"We of the church believe: That all men have inalienable rights to think freely, to talk freely, to write freely their own opinions and to counter or utter or write upon the opinions of others."

Bulls**t. It should read: We of the church believe that men who dare to criticize us should be ruined utterly.

Scientology: the cult of hate, hypocrisy and revenge.

Clearwater, Florida is home of the world spiritual headquarters of the Church of Scientology.

A movie theater in Clearwater, Florida — home of the world spiritual headquarters of the Church of Scientology — has dropped plans to play Alex Gibney's documentary Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief after being pressured by the church, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.

However, residents of Clearwater, including former members of the church, still will be able to see Gibney's Scientology movie when HBO Documentary Films re-releases it in theaters. The AMC Woodlands Square 20 in the neighboring town of Olsdmar, some 12 miles from Clearwater, has agreed to pick up the documentary and play it on behalf of HBO Films.

Going Clear was released in only a few theaters on March 13, 2015 before airing on HBO on March 29, scoring HBO's biggest premiere ever for a documentary. Gibney's film, based on Lawrence Wright's book of the same name, offers a damning view of Scientology, including the role such celebrities as Tom Cruise and John Travolta play in furthering the church's efforts. It won three Emmys last Saturday, including outstanding documentary film.

Cobb Countryside 12, which had planned to play the movie, informed HBO Documentary Films in recent days that it wouldn't play Going Clear after allegedly receiving threats from the church, according to sources. It's unclear what those threats were and to whom they were directed. HBO declined to comment and Cobb could not immediately be reached for comment. A representative of the Church of Scientology did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In most cases, major theater chains won't play a film that is available on other platforms. AMC has made exceptions for some specialty films, agreeing to rent, or "four wall," an auditorium. Sources say that is the case with Going Clear.

As awards season gears up, HBO Films is re-releasing Going Clear in roughly 20 theaters in select markets, beginning with New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco. Washington, Miami and other major cities on Sept. 25. On Oct. 2, it will book additional theaters in other markets, including AMC Woodlands Square.

... Meanwhile, at the Hall Of Doom.

Well, okay, slight exaggeration. Because we're talking about the Church Of Scientology. Specifically, how it's being said that they bullied a movie theater out of playing Alex Gibney's HBO documentary: "Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief."

Truth be told, the documentary pulled its punches considering the information that's already out there. But that doesn't seem to be enough for the Church, as they are apparently bent on making it more difficult to view the documentary for residents of Clearwater, Florida.

A report says:

"Cobb Countryside 12, which had planned to play the movie, informed HBO Documentary Films in recent days that it wouldn't play Going Clear after allegedly receiving threats from the church, according to sources. It's unclear what those threats were and to whom they were directed."

It's understandable that the theater would cave to pressure from the extremely litigious organization. Being sued isn't the worst that the Church can do, after all.

Wow! Maxine Page has clearly been paying attention. This list reads like something a veteran Scientology Ex could compose:

"I mean, for a supposed religious organization they sure rack up a shit ton of “unfounded” negative stories and allegations—ranging from waging hate campaigns against former members and those who dare to displease them in some way, shape or form; imprisoning people against their will; forcibly isolating mentally ill church members and preventing them from getting psychological treatment and medications; manipulation and brain washing; forcing church members to sever all contact with any family or friends who criticize the faith; misappropriating church member’s donations by using the money to provide special facilities and services to high profile celebrities; forcing low level church members to engage in physically taxing manual labour for ridiculously long hours with no financial compensation; using sensitive personal information gathered during “auditing” sessions to blackmail members who try to leave the church; medical neglect leading to the death of at least three patients in their Narcanon rehab centers; internet censorship and fraud; harassment, bullying and intimidation; sending anonymous smear letters to the families, friends and neighbors of journalists who write disparaging articles on Scientology; psychological manipulation of church members; phone tapping and spying; making false accusations to the FBI of criminal acts supposedly committed by church detractors; stealing medical records; plotting to get Scientology dissenters sectioned in mental hospitals or incarcerated in jail; wire tapping, infiltration and theft of government documents and filing multitudes of spurious lawsuits against detractors with the aim of financially ruining and wearing them down."

There is a lovely theater in downtown St. Petersburg. It's not that far from the St. Pete home of the CoS (which is also near a strip club, as an aside).

I wonder if there are plans to show it elsewhere in Pinellas County.

Is that in Pinellas County?

Reps for Scientology call the alleged threats a cry for attention:

Scientology spokeswoman Karin Pouw said that this was “just another of Gibney’s publicity stunts to go along with all of the other phony ‘threats’ he has manufactured to get attention. It is pure fiction just like his film...”

Anyone in Clearwater who wants to see this fiction film can catch the re-release on October 2 in the next town over, at AMC Woodlands Square Oldsmar.

Now the 2nd Clearwater Theatre is muscled into dropping "Going Clear"

Quote
A second Florida theater near the world spiritual headquarters of the Church of Scientology has scrubbed plans to play Alex Gibney's controversial documentary Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief.

AMC Woodlands Square 20 in Olsdmar, Fla., has told HBO it will no longer be screening film due to "space" reasons. Last week, the AMC multiplex agreed to rent HBO Films the use of an auditorium beginning on Oct. 2 after a nearby cinema in Clearwater, the Cobb Countryside 12, dropped the film. The Cobb Countryside 12's owner had told HBO it backed off screening the movie after receiving pressure from the church. Woodlands Square is a short 10 minute drive or so from the Cobb Countryside.
