Thanks to all the answers to my question about the art on the wall behind the Miscavige family. Sorry for the derail from the main theme of the thread. Here's a small photo of Frazetta with the painting and obituary:

"Artist Frank Frazetta, 82, died May 10, 2010 of a stroke in a hospital near Boca Grande FL. Frazetta is best known for his iconic illustrations for the works of Robert E. Howard — especially Conan the Barbarian — and Edgar Rice Burroughs, and was a towering figure in the SF/fantasy art field.

Born February 9, 1928 in Brooklyn, Frazetta studied at the Brooklyn Academy of Fine Arts from ages eight to 16, and began working as a professional pulp and comic illustrator as a teenager. His early work included funny animal comics, Flash Gordon, Johnny Comet, Thun’da, Buck Rogers,EC horror comics, and even a long stint ghost-drawing the Li’l Abner comic strip.
In the ’60s he began painting book covers, and soon became hugely popular among fans.

He was nominated for his first Hugo Award in 1963, winning a Hugo in 1966. Other honors include a World Fantasy Award in 1976 and a World Fantasy life achievement award in 2001; Chesley Awards in 1988, 1995, and 1997; a Spectrum Grandmaster Award in 1995; and a Hubbard lifetime achievement award in 1997.

In 2008, one of his Burroughs illustrations sold for over a quarter of a million dollars at auction, and in 2009, his “Conan the Conqueror” painting sold to a private collector for $1 million. In addition to cover art, he did work for magazines, animated movies, calendars, and album covers, along with numerous fine art exhibitions.Frazetta suffered a series of strokes in the 2000s, hampering his ability to paint. He was predeceased by his wife Ellie (married 1956, died 2009), and is survived by four children and several grandchildren."

I don't see a problem with most derails. I rather enjoy when on this board a discussion about one one subject leads to discussions on several or many different subjects.

I have enjoyed learning about this artist. I recognized his style but knew nothing about him until now. So I thank you for that. There's nothing wrong with bringing a little more knowledge to others.

Harsh ? Nasty language ? All that, yep. Yet it is true. A lesson it took me too long to learn. but, my children learned it early on.

While I'm putting in my unasked for 2 cents, I constantly work on this one;
" Mind your own business "!
This is a discussion board so your two cents worth IS asked for. I, for one, am grateful for your opinions as well as all other's. I say Let 'er Rip.

His eyes still look like there's a conscience free, airhead behind them.

I agree. When I first looked at that photo I noticed his eyes. The man on the right in the plaid shirt has the exact same weird stare. The children have a strange look in their eyes as well. I don't know if it's terror or if their thoughts are along the lines of: "Ugh! Get this over with so I can go to my room and play."

The man on the right is David's older brother, Ron Jr. The little girl with him looks like Jenna Miscavige Hill, his daughter. She looks about 3 years old in that photo and is 32 now.

DM was already a VERY BAD DUDE at the time of this family photo - probably in the home of Ronnie or the home of Denise on Bear Hill Road in Chichester, New Hampshire while both worked at Real World Software. So did Loretta by the way.

DM went there on vacation several time in the '80s.

DM was (is?) a big gun nut in those days - and hours were spent at the range. Real World execs would strive to out-do each other (to impress DM?) with their semi-auto (auto?) rifles and elephant guns and the like. AND their "art" prints AND their Limited edition Leather-bounds and the like.

Later, a completely un-necessary sale of Real World happened with many millions going to fund IAS and the Freewinds renovations.

The company was very successful and could easily have grown enormously, but instead got cashed out so the beast could be fed.

Sad.

And I think ASI selling that stuff does, in fact, qualify as SOFT PORN.

Why ? Look at the tight views the cult has on sex - like sex & pain. Or masturbation is an overt. Or no sex unless married. All that kind of POLICY.

Then sell pictures of buff men & big tits women ? Your are kidding me right ?

Yes, museums have long had nudes in paintings & statues by acknowledged great masters & have no ridge on the wrongness of humans.

How can you compare great works of art in the great museums to a money grubbing cult that shows some tits to sell their soft porn ?

PS : Who is your " Founding Forefather " ? I'm really curious !

Sorry for delay but wanted to answer up here. In answer to your bolded question Giz: Unfortunately I think I didn't really explain myself in full. I'm NOT comparing these things. Yet I do realize, and have lived with (being an artist myself) this very fine line between 'illustrations' vs 'fine Art'. It's just my personal opinion that it's such a subjective topic that it's mostly impossible to discuss without going into a novel. And those don't work either as it seems an endless discussion...

