Comparison of Book Editions

Many thanks to Tansy for lending me these two books.

This is a comparison between two editions of Scn 8-8008 both published by Bridge:

1. ISBN 0-88404-429-7, 1989/90 edition;
2. ISBN 978-1-4031-4416-4, 2007 edition.

Both books are the same overall size. 2 is printed on bright white paper, which looks flashier but the glare makes it harder to read. The cover design is new, a stylized design of a large gold infinity sign in the middle of a smaller 8008 on its side, over a white sunburst design.

The dust cover blurb is very different, but not worth detailing.

The "To the Reader" page is similar, but has some interesting differences. The revised edition, 2, says: "The Church does not accept individuals who desire treatment of physical or mental illness but, instead, requires a competent medical examination for physical conditions, by qualified specialists, before addressing their spiritual cause." Read it again carefully. It looks like doublespeak to me.

1 is copyright 1989, 1990 by L. Ron Hubbard Library; 2 is copyright 1952, 1953, 2001, 2002, 2006, 2007 by L.Ron Hubbard Library, with Artwork copyright 2006 L. Ron Hubbard Library.

There are other minor differences on that page.

"Important Note": The crepuscule example was removed. The section has been rewritten in part, but contains nothing untoward. The section entitled "Definitions" in 1 is replaced by "Glossary" in 2. "To aid reader comprehension, L. Ron Hubbard directed the editors to provide a glossary. This is included [etc.]"

Editors' Foreword: 1 says it's the textbook to accompany his PDC lectures. 2 says it's in two parts: Book 1 is the PDC textbook; Book 2 corresponds to "The Factors" lectures, London, March and April 1953.

Chapter 1, The Beingness of Man.

There are many small changes, such as "then" for "the" or the addition or subtraction or substitution of an article "a" or "the", and in punctuation. Bizarre is the seeming absence in 2 of semi-colons (apart from in lists), resulting in many sentences beginning with "And" or "But", and even one sentence fragment beginning with "For". But generally, the whole reads far easier with the revised punctuation. Sometimes several words are omitted, but these usually do look like an error in the original, rather than a political change for the current version.

Several headings are added to 2, which makes for easier reading. The headings seem natural. All the footnotes in 1 are nixed. Often a paragraph in 1 is broken into two or more paragraphs in 2 for easier reading.

The first three paragraphs of 1 are omitted in 2.

1. "Built on organized axioms, Scientology..."
2. "Built on organized axioms, the science..."

Next page, again "the science" replaces "Scientology". However, same paragraph, 1: "It is derived from closely defined axioms which..." and 2: "It is derived from closely defined axioms of Scientology which..." Note that in this second case, 1 reads better than 2.

Para 8. Compare the two versions:

1. "The well-beingness and, indeed, the continued survival of mankind depend upon an exact knowledge of his own capabilities; and thus, more particularly, of his own relationship to knowledge itself."

2. "The well-beingness and, indeed, the continued survival of Mankind depend upon an exact knowledge of his own capabilities, and, this more particularly, of his relationship to knowledge itself."

In the paragraphs on the Dynamics, which are laid out much better in 2, the definitions are the same as before, except for the second:

1. "econd, the urge to survive through sex in the procreation of children;"
2. "Second, the urge to survive through sex and the extension of children;"

Note again that 1 reads better than 2, which suggests integrity on the part of the current editors.

A few paragraphs on (underslashes here indicate the word is typeset in italics):

1. "[N]either zero nor infinity are as themselves discoverable in a real universe but, as absolutes, may be posed as symbols for an abstraction which could be supposed to exist but which does not exist in fact."

2. "Neither _zero_ or _infinity_ are, as themselves, discoverable in the real universe but, as _absolutes_, may be posed as symbols for an abstraction which could be supposed to exist in fact."

This is a BIG difference!

This entire paragraph in 1 (p. 14) has been omitted and does not appear in 2: "Several new concepts germane to the fields of science and humanities almost independent of its own work have been introduced by Scientology. The first of these is the proper definition of a static. The next is the first actual definition of zero and its differentiation from infinity in terms of mathematics. Another is the basic definition of space which hitherto was omitted from the field of physics except in terms of time and energy."

Interesting omission here, (p.18 in 1):
1. "Nevertheless, the development of the technology...has provided considerable data and technology in...and about the body, the history of the evolutionary line, the identity of the genetic entity and much of the construction of the body itself, as well as the construction of the real universe."

2. "Nevertheless, the development of the technology...provided considerable data and technology in...and about the body itself, as well as the construction of the real universe.

In the long note right after, the two versions are virtually identical, except:
1. "Dianetics is a science which addresses..."
2. "Dianetics is a therapy which addresses..."

The ten short paragraphs on p. 22/23 of 1, "Scientology is the science ... Scientology has to give", don't appear in 2.

-----
End of Chapter 1.

I don't know how detailed I will be with the rest of the book. I haven't gone through it enough to say how chopped up it is, or isn't.

