I did some proofreading in LA too for the Tapes to Books project (R&D vols). This was in 1986/7. Paid $6 or $10 an hour or something. Very few SO members doing it as they didn't have a lot of spare time! I did it in mealtimes etc. SO members doing it got stopped after a few weeks, but it was nice while it lasted.
I had a great earlier similar at SH. This was just after the Happiness Rundown was released. Thelma Cusworth audited me on it around December (1981?). In January I decided to go to California in the summer and visit my daughter, then aged 6. I had never seen her. I had no money, and SO pay probably averaged about £5 a month. Anyway, I was going to make it go right.
There was a GO Audit Project ongoing and they employed Scientologists. They were happy to have me, and they paid me the standard £1 an hour. I worked there for 4 1/2 months in my mealtimes, after post, and also study time. I told everyone, including the Ethics Officer, that I was going to visit my daughter in California and needed the money. Amazingly, I got not one iota of counter-intention from anyone, not even a frown.
This was also the year those passports came out, and I made a bunch of money in book commissions selling those. Note that I had never sold any books prior to this year.
I figured I would need about £800 for the fares and living expenses etc. The GO Audits Project ground to a halt, but not before I had made enough money. I left on schedule and had a month's glorious holiday in California.
I figured it didn't cost me a penny, because I didn't have any money before I started the cycle and I didn't have any afterwards, but if I hadn't decided to go I wouldn't have created the money anyway.
