painful Beginnings in the Cult Compound

I sat down in a room that looked like a dining room of an old home or a shabby conference room in a real estate office. Minutes later, I was greeted by the registrar, Scott, a tiny shell of a man. He was hardly the person I had imagined while I was speaking to him on the phone in Vancouver. He sat down beside me and laid out some documents, which he had wanted me to read and sign.

“Read them?” I asked, “Are you kidding me!” I could barely sit up straight in the chair. My rational thinking was non-existent, to say the least. I grabbed the documents, ran my finger down the pages, and scribbled my name on the bottom line. I had no clue what I had signed and really didn’t care. I just wanted to lie down and rest.

Chapter 4

A Peek into Hell: the Stairway to Nightmares

A few days after I was in my dorm room, another student was bunked in on the top bunk . . . But not for long. I woke up early one morning and wondered where he was? He was gone! As I opened my bedroom door to go down to the bathroom, there he was sleeping in the hallway by the wall. “Now what the hell is he doing out here on the hard floor,” I thought. I just tip-toed past him, shaking my head and did my thing.

I soon learned that anything that happened at Narconon which could tarnish Narconon’s reputation was handled internally within the Scientology group of executives, and swept under the carpet. Junior staff was forbidden to discuss any abusive events or incidents of human rights abuse and health risks to students.

Chapter 5

A Cult of Paranoia

He seemed like he enjoyed his staff position of playing interrogator, but his demeanour was laughable as he sat back in his office chair grinning. He didn’t seem like, or talk like ‘the sharpest pencil in the box’ of the Narconon minions. He acted like a hung-over drunk at a circus event.

“David, are you here ‘under-cover’ as a journalist or government agent?” he asked.

“No, today I’m not — what kind of crazy question is that?” I asked.

Chapter 6

First Day in the Devil’s Den of Hell

Then, just as I was half conscious, daydreaming about walking along a beach back home, I heard a blood-curdling scream: “ASHTRAY STAND UP —THANK YOU —SIT DOWN ON THAT CHAIR —THANK YOU!!!” And this was loud — as loud as one can yell or scream.

It was so loud and shocking that I couldn’t believe what just happened. It was the craziest, bat-shit thing I had ever heard! They kept doing it over and over again.

Over in the chapel room beside us, I could hear commands: “You, look at that wall —You walk over to that wall” and “touch that wall —stop it from going away.” Then I overheard the real winner that would eventually get me in a shit heap of distress and trouble: “Did ‘YOU’ keep it from going away?”

Chapter 7

A Military Compound of Surveillance and Suffering

There is the solitude of suffering, when you go through darkness that is lonely, intense, and terrible. Words become powerless to express your pain; what others hear from your words is so distant and dierent from what you are actually suering. — John O’Donohue

Getting a straight answer, or any answer at all from most staff, was next to impossible. The dumbest things spewed from their mouths. It was like they were holding close, scary secrets. I could see the fear and uneasiness on their faces and in their cautious, whispering demeanour.

The evil crept into us one baby step at a time on an invisible “gradient” into darkness. I was blinded by the confusion and distraught over what I saw happening to many “students”.

Chapter 8

Get Back in the Box

“What a bunch of quack bullshit,” I thought, and couldn’t believe their reasoning for why people became ill while enduring long, hot periods in the sauna — especially with their bellies aching with handfuls of toxic pills.

Not only did many suffer from physical pains while in the sauna — the psychological trauma affected many. One young lad punched his fist through the sauna door window and another put his knuckles through the cooler window in the dining room. Staff didn’t seem to care —they just shrugged the events off as acceptable reactions to detoxing the mind and body.

Chapter 9

Held Against My Will

Andre stood directly in front of the door with his arms up and replied, “No, you’re not leaving — we’re not finished here yet, so sit back down!” He stood directly in front of the door with his hands on the sides. I knew I could not leave without pushing him aside — or more like throw him out the window into a snow-bank is what I felt like doing.

