Flag Down 2014

Nice weather in May! Winter the Dolphin! Pooks at the beach! (Okay, everything in North Pinellas County I like is not in Clearwater but if Flag Down 2014 happens, there will be tons of press locally.)

Maybe Ethercat should put back the WTF button but charge $5 a pop to use it...

This is so utterly cool. I'd love to go to this and will try to arrange it.

Has anyone invited Piers Anthony to speak?

After all, he lives in or near Clearwater and was one of the key people who exposed the harassment of former Clearwater Mayor Gabe Cezares by the Cult of Scientology and is one of Scientology's earliest critics. He wrote me some half a dozen letters when I was in the SO and really helped break the brainwashing to get me out.

I think he'd like to see so much support in his city. He's elderly now and may not want to speak, but it would be nice if he were invited.

I think that's a great idea!

Hotel rooms in this area are amazingly low priced. I used the International Hotel Groups website to check rates. This group includes Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, and Candlewood Suites.

Rates range from around $70/night (weekend) at Candlewood Suites, Clearwater to about $200/night (weekend) at a Holiday Inn Resort (two pools, etc.) at Indian River. Rates for Holiday Inn or Holiday Inn Express look to run about $120-$130/night (weekend).

I have been to the Clearwater/St. Pete beach area. They both have beautiful beaches. And there are things like sightseeing boat cruises, Tarpon Springs, and other interesting areas nearby. The pier in downtown St. Petersburg is worth a trip. It had a nice restaurant overlooking the bay. There's a decent art museum located near the pier. And the (Salvadore) Dali Museum is not to be missed for art lovers.

Despite the presence of $cientology in Clearwater, it is actually a nice area to visit. And May is a good time of year. The weather is usually decent, especially in the later part of the month and schools are not out yet so not a lot of families vacationing.

I saw an Anon using this site, and it looked great. You can create your own shopping-for-swag page for free! Maybe Flag Down would want to use something like this for additional fund-raising: http://www.spreadshirt.com/

The Pier IS worth a trip, but unfortunately has been closed for business since May 31. :grouch:

The City of St Pete is going to knock it down and build something to replace in, but it will be years before it's done.

Here's a pic I took some years ago. It is from the pier at Clearwater Beach. There's lots of Pelicans there, and they'll pose for you. (especially if you've got food for them) :coolwink:

BnB also has reasonable rentals in Clearwater.. problem with renting in a private home..the residents might be Scilons. :)

Russell Miller is coming to America to take part in in Flag Down

From Tony Ortega: http://tonyortega.org/2014/04/05/jo...column-for-us-on-scientology-and-its-a-doozy/

Russell Miller is coming to America

By Tony Ortega

We were happy to see our New York Post story about Russell Miller’s Bare-Faced Messiah coming back in print metastasize all over the place. The Daily Mail rewrote it, and then the Telegraph did too (but called Russell ‘Robert’), and then those stories appeared in a number of far-flung imitators. We’re glad the book got that kind of notice. And we remind you, if you haven’t seen our interview with Russell, give it a look. He’s a great raconteur.

And now, Russell tells us that he is, indeed, coming to take part in Flag Down, a five-day event in Clearwater, Florida that will feature some dynamite speakers, including BBC journalist John Sweeney and ex-Scientologist Nancy Many. (The organizers were good enough to invite us, but we can’t make it.)

Flag Down will take place from May 5 to 10, and you can help make it happen by checking out its Indiegogo page.

Broward Palm Beach New Times: Anti-Scientology Conference in Clearwater May 5-11
http://blogs.browardpalmbeach.com/pulp/2014/04/huge_anti-scientology_conference_clearwater.php

Excerpt:
Griffths will be at the conference, which also features John Sweeney, a writer and broadcaster for the BBC. He made a documentary, 2007's Scientology and Me, and has also written seven books, including 2013's The Church of Fear: Inside the Weird World of Scientology.

A news release says, "Sweeney will be joined by a host of ex-members and critics from around the world, including fellow authors Russell Miller (1987's 'Bare-faced Messiah'), John Duignan (2008's 'The Complex'), Geir Isene (2013's 'Nineteen Eighty-Four') and Karen Pressley ('Escaping Scientology,' TBA). Five of the speakers announced so far are defectors from the Scientology organization's elite pseudo-paramilitary wing, the 'Sea Org.'"
There is a Scientology mission in Fort Lauderdale.
