SNIPS:

Cult or religion — what distinguishes one from the other?

Within a healthy religious environment, family bonds are encouraged by the leader, and the questioning of beliefs and doctrines is accepted. The leader lives in a similar manner to the followers. People are offered all the information necessary to make an educated decision about joining the church, and they can then choose the amount of involvement that feels right to them.

On several websites that list the “top 10 cults,” Scientology ranks between 6th and 10th, right alongside the Order of the Solar Temple, Hare Krishna, and even the “Manson Family.” Most cults expect a large amount of time and money from followers.

This Friday, February 15, 2013, Scientology will be under a microscope as the God Discussion radio show, hosted by Deborah Beeksma, examines some dangerous Scientology core doctrines concerning psychiatry and prescribed medications. Many of these medicines help patients cope and function in society, making their environment more safe and secure.

This 2.5 hour live broadcast will also focus on the death of Victoria Britton’s son Kyle, “who was denied his anti-depressant medication because of his father’s religious beliefs, and was found at his father’s apartment, shot in the head with his father’s .357 Magnum.”

That is about the furthest thing from Scientology.

Scientology doesn't care at all about "family". Hubbard makes it abundantly clear in MANY policies that the goals of the group (Scientology) take a FAR front-seat to any 2nd dynamic concerns. Family matters are ALWAYS pushed aside in favor of time and money to the Church of Scientology. Families ALWAYS suffer for any person who is active and enthusiastically "gung-ho".

Not only that, but Scientology frequently declares ex-members as suppressive persons, and forces all extant members to DISCONNECT from these declared folks. Often, family members are forced to cease communication with other family members. This is a very common practice in Scientology, even though Church spoke-assholes (PR folks) flat-out LIE and claim that no such things happen.

There is ZERO TOLERANCE for questioning of beliefs and doctrines in Scientology. The doctrines of Scientology itself forbid any such questioning. People are heavily discouraged from looking elsewhere, from questioning, and especially from looking at any aspect of Scientology with a critical and curious mind.

The leader of Scientology (Miscavige) sure does NOT live in a similar manner to the rest of the staff.

The concept of an "educated decision" does not exist in Scientology. The ONLY view is that any person should and must simply study, duplicate, understand and agree with every word spoken or written by Hubbard. To fail or refuse to do that will ONLY get you sent for correction in Qual or Ethics. Those who doggedly refuse to adapt and AGREE fully find themselves declared PTS or as SPs. There is no middle-ground. It is Hubbard's way or it is the highway. I have actually seen videos of top Church members saying exactly THAT - they don't even hide it. :duh:

And, there is no "choosing the amount of time and involvement that feels right for you". The ONLY acceptable viewpoint is to donate ALL of your time, money and energy to "salvaging this degraded sector NOW". THAT is the only acceptable attitude based on Hubbard's many policies and issues on Hard Sell.

Scientology is both extreme and fanatical as a subject and as far as the official Scientology organization is concerned.
