I came across quite a few discussions on the Brainwashing manual supposedly
either written by Hubbard or Beria.

Links to Brainwashing Manual

http://www.maths.qmul.ac.uk/~ade/brain-manual.html

Lavrentiy Beria(disputed originator)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lavrenty_Beria

but I was curious on what people thought as far as opinions here?

I can't seem to find any speeches on Beria that he might of spoken of similar
ideas,so I'm assuming he only had the speech mentioned to the students
of Leningrad university?

Do people feel Beria wrote this or was it Hubbard? and if so does anyone feel that Hubbards idea may of been used to engineer or plan some of Scientology
as far as it's structure.ie the OSA being set up on a soviet intelligence
or maybe naval intelligence model? Ethics? O/W reports.ect.

It seems from reading the manual so much of the outline is familiar. To me
there are similiarities to other totalitarian systems.

I welcome links,discussion and debate.

The idea has been thrown around on other forums so if anybody has some
different ideas.Feel free.

Two more links:

The 1930s "Beria" version does not exist. The Manual is pure Hubbard.

However, there is no shortage of disinformation on the topic. One of the contributors to that disinformation is Cult-paid "scholar" Gordon Melton.

This link presents a number of views:

http://www.xenu-directory.net/practices/brainwashing1.html

And 'Brainwashing Manual Parallels in Scientology', 2001.

The first page of the 'Notes' section of 'Parallels' contains a fair amount of information on the history of the Brainwashing Manual, and its various versions:

Here are a few other "historical" comments on the origin of the 'Brainwashing Manual'.

Fairly recently, Dr. Stephen Kent of the University of Alberta, Canada, wrote, in 'Brainwashing in Scientology's Rehabilitation Project Force (RPF)':

"The entire text is fraudulent (Kominsky, 1970), and in any case, all indicators point directly to Hubbard as the author."

In the latter 1950s, when the 'Brainwashing Manual' was brought to the attention of the United States Senate Internal Security Subcommittee, and the House (of Representatives) Committee on Un-American Activities, the prevailing opinion was that the "Russian Manual" was not authentic.

Asked to investigate, the Senior Specialist for Russian Affairs of the Library of Congress, Dr. Sergius Yakobson, found no evidence of its existence.

Edward Hunter, author of the 1952 book, 'Brain-Washing in Red China', wrote of the "Russian Brainwashing Manual":

"The book is a hoax, and what it has mostly achieved is to fool people who think they are getting my 'Brain-Washing in Red China' which was based on first hand sources, and put the word into the language."

Another interesting historical tid bit on the time-line of the "Russian Manual" can be found in the late 1956 version, printed by the Victorian League of Rights of Melbourne, Australia. Appearing after the "Charles Stickley" version of 1955, and after the Kenneth Goff version of 1956, it features a new Introduction by Eric Butler. The new Introduction mentions both "Stickley" and Goff:

"The material on psychopolitics was first published in America last year [1955] by a Charles Stickley, who said that he could not reveal the sources of his material without endangering individuals who had assisted him. Early this year [1956] Kenneth Goff, former American Communist, also issued the material in booklet form."

Kenneth Goff, and his supporters, have always insisted that the "Russian Textbook" dates back as far as the 1930s, yet no version can be found - including Goff's own version - that is not replete with Hubbard's distinct phrasings ("on the broad field," etc., etc.), and Dianetic and Scientology lingo.

Efforts to locate the (mythical) pre-Hubbard "Russian Textbook" have been to no avail.

I read 'The Brainwashing Manual' in 1978 or 79. I was a fireeating scientologist then. My OT5 friend told me this story about it:

The manuscript was slipped under the door at a scientology org by someone unseen. Then Hubbard and Cof$ published it as a public service!

Erh.. As a fireeating scientologist I never doubted that Hubbard wrote it! - Crediting Beria with it was a PR caper to make it sensational. In fact I believed the conspiracy story in it! (Sheesh!!!) I believe Hubturd tried to 3rd party the world into WW3!

In the org conspiracy theories was all the rage! - It was the primary marketing ploy at the time. I remember stacks of conspiracy books: 'None Dare Call it Conspiracy' and 'Operation Mind Control'. I read those two...

On a lighter note. They also sold 'Jonathan Livingston Seagull'.. Heh..

In the event that you ever decide to read it again, this is the original. (Before the "Pentecostal minister" Kenneth Goff version that replaces the original "Charles Stickley Editorial Note," and before the "American St. Hill" version that substitutes the word, "Scientology" for "Dianetics.") And the format is reader friendly.

The text that Hubbard titled, 'The Brainwashing Manual' may or may not be his most important book, but it's probably his most revealing:

Here is an excerpt from the "Manual" supposedly written by Beria:

"The mechanisms of stimulus-responce are easily understood. The body takes pictures of every action in the environment around an individual. When the environment includes brutality, terror, shock, and other such activities, the mental image picture gained contains in itself all the ingredients of the environment. It the individual, himself, was injured during that moment, the injury, itself, will re-manifest when called upon to respond by an exterior"

Sounds alot like the basis of Dianetics...including the term "mental image
picture"...