He was a stubborn bastard and we would clash swords again. After a few more words from John, Andre stood aside and let us out the door.

Chapter 10

Down the Rabbit Hole of Chaos

The only way I can describe Narconon Book 4a is like Alice in Wonderland’s “going down the rabbit hole” — a hellish gathering of people in chaos and confusion.

The only ‘perception’ was using my ability to see, hear and my gut feeling of, “What the hell is going on here?” I later learned that Book 4a was Scientology Training routines and Auditing Sessions directly from their religious doctrines — gradual steps of brain washing and mind control. We were being controlled and learning to control others on command.

“Good, now get the ashtray thinking that it is an ashtray. Good. Now, get the ashtray intending to go on being an ashtray. Good.” The “Yelling at an ashtray to stand up and sit back down on the chair” drill was alien all by itself. And for a few students, the ‘Case Supervisor’ would order this “imagine yourself being in that ashtray” crap.

Chapter 11

Hacking into Souls

But, of course, it takes a couple of hundred hours of auditing and mega thousands of dollars for the privilege of having your head turned into a glass Humpty Dumpty —shattered into a million pieces. —L. Ron Hubbard Jr.

There was a Scientology handbook in the student le cabinet that one supervisor would take out and read certain passages to see if the student was “CRACKED.” L. Ron Hubbard, Jr. once said to an interviewer about Scientology: “Brainwashing is nothing compared to it. The proper term would be “soul cracking.” It’s like cracking open the soul, which then opens various doors to the power that exists, the satanic and demonic powers. Simply put, it’s like a tunnel or an avenue or a doorway. Pulling that power into yourself through another person and using women, especially is incredibly insidious.”

Some students were sobbing in tears —one was crawling around the foor on his hands and knees.

Chapter 12

Free Time Watching the Sickness

Finally, the senior Ethics Officer, John, grabbed the student and took him over to the large prison across the street from Narconon. I don’t know what John was thinking? This was not a police station or hospital where the student ‘should’ have been taken to, it was a provincial prison.

The patient was delusional, hallucinating, and muttering nonsense about space aliens and invisible powers he possessed. To me, it sounded like the student was possessed — like in the movie, ‘The Exorcist’.

This scene caused so much chaos when the two arrived, that the guards handcuffed both the student and the Ethics Officer.

Chapter 13

Roller-Coastering: Ups and Downs in Life Disaster

Just because I get “something” caught in my zipper, doesn’t mean I’m in a PTS condition —it means I was in hurry!

“Roller-Coastering” was another word thrown about by staff referring to me doing very well, learning well and then plummeting into a sudden steep decline — a clear indicator to them of me being PTS. Not understanding this at first, I was offended by the label and told them off. It didn’t make any sense to me whatsoever.

Chapter 14

Confessions used to Attack their Enemy

This “Covetous Pervert” quote by Hubbard reminded me of the movie Silence of the Lambs when Anthony Hopkins, playing the starring role of Hannibal Lecter says, “We begin by coveting what we see every day. Don’t you feel eyes moving over your body, Clarice? And don’t your eyes seek out the things you want?” Narconon staff violated Hubbard’s own code of ethics in the highest degree. The lies, sexual predators, human rights abuses, and staff using drugs — all contradicted what the ‘master’ preached. They coveted.

Chapter 15

A Cult of Quackery and Confusion

“The greatest good for the greatest number of dynamics,” meaning that which is good for the Scientology group and their own survival. It’s a selfish cult that is never seen feeding the homeless or poor. These people are looked upon as ‘degraded beings’ — dead-beats, and the dregs of society. Scientology only seeks out those who are ‘able’ and “making the able more able.” Staff who are unproductive or ‘downstat’ are told to ‘get their ethics in’. Public members are told to call us when you have money and are able again. The opposite view should be true in a group that espouses to make the planet free.

Chapter 16

All Was Well in Hell: Slave Labour and Drama

Narconon Trois-Rivières had revenues in the millions and the sharks were circling for their chomps at the stock pile of money. Hundreds of thousands were sitting in Narconon’s ‘building fund’ and money was being bled off up into the cult coffers.

