Some public gals danced at night in titty bars for course money. ( I never heard of gals in the SO doing that kind of moon lighting ).

Not SO girls, but I knew a couple of org staff girls who were dancers on the side (late 1970's, early 80's). With the knowledge and OK of the GO at the time. Dancing was a way to make enough money to live on, while spending max time on staff.

It bothered me then that kids couldn't be getting much time or attention from their parents & 'gifts' seemed to not exist.

The way kids are still treated still bothers me.

Parents want to thrown away their own life blindly, ok . . . but their kids lives?

It bothered me greatly. The level of child neglect I saw seemed criminal. Kids growing up functionally illiterate because parents on staff couldn't be bothered to supervise their learning to read. Kids dropping out of school to join staff/SO.

It made me vow to never have my kids get anywhere near an SO recruiter, and was a factor in my exit.

Do you know if ASI housing was provided under the table or if it was included in that $50-80,000 as a valuated compensation for tax reporting? Or, if they paid rent back to ASI?

I believe the individuals paid the PAC Estates Org whatever the going rate for SO berthing was ($30 per week, $50 per week?) out of their pay. No need for it to be under the table. I think the Bridge Publications staff on regular minimum wage in SO berthing did similarly.

True, the heavy recruiting of children did drive some good public away from the cult.

Nothing like having your kid come home all excited with a SO contract !

Then when they asked me about it , I said " have the kid sign ". They replied " kid wasn't old enough to sign". I laughed & told 'em to wait until the kid could sign .


I solved that whole deal by never allowing my kids in any org ever again.

There - apparently - was at least some limit to my stupidity. LOL !

Interesting. Isn't ASI supposed to be separate from the Church for tax purposes? If housing is provided at significantly below market rate then seems to me the IRS could assign their own valuation and require a retroactive adjustment.

Also, the property tax exemption for religious property doesn't apply to buildings or sections designated as hotel and restaurant. If berthing is being rented then could it possibly be classified as taxable?

If we assume that an SO member works 80 hours a week (it could be as high as 120-130) this could conservatively constitute a 6 day work week of 13.33 hours per day. At the Federal Minimum Wage of $7.25 per hour the gross pay would be $30,160. per year, not including Over-Time. If we assume the actual pay and only 80 hours per week at $50. then the gross pay would be $2600. per year. In other words, using this example, there is a net cost of labor benefit to the Church of $27, 560. per staff per year or the equivalent of someone buying the entire Bridge for $400,000. every 14.51 years.

I suppose the equation becomes less favorable to the Church if you back in $3.00 a day for food and whatever they charge to an ASI or Bridge employee for housing and some irreducible level of medical but we get the idea - an SO recruit is worth someone buying their full Bridge about every 14 - 16 years without having to provide any actual service.

That is grounds for a lot of self interest in a recruitment spiel.

Now - what happened to your "inheritance".

My friend, who joined staff, told me they find out that you are getting an inheritance - in auditing...and they GET ALL OF IT....you are manipulated out of your inheritance or made to feel shamed by not being a true group member.

I don't know if it is significantly below market rate. I vaguely remember the figure of $30 per week per head, from around 1990. That is for living in a dorm (pic below is the room I was in 1986-1995; the middle set of bunk beds we got rid of around 1990 leaving a mere 9 beds there instead of 12). That figure had been computed from utility costs etc, so I heard. I don't know what the going rate for flop houses in LA was as that time, I must admit.

Of course, ASI berthing wouldn't look exactly like that; and a room for a couple would usually be more comfortable than a dorm for singles. Plus I have no idea what they were charged.

OMG! I think my needle just went wildly back and forth in a jerky motion. Is that my old bunk and striped mattress? Can't be. I think my mattress was only about 4 inches thick. They must have upgraded or just moved old mattresses that had the pungent tang of bed bugs and dip to Pigs Berthing.

In Lebanon Hall, which was the old Cedars nurses berthing, the larger rooms had a hall door at each end so there would be two stacks of bunks in tandem, 3 high between the doors and 3 stacks, 3 high end to end along the outer window wall. So 15 people to a room. Some rooms had even more. I saw similar bunk configurations at Flag also, only at Flag those clothes would likely not be dry.

Maybe they may treat it something like a not-for-profit Youth Hostel for tax purposes and the rents are a "donation".

BTW, for anyone anticipating one of those nicer rooms for married couples, they often share the same bathroom with a dorm like this.

Made a call and got a little more data on SO and RTC.

SO pay was boosted to $50/week circa 93.

From mid 90's to mid 20''s there were not weekly or monthly bonuses in RTC except for a couple years of monthly bonuses, don't remember the amounts.

Through that time period there were big year end bonuses. # 1, 2 and three as largest were always DM, Laurise and Shelly. +/-$25,000. IG level bonus was +/- $15,000. Line staff and division head were $1-4,000.

early 2,000 there was a proposal being worked on internally for a $200,000 annual salary for DM, no conformation on when, how this was finally influenced.

Oh, one more. Early 2,000's, RTC hit cash reserves of $30,000,000.00. All based on value of advanced technical services delivered or something like that.

Apparently RTC's year end bonuses were bases on overall trending stats in the orgs; the SO service orgs at least. I remember in the mid 90s there was suddenly this huge push to get the stats in the SO service orgs into a year's normal trend at the end of the year. I specifically remember VSD (Value of Services Delivered, and I think it was specifically for the confidential levels).

I really don't remember that happening before 1994 or so. I remember hearing it had to do with RTC's bonuses.

I seem to recall being threatened with an RTC ethics mission if this didn't happen.

I was astonished a few years back to find out from a couple of ex-Int people (no names no pack drill) that when one couple left they had $20,000 in the bank, the other had $16,000 and their car. These were people who left in the 90's.

I do remember the INT/CMO/RTC dining at PAC was a lot better than the PAC org food when I was there in 1984.

Mick, yeah I remember some of the Int folks having lots of money. I remember Marc Yaeger buying a $1,500 ergonomic chair for himself personally, and actually wanted to investigate it when I was reports officer RTC.

Conditions at Int were much better than anywhere else, except maybe for FLB/FSO under Debbie cook. There IS a massive difference with actual and every week $30/50 and part or no pay. Massive difference with good food and have to make your own. Getting uniforms, and none. Having expenses paid and none.

While, no doubt, some people - particularly that got commissions on sales or reg cycles - made some fairly decent money.

The rank & file regular SO people not in some odorless poo-poo exalted not very public place kind of post ? They were $30- to $50 a week WHEN THEY EVEN GOT PAID AT ALL.

I'd imagine the senior cs on the ship got decent pay as was in the public eye along with the very few auditors on the ship. I've heard from others they looked pretty well dressed & not in the rough looking uniforms of flag, etc.

PAC ? Lordy. SO people apparently had no deodorant . . . . . . EVER !

At least through the 80's, 90's and mid 2,010's, all SO pay was standardized. The SO was quite socialist in that way, pay in RTC was the same as for everyone, same for WDC, CMO Int, etc. etc. The only difference was bonuses and commissions. Some people got cards for expenses, but most SO had very few expenses, even at the Int level. Until DM took over, to my knowledge SO pay was always met at int and gold levels, and FSO. Other areas were more questionable!
 
When I was in OSA US I made anywhere between $20-$7.50/week. I remember my paper money being stapled to an invoice type sheet and the coins taped to it. This was in the late 90's.