Me too. I think what they are saying between the lines is that only
those with mental illness caused by physical means which are cured first qualify for scn services. ( bit B3 defficiency for example )

I can't immediately come up with an idea of why they'd wish to put
this at the beginning of a book.

Wow....you guys work pretty fast.

Looks like Lil Davey is editing out the parts he doesn't understand....:grouch:

Look forward to more DoF.

Standard disclaimer. We don't do medical stuff. Honest. No really. Etc. It's been there for donkey's. 1965?

They got a problem with the NOTs stuff addressing physical conditions, of course, as detailed elsewhere on the net and I can't be bothered to look it up.

But, the point is that NOTs (especially NOTs 43 - 'Handling of a Physical Condition') is *secret*. Keith Henson wasn't even allowed to send a copy to the FDA. Not allowed by the *court*.

I corrected the number in the quote, Zinj.

I don't know the court details, but I accept your data. Everyone except churchies can find out enough details of it via Google--I just checked.

Thanks, and, I think it's that (and Lisa McPherson) that's the impetus behind the new disclaimer. CYA means 'Cover Your Ass'

Paul, if you get around to it, I'd be curious to know if the references to Aleister Crowley in the tapes have been edited out.

There is a odd ("joking") reference at the very beginning of tape #1 by Hubbard, to himself, as "the Prince of Darkness."

Then on tape #18 comes the reference to Crowley as his "very good friend."

Additional tapes that feature references to Crowley or Magic(k) can be found in #30, 35, 40, and 59.

Other tapes of interest are (also) 40 - reference to the saying of "Eternity, eternity, eternity" by religions (as a manipulative tactic): "There isn't any such thing as time, how the hell could there be an eternity?" (Would fall under the category of "enemy tactics" later used by Hubbard on Scientologists.)

Tape 35: "Just too many thetans - maybe there are two minds up at the top, maybe four, maybe eight."

TAPE 39 (side 2) : Reference to using "beams" to induce abortions up to three months. "It's just deadly, one, two, three," etc.

There's more, but these -in a quick review - stand out. Tracing them down would be quite a bit of work.

The Crowley references - particularly the one on tape #18 - are of most interest.

Has the Beast 666 been edited from Scientology's PDC materials?

8-8008 Chapters 2 & 3 (2007 Edition)

Chapter 2: OK. Minor changes not detailed.

Chapter 3: Minor changes not detailed.

1. (p.30) "Having and not-having form between themselves the interchanges which become survival."
2. (p.30) "Having and not-having form, themselves, the interchanges which become survival."

1. (p.31) "One is as alive as he has space and as he can alter and occupy that space."
2. (p.31) "One _is_ [italics] as much as he has space and as much as he can alter and occupy that space."

1. (p.31/32) Four paras "Space is the viewpoint..." to "...it is everywhere" are omitted at this point in 2.

Section headed "Energy" in both:

1. Para 1 "The basic unit..." is omitted in 2.

1. (p.34) "The higher the frequency, the shorter the wavelength is considered to be on the gradient scale of wavelengths. The lower the frequency, the longer the wavelength is considered to be on a gradient scale."

2. (p.32) "The larger the number, the lower the wavelength is considered to be on the gradient scale of wavelengths. The smaller the number, the higher the wavelength is considered to be on the gradient scale."

Section headed "Matter" in both:

1. (p.35) "Matter is a condensation of energy."
2. (p.32) "Matter is supposed to be a condensation of energy."

1. Final para (p.36) "In order to have space...viewpoint." is omitted in 2.

End of Chapter 3.

OK, I think I've compared enough in these three chapters to make some general comments.

If you are a serious Scientologist, who uses this book for reference, whether a churchie or not, my opinion is that you should get this new book. Buy it on eBay or something if you don't want to pay the CofS directly. The earlier copy is very different in places, with different meanings, not just different words. The omitted passages may appear later in the book, or they may not, but I am not talking about those passages particularly.

What I find very interesting seems to be exemplified by that quote about wavelengths/frequencies. The prior edition is much more clear than the revised edition, where Hubbard garbles the terms. No way would diehard SO members revise it like that unless it is genuinely true to the original dictation!

??? At least some of the changes seem intent on 'aligning' Ron's immortal word with reality. (Unlikely to succeed) Why would you think that SO people wouldn't alter 'source' if they were told to?

More to the point is that wavelength/frequency example shows that they apparently didn't even when it would have been preferable for them to do so and no-one would know. I agree they have done so in the past.

That example shows to me the lack of education of Lil Dave....and lack of exposure to scientific writings...

Understood. And thanks for the ongoing reports on what you have examined.

Just in case anyone has the book/tape set combo, and has the time and inclination, that tape 18, "Very good Friend" reference is the main one. If that is chopped out, then that probably means that serous editing of "embarrassing" content is taking place.

There's also the 'Research and Discovery' series - earlier editions, and - I guess - the latest one, and that would also be of interest.

As a note, the edits in the new books were not done "by SO members under DM's orders," they were done by DM himself. And this includes punctuation changes, every last one of them.
