AAARRRRRGGGGG!!

I am the product of an American education (withhold wisecracks, please) :)

Which means I speak one language fluently. English. Period.

Yeah, fine, enough Spanish to order what I want & shop in a Spanish/Cuban market.

Some basic German.

(well, and I write & type typonese)

anyway, when it comes to Eastern European languages, aside from, "hello", "goodbye", and "I love you", in Russian, the only Russian I know is some really, really filthy swearing. (I mean, I could make a grown Man's ears bleed with some of the words & phrases I learned.)

I cannot speak any Serb, any more Russian, no Polish.......you Guys get it already. If the alphabet is Cyrillic, I am useless in reading, or writing it.

So, tonight, I am talking to someone in Eastern Europe.

DISCLAIMER: HOMELAND SECURITY, OSA, FBI, CIA, MOUSSAD, MI-5, MI-6, ATF, WHOMEVER, WE WERE DISCUSSING SPORTS & OTHER THINGS.

O.K.-now that that little matter is addressed, I was trying like HELL to communicate with this person. (Their English was, poor).

It is so frustrating to speak two different languages. I mean, in the same room, at least you have facial information, right?

:duh:

O.K.-rant done.

I'm the same way, Klidov. I speak English. Just enough Spanish/Mexican to order food and cocktails and find a bathroom in Mexico.

I had two Japanese students stay with me many years ago. They can write English very well. But they can't speak the language. I was amazed at how well we could communicate with made up sign language and facial expressions.

I can't imagine trying to communicate with someone via the net - when you both don't speak the same language.

Good job that you are at least trying.

One of the most exhausting jobs I ever did was 3 months in a little town in Brazil. My boss spoke english, and he was there for 1 week in 3. The rest of the time I furiously crammed as much portuguese into my brain as I could (I didnt speak a word of it before I got there). Constantly having to translate every single word spoken to you and spoken by you is EXHAUSTING!! Particularly when you have to teach people how to do things, frustrating as hell...

When I got on the plane home and a flight attendant asked how I was in English I nearly cried!

It took me almost a year to get used to a "neutral" Eastern European facial expression without realizing the other person was not angry.

I was used to German facial expressions (I still have family there, and here in the States that are German-born), but a Russian face took some time for me.

Now? It is no issue. :)

If I had learned another language as a child, it would be different. And I am spoiled, because most everyone I know, even if they grew-up behind the former Iron Curtin, speaks English.

(btw-the little Russian I speak makes Russian-speakers laugh because I someone get a "Chicago accent" with the words. I have been told I will never be mistaken for a native.)

:hattip:

Next time you have trouble understanding someone on the phone and wish to quickly end the communication, just crumble up a piece of paper next to speaker of phone and it will sound as if you're having a bad connection. You then have an excuse to hang up.

I tried a half dozen online translators to decode the moonspeak...

This is the best I got:

Our hit sentence horizontal non- thickly high, yes right our 还 meeting 说 normally 话.Our 觉 profit our 应 该 练 习.哎 呀.你 们 watching non- 懂 our mark 话 our 还 爱 你 们.

Which is almost worse then the original :D

Ahahahaha! All I did was say I spoke chinese, but I needed more practice at it. And also that I loved you. Pretty much all I remember how to write, it's been a long time since I had a really intensive class. I need to start studying again!

所有的基础是属于我们

Mine had an even worse upbringing...it was raised in New Mexico where no one speaks ANY language fluently!:p

I've always liked New Mexico, although I've never lived there.

Just passing through, it always seemed like there were thetans in them thar hills.

Also, it is the location for my currently favorite TV show: Breaking Bad.

Have you tried free online translators? You write what you want to say in English, preferably simple English, then translate it to %^&$ian and send that, either by email or Skype or whatever Instant Message program you are using. He sends back something in %^&$ian, which you plug into the translator and get an English translation of. It's not perfect, but it's better than nothing.

I love Breaking Bad! It's fun guessing where they shot certain scenes from.

I was born and raised here and I love it. Some people find it a little too desert-like for their tastes but it's all beautiful to me. :)
