The picture on page 4 of this thread brought back an entire morning on the Apollo to me, i would have posted earlier but wanted to see if i could remember anything else.

I remembered i did in fact help LRH bathe and dress, i didn't do that shift often so i think thats why i had forgotten. He was running late and needed to get a move on as he had an important meeting off the ship later that day.

The photo was a PR photo as much as anything, to show how relaxed and informal business on the ship was.(what a joke, not laughing).

After the photo had been taken the door was firmly closed and myself and photographer were left outside. I don't remember the photographers name but he had been at St.Hill a few weeks earlier, unbeknownst to me there was a lot of bad press re Scientology in England at the time, and it was important for Scientologists to see that reports about the ship were unfounded.

I spoke to the photographer for about an hour + whilst periodically peering in through the porthole in the door. He asked a lot of Questions, most of which i told acceptable truths about, opposed to the truth.I think he was a Scientologist but not privy to the Sea org and sea org business, apart from which i needed to cover myself. At the time i knew i needed to get as far away as possible from the Apollo.

"I have previously mentioned Sam, a heavy drug case, working on the deck of the Avon. He was assigned to hose down the decks. Unfortunately Sam connected the hose to the fuel line and began spraying the deck with fuel. There was a lot of smoking going on onboard the ships, including Hubbard. Had any of that fuel caught alight, the Avon would have gone off like a bomb and it would have closed the port. No wonder Hubbard went absolutely loopy."

Ahh this has to be where he came up with the idea for that paragraph in the HCOB or HCOPL on drugs, maybe even LSD, where he talks about an individual is supposed to be minding the boat and he is up on venus.

Couple of things here, i don't remember this exact incident but there were lots of incidents and i mean lots. To be expected when you set sail on a large vessel, plus two smaller ones and no one, except a couple of people has any experience of being at sea, let alone actually running a small flotilla. As has being proven,Hubbard himself didn't exactly have a great naval record. I find it astonishing that any of us are left to tell the tale, let alone the Scientology story.

With regards the drug issue,i don't know the statistics for people who entered Scientology after having being on drugs but i do know back in the 60s there were certainly a few, one of my own stepmothers had been into LSD when she found Scientology and put her getting off drugs, just like Kirstie Alley down to Scientology.Such a shame one replaces an addiction for a cult.

It didn't take much for Hubbard to go looney, whether there was good reason or not.Often there was not.It might have seemed like a great adventure in the beginning,i thought so in 1967 but that soon changed. In hindsight i don't think anyone(except hardcore Hubbardites) would have joined the Sea Org in 67 if they knew what they know now.

He pulled me in

Zinj

My luck as it were Zinj, as you have been a great partner/counter point to many of my thoughts....

I may not have arrived at the viewpoint I am at now if it were not for having someone to play the ball back to my side of the court.

alex (not that I agree!)

This was not the incident that blew it open.

What happened was in about August 1968 (I was not on the ship, but heard the story). Hubbard had received a writeup from Pam Kemp about rehabbing drug "highs" at her Orange County Centre.

Hubbard was on the bridge and a large ship was passing by, very closely. He asked the officer in charge (I believe it was John O'Keefe) why he had not alerted anybody about the potential danger. John was quite "chilled out" and said there were no worries, all was cool. This spooked Hubbard and he ordered the ship moved out of danger.

Another incident at the same period, a deckhand was supposed to be holding a rope and just "vacated" and let the rope slip out of his hands, allowing a boat to drift away.

I understand that it was these two incidents that triggered the focus on drug use. (Mind you, he hadn't taken into account any current use on board)

Exactly! Both of which were rife.

As i've said in my story there were a couple of guys locked up because supposedly they had been found with drugs in their cabin, how true or not that was i couldn't say, this happened in Corfu. All i remember is they were locked up for a few days and then they were gone, never to be seen or heard of again.

I could be wrong but i know that people were charged with things they had not done,so until i know different i'm inclined to think the charges were bogus, unless somebody else knows different?

Yes, this did happen, i can't remember if it was John O'Keefe or not. I remember thinking we were all doomed. If i remember rightly it was a larger vessel and it was very close. Not the only time i thought we were finished.