Chapter 17

Working for an Alien Cult: False Success Rate

The 75 million year old story of a Galactic leader named Xenu, had me mesmerized and glued to my monitor. Billions of aliens were dropped around volcanoes and blown up with hydrogen bombs and I’m supposed to believe these little buggers are attached to me and polluting my soul?

After contacting the graduates, it was an easy task to establish that the Narconon Trois-Rivières promoted success rate was False —a Lie — a Con — a Fraud. The numbers on my computer screen were printed so I could show some executives that we did not have a 76% success rate . . . not a 70% success rate — it was closer to 40% and when relapsed staff was included in the numbers, Narconon’s success rate was about 20%. I refused to participate in what I viewed as fraud.

Chapter 18

My Dark Escape from a Cult of Paranoia

I didn’t sleep for the next two days and when I did collapse in exhaustion, my nightmares were the most vivid ever — a scary and disturbing experience, waking up soaking wet several times.

I was anxious and becoming extremely stressed as I secretly packed away what I would leave with. I decided to leave most of my belongings, including my computer and personal items — only having a small travel bag filled with a few clothes and two large garbage bags filled with documents.

On the evening of October 28, 2009, I was picked up and whisked away to a secluded Motel in Montreal and hid away for three days.

Chapter 19

Help from Anonymous

We are Anonymous —Knowledge is free —We do not forget — Keep calm and expect us . . .

Walls of Trojan horse, Keystroke Logger, and Worm files appeared on the scan ‘results’ screen. Access to my computer files showed the dates between: October 28, 2009, and when I picked my computer up on Nov. 3, 2009, including the files that were accessed between those dates.

“Welcome to the church of fear and paranoia,” I thought. And I was one pissed off Irishman! “How dare they hack and violate me this way!” The Viruses appeared to be installed while my computer was in their possession before I went back to pick it up at Narconon. I contacted another Montreal Anonymous friend …

Chapter 20

Legal Battles and Educating the Community

For there is but one essential justice which cements society, and one law which establishes this justice. This law is right reason, which is the true rule of all commandments and prohibitions. Whoever neglects this law, whether written or unwritten, is necessarily unjust and wicked. — Marcus Tullius Cicero

The closing of Narconon Trois-Rivières was a milestone, but many adventures still lay ahead. Some would be over-the-top exciting, while others would nearly stretch me to the breaking point.

Chapter 21

Pressing on into the United States and Ireland

My flight arrived in Dublin on June 28, 2012, and was picked up at the airport by some activists, Pete Griffiths and John McGhee from Dublin, and others, who were there for the conference from California.

Dear Mr. Love, Thank you for making the trip to New York for an NBC News interview with you. The interview will take place tomorrow morning, July 31, and we look forward to meeting with you in person.

Chapter 22

Insane Fair Game: Dead Agent Attacks

A loud knock at my apartment door startled me one day when I was tapping away on my keyboard — deep in thought, focussed on compiling evidence documents for a government agency. I detested being dragged away from my laptop — even to answer the door if I was zeroed in on something important.

“Could all of this just be coincidence,” I kept asking myself? “No, not with this paranoid cult —I’m not the paranoid one, they are.” And just to be on the safe side, I took some more of my important evidence documents to where I worked and gave them to a trusted supervisor to store in a locked desk.

I came across a Scientology website one evening: Scientology Myths 2.0. And there I was under the Narconon page: “Facts: Narconon Controversy — Agent Provocateur David Love”. The Scientology Myths website attacked and accused me of being “an anti-Narconon extremist who has been trying to generate anti-Narconon and anti-Scientology in the press,” and stumbles along in untruths for church members to read.

Chapter 23

Spin-Doctoring Defamation Attacks

If attacked on some vulnerable point by anyone or anything or any organization, always nd or manufacture enough threat against them to cause them to sue for peace. —L. Ron Hubbard, Policy Letter of 15 August 1960.

