Monday night at 9 pm, our UK readers will get a chance to see a 1-hour documentary on Channel 4 put together by director Joseph Martin and producer Danielle Clark. The title is “Scientologists at War,” and we expect it to feature the rise of Independent Scientology that is proving to be such a challenge to the church itself.

New Documentary

Oscar-nominated film company, Roast Beef Productions, is about to release a new documentary covering aspects of the Independent Scientology movement. A number of Independent Scientologists were interviewed. I have no idea what the final film will cover; or in what light it will cast our efforts to expose CoS criminality and protect people, but judging from their track record, these guys are first class. To be shown on Channel 4 (UK), 9pm 17 June 2013. Likely to be available on 4oD (web streaming) shortly afterwards. Scientologists at War followed. This is the story of Marty Rathbun, a once high-level member of the Church of Scientology. Marty defected to begin an independent Scientology movement, away from everything he saw wrong in the religion.

Scientology-cynic and journalist, Tony Ortega describes the Church as having ‘developed a game-plan of how to deal with investigators, journalists and defectors through severe harassment’.

In the film, this harassment comes to Marty in the relentlessly childish form of the Squirrel Busters. ‘Squirrel’ being, for some reason, a term to describe a Scientology defector.

The immature but relentless abuse over 200+ days offers a darker side to the religion that is often mocked then brushed aside. Marty hints that his harassed living is karma for his past involvement with Scientology’s more disturbing methods, but regardless of justification, it makes for a rare look into the more obscure world of a Scientologist.

I wonder how many lawyers scrutinised every frame of Scientologists At War – no, not the original title of Battlefield Earth but Channel 4’s documentary film about trouble in the organisation. Given Scientology’s noted embrace of the courts, quite a few, I suspect, but there is still enough scandal here to entertain those whose idea of a good time is mocking Tom Cruise for actually believing in aliens as well as being paid to pretend to fight aliens.

But the focus of the film is on those who, while they’ve left the Church of Scientology, haven’t given up on the tenets drawn up by former science fiction writer L Ron Hubbard: they are now calling themselves Independent Scientologists. They think that the first lot – Cruise’s pal David Miscavige and co – have lost the faith, not because of the aliens or for using e-meters to measure whether a person has been cleansed of spiritual hang-ups (available for sale on e-Bay), but for getting distracted from all that. In return, they’ve been dubbed heretics and “squirrels” – don’t ask.

Then there’s the delightfully-named Marty Rathbun, once the Inspector General of the Church of Scientology’s Religious Technology Centre (which apparently meant enforcing registered trademarks and copyrights), but now the most notorious defector who dished the dirt claiming, among other things, that the leadership beat people up, spied on members and regularly got together to drink whisky and have a right old laugh at secret recordings of Tom Cruise’s most personal confessions.

For an outsider, it’s almost impossible to know the truth (though one does come away feeling sorry for poor Tom), but there’s a peculiar fascination to the story, which takes in so many worldly elements: celebrity, money and the extraordinary life of the late Hubbard himself. Yet for all its strangeness, maybe the schism is the most normal thing about this new church – after all, every other religion has split at some time, hasn’t it?

I was going to post about this programme but see I was beaten to it. I'm so lazy. Just now got around to doing it.

I've got my popcorn ready. Will tell my sis to check it out and have a good laugh.

After that came a seriously bizarre double bill; Scientologists at Warand Confessions of a Male Stripper, both of which are set to air on Channel 4 in the coming weeks. While the former admittedly took an interesting viewpoint – focusing on a former member of the Church of Scientology who actually wanted to continue practicing it – it didn’t really do much with it besides the standard practice of “aren’t Scientologists creepy?”

Excerpt:
Meet director Joseph Martin and producer Danielle Clark, the young duo behind tonight’s 1-hour documentary on the UK’s Channel 4, “Scientologists at War.”

The program is part of Channel 4's “First Cut” series, which features the work of up-and-coming talent in documentary film making.

We ran into Martin and Clark at the home of Marty Rathbun while we were writing about Paul Marrick and Greg Arnold, two former Scientology private eyes.

The third member of their team was Michael Simkin, a veteran filmmaker whose work has taken him around the globe…

The three of them asked us to get involved with the project, and we spent some time with them in Los Angeles, Houston, and in New York. Even then, last fall, they were getting threat letters from Scientology attorneys, who were accusing them of not trying to get the church’s side of things. The truth was, just about every day, we saw Simkin trying to get through to church officials to arrange interviews or tours, to no avail.

We hear that Channel 4 has continued to fend off an onslaught of sound and fury from Scientology’s attorneys, but it hasn’t stopped the airing of the program, which is scheduled for 9 pm tonight in the UK.

Here Are the 5 Docs to See from Sheffield, From Scientology to Nipple Play

"Scientologists at War," Joseph Martin

It has long been troubling for filmmakers to make films that lift the curtain on the Church of Scientology. "Scientologists at War" gives an excellent history of the church, after L. Ron Hubbard. One of these men, Marty Rathbun, led the church under David Miscavige, but he has lately come under great scrutiny for defecting from the church and practicing an independent strain of Scientology. The film tracks Rathbun's life as a set of people, calling themselves Squirrel Busters, stand outside Rathbun's house, documenting the life of the man they see as a traitor. The film is a bizarre but fascinating take of one man's faith in a religion that he takes great pains to criticize and hold onto.

Thank you for your comments regarding the upcoming film FIRST CUT: Scientologists at War. Our First Cut strand, which showcases new directors, covers a diverse range of subjects which we feel viewers will find both interesting and informative, further highlighting our commitment to new talent and providing our audiences with an alternate point of view. This particular documentary examines the Independent Scientology movement and the high level defectors who have publicly renounced their membership from the Church of Scientology including Marty Rathbun (a former Inspector General of Ethics in the Church of Scientology). We believe that this is a legitimate topic for an investigative documentary on the Church of Scientology and the recent developments affecting it; particularly how it treats former members who have decided to leave the organisation. We appreciate you writing in with your comments, however, might we suggest that you take the time to watch the programme before you make any judgements as to the content. The programme will screen on Monday 17 June at 9pm on Channel 4. Thank you.

Just finished watching this documentary. It was great!

It mostly focused on Marty Rathbun and his wife Mosey (Monique), but we also got some good turns from Tony Ortega and selected others including Karen de la Carriere, Mike Laws and of course the Squirrel Busters.

The star of the show, undoubtedly was Marty’s wife, Monique. He is very lucky to have found such a wonderful life-partner. Tony O also came across very well, as did Mike and Karen.

The Squirrel Busters not so much. In fact one of the women came across as a complete loon. Which of course they aren’t. :coolwink:

Martin Padfield made a very brief appearance at the conference we held last year (Cult in Your Back Yard – available on my YouTube channel) and was very good. We even had some footage at last year’s IAS event protest, and I made a very brief appearance and didn’t come across so well.

But, they did use some of my footage of the IAS event in 2007 (also available on my YT channel) which I was chuffed about – I am now an official documentary cameraman!

Amusingly the cult denies that they placed Marty under surveillance, that the Squirrel Busters were anything to do with them or that they have ever harassed anyone. :duh:

What is the point of lying about this stuff that can so easily be proved? Stupid cult.

Hopefully someone will make this available on YT soon and you can all watch it.