I recall seeing this book in the early seventies...my instinct at the time
was that it was written by Hubbard.

In the above example, obviously Beria was quoting LRH's 1938 Excalibur without attribution. After all, the Russians stole it, didn't they? :whocares:

This thread covers the subject pretty well.

Any time that this subject comes up, two types of people will usually appear - sooner or later:

The first group consists of true believing Scientologists - in or out of the Scientology organization - to argue that the Brainwashing Manual is genuine. This becomes complicated when the assortment of Hubbard's tall tales - and "smoke blowing" - on the topic, is presented.

The Brainwashing Manual was originally used by Hubbard as a "Black Propaganda" vehicle, and as such, per his own (1960s/1970s) "Black propaganda tech" writings, any Black Propaganda action should keep its actual source hidden.

The original (1955) Brainwashing Manual contained no author attribution, outside of the "Note," at the beginning, by "Charles Stickley" (Hubbard), and the implication that Stalin's Chief of Secret Police, Beria - or a communist psychiatrist working for Beria - was the author.

There was also no printer or publisher noted. It was completely mysterious, although it did mention Dianetics several times, as an adversary of Communism that (per "Beria") needed to be stamped out, etc.

Hubbard couldn't resist bragging to Scientologists about his newly "discovered" secret Russian text, and - typically - he talked too much, and - in an attempt to confuse its actual origin - told various contradictory stories about it in late 1955/early 1956.

And then the Brainwashing Manual faded away for a while.

As for the second group, it consist of politically oriented (not Scientologists) "Kenneth Goff people."

In late 1956, and through the 1960s, a part time Pentecostal minister and anti-Communist crusader (Kenneth Goff) made his own copies of the (non-copyrighted) Brainwashing Manual, replaced the front page "Stickey note" with his own, and started distributing it on his own. This further increased confusion as to its origin.

Around that time, Hubbard decided that it was safe to identify Scientology with the Brainwashing Manual, and had latter versions (1960s) printed with (paraphrase): "Published as a Public Service by Scientology," etc., on the back cover.

In the early 1970s, after "Communism" was no longer a "hot button" with the general public, Hubbard shifted over to calling his "enemies" Nazis, and the "Russian Communist Brainwashing Manual" (that "attacked 'patriotic' Dianetics") became largely obsolete as a propaganda device. And it began to fade away from most "Scientology bookstores" (in Orgs).

One last printing, by the Scientology St. Hill Organization in 1968, substituted the word "Scientology" for the word "Dianetics," throughout the Manual, even in the 1955 "Charles Stickey Note" (!).

Aside from all of this, perhaps the most interesting thing about the Manual, it that - carefully dissected and examined - it appears to be the "Blueprint" for Scientology.

Although I'm not a member of Operation Clambake Message Board, I came across this thread on the topic of 'The Brainwashing Manual'.

http://ocmb.xenu.net/ocmb/viewtopic.php?p=270365&sid=dd4f567fbb7fe56f4ec80054c8f14f84

One minor note: At the very end of the thread, it's stated, mistakenly, that Ron Jr. (Nibs) transcribed 'The Brainwashing Manual' from Ron Sr.'s taped dictation. It was Ron Jr.'s wife, Henrietta, and a secretary, Barbara Bryan, who did the transcribing.

Something that can be used to free people can also be used to enslave them.

Hubbard mentions this in various places.

Thanks for the Hubbard quote.

If you're interested in examining this area, then I suggest taking the time to look over these links:

Hope that you find this information helpful.

I finally realize what's going on. Ron built a church and an organization, got thousands of people involved, then made it into an insane asylum. He WANTED it this way! He knew most of the people would then leave, thereby aquiring the OT ability of "Willing to give up one's next hundred million", an incredible havingness which also releases one from all former religious teachings. That is the real OT level, to have the theta ablity to leave the church. WE are the free people. WE ARE STILL ALL PART OF RON'S PLAN!

That's cute :)

and, now Ron has all the money He took with Him...

Or; there will be no 'Mission Into Time' next time. Davey stole it all!

Below are two posts from ChrisO, from the 'Siberia USA - 1955 plan' thread on ESMB.

http://www.forum.exscn.net/showpost.php?p=1799&postcount=4

Firstly, it should be noted, to avoid confusion, that Massimo Introvigne (along with Gordon Melton) is a professional "scholar" on the topic of "new religions," and (along with Melton) as been employed by various cultic groups - as an "expert."

ChrisO is an independent historian, and his most recent comments on 'The Brainwashing Manual' are, I think, noteworthy:

"The earliest one [version of the 'Manual'] is the Charles Stickley version which LRH almost certainly wrote and distributed..."

http://www.forum.exscn.net/showpost.php?p=2188&postcount=14

The Scientology Cult still doesn't quite know what to do with its (1955) 'Russian Communist Brainwashing Manual' - to either use it as a propaganda vehicle, or to hide it as an all too revealing embarrassment.