I used to find it unbelievable how low the cult of Scientology will go to protect their image. It appears they have, and continue to, break all codes of ethical and moral standards — equal only to what the devil could think up or do.

Chapter 24

Roller Coaster ‘Journey of Life’ — What a Ride!

I think if tears were a stairway to ‘Heaven’, I would surely be there already. Whenever I drift off back to being inside the cult and the events I endured, I still do, at times, have to pull myself back out of that very dark and evil place.

I spent forty-three days in the hospital and missed a lot of school, but caught up as best I could. My sister told me many years later that the illness that had infected my bones and body was similar to what some soldiers had in the trenches. The nail that punctured my foot was full of untreated sewage . . . and I just happened to catch the wrong bug, I guess.

Chapter 25

Man on Mission Possible

Thinking back over my life, and especially my time in the hands of Scientology, I am torn between many feelings and questions. Although I understand how this insidious cult, for a time, robbed me of freedom of thought, beliefs, and even love . . . I have grown . . . and learned.

In my opinion, these are the crucial aspects of determining that YES, Scientology is a dangerous cult of human rights abuses and fraud. It blatantly, with intent and malice, violates civil and criminal laws without blinking . . . without regard for human dignity or democratic justice.

I may sound cynical and somewhat disgusted . . . because I am, but this cult of Narconon is just that, a ‘dangerous cult’ that leaves a trail of death — and victims that feel they have been mind-raped.

Chapter 26

Human Rights Commission Verdict

Following more than three years of Quebec Human Rights Commission investigations, testimony, and reviewing countless evidence documents, I was exhausted. After filing the formal complaint on August 25, 2010, the Commission delivered a ‘Resolution Decision on January 16, 2014.

I won on all counts claimed and so did the other two victims. My total was $45,000, one victim was the same at $45,000, and the third victim was awarded a total of $50,000. All three combined totalled a sum of $140,000.

“Good day Mr. Love … We learned that there is many judgments ordered against Narconon totalizing over half millions dollars (mostly for unpaid income taxes). They confirmed to us that if there is no settlement, Narconon is going to declare bankruptcy… ”

Chapter 27

Say No to Narconon at Trout Run

Scientology’s drug rehab centers were floundering around like a mutating virus being spewed about by someone in power who just wouldn’t take no for an answer. Narconon centers in Trois-Rivières, Calgary, Georgia, and elsewhere were forced to close for various reasons including human rights abuses and fraud.

I left Montreal and flew to North Carolina where I spent a few days until Cheryl and I left for Washington DC so I could do some filming of the DC Founding Church, and of course I wanted to see the White House.

On May 11, 2015, a New York Times reporter, Andrew Siddons, contacted me for an interview about Scientology’s push into Frederick. I was scheduled to give a speech to a group of concerned, Frederick citizens on May 12th at the local library.

Chapter 28

Full Circle: Love versus Goliath

When I escaped from Narconon in Quebec, I had no idea how big this ‘Goliath-Giant’ was. And even if I had known, I doubt I would have walked away. To the contrary, the more I learned, the deeper I dug in, researched, and tapped away on my keyboard. Knowing what I know today, indeed I would have done a few things differently, but not much.

...

When I think about David Miscavige and what appears to be his callous disregard for human rights, human dignity, and compassion for humanity as a whole, I am appalled. Who would, or could, allow their own father to die of what seemed like a heart attack without care? Who could send their own wife away for several years? Who could send top Scientology executives to Scientology’s private prison —the RPF and allegedly beat these same staff members? In my opinion, there may be a special place in hell for David Miscavige —similar to Dante’s ninth circle, a place called ‘Caina’ where souls who were traitors to their family are doomed. These souls are buried in ice which goes up to their faces.

Dave, a suggestion if I may. Suggest people take pictures of your book with an identifiable Scientology landmark (e.g., sign, Org, etc.) in the background, as is sometimes done with Tony Ortega's book The Unbreakable Miss Lovely. I always find such pictures fun, interesting and newsworthy. Just an idea.