I'm just quite passionate about the works of some folks who have battled this fine line to get some exposure...and I do very much believe some illustrative work, totally qualifies as Fine Art. Completely apart from anything Scn.

But I think the main thing here is that just because something crosses paths with Scn doesn't necessarily condemn it to anything less than what it is. I know Frazetta was not a Scn (thank god) but ol' hubttard did like his work and has stated knowing the guy. Now, this could be about as true as LRtard 'knowing' Crowley...which he did not in fact. He just read his stuff and really everything was through Parsons, bla, bla. But I was strictly talking about Art as a subject completely apart from Scn.

I guess I can get rattled sometimes by folks who treat anything that has crossed paths with Scn, as inferior, infected or whatever you may call it. Although in some cases it has indeed.

The founding forefather in this case, as I mentioned is Frazetta...he is the one who really did start that whole style, and I think its just a matter of giving him credit - I also know that his work is in museums. Just like most folks, they had their gifts, talents, whatever well before Scn ever became something (or not) on their radar -that is almost always then credited to Scn having given them 'the gift'. Utter BS!!

I'm just glad Frazetta never got into Scn. And I'm mostly unsure of his relation with Hubtard...as most everybody of notoriety ever mentioned by Hubtard.

Ah, it's late - hope I made some sense. Happy to continue with when I'm abit more conscious!

And suppose I should apologize for derail here.

Nitey Folks.

I've enjoyed learning about Frank Frazetta and his art the last few days.

For Mother's Day:

This is Ellie and Frank, they were married and remained together from 1956 until she died in 2009.

"Eleanor Kelly was born in Massachusetts and moved to New York where she married Frank in November, 1956. She acted as his business partner as well as his lifelong companion. Known for her feisty personality as well as her intuitive business acumen, she was instrumental in successfully establishing record prices for Frank’s work throughout her life."

They had 4 children. I think she was the model/inspiration for the women in his art. When a critic said he exaggerated human features in his art, Frank said he drew people the way he saw them. Maybe he saw his wife with very large breasts:

A painting by Frank of Ellie:
wizje6n.jpg

"By the mid-1970s, Frazetta became a nationally recognized name in the burgeoning field of fantasy art, due in large part to wife Ellie’s business sense. An attractive, strong-willed and savvy woman whom Frank has referred to as his “right arm” (and who modelled for much of his art), she embarked on a quest to retrieve as many of her husband’s original paintings (and the reproduction rights thereof) as possible. She then began selling poster prints of Frank’s paintings for four dollars, originally using her laundry room as an office and shipping department. Her acumen was responsible for also getting the rights to Frazetta’s most famous Conan cover images, as long as the character’s name was not used (instead being labelled as simply “The Barbarian.”) Ads for the posters appeared in many publications and the business flourished, eventually taking over much of their home. This coincided with a series of trade paperbacks on the artist’s work from renowned editor Betty Ballantine, and branched into equally popular calendars beginning in 1977 as well as several limited edition signed prints and portfolios. (These include “Lord of the Rings”, “Women of the Ages” and “Bran Mak Morn”, another REH character.)"

Here's a little about Frank's grandmother:

"Frazetta was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. He was raised largely by his grandmother.
“When I drew something, she would be the one to say it was wonderful and would give me a penny to keep going,” Frazetta recalled. “Sometimes I had nothing left to draw on but toilet paper. As I got older, I started drawing some pretty wild things for my age. I remember the teachers were always mesmerized by what I was doing, so it was hard to learn anything from them. So I went to art school when I was a little kid, and even there the teachers were flipping out.”

This type of nudity or near nudity art goes back to at least as early as 1974 in their printed promo. I wonder if anyone has any of that promo laying around or archived. It was the era of the battle of america, or was it the Clear America campaign promo. Probably the latter. I know 'cause I had some of it in my hands and wondered about the social acceptability of it. Miscavige age 13 / 14 at the time busy slapping PCs if I recall correctly of what I have read.

I wonder when that photo was taken. It would be a great companion to go along with Tony Ortega's articles regarding any of the Miscavige clan of which he has done a fair number. I would notify him, if my computer wasn't crawling along so slowly.

Slight derail here-DM looks almost normal in this pic. Healthy, relaxed, no monkey suit or stick up his butt.

NOt sure but I think those selling prices are close or less than the ASI original prices. Again they was a price list with the images printed on them. Some 'investment'!

You're right, it might be even more desirable. From just a purely investment/financial perspective I can't imagine a much better property investment, the possible one million you mentioned is a very modest price for that area. Most homes near Mt. Tamalpais are in the five million dollar range.

(Checking Ebay for the CoS/Author Services Frazetta lithos, while you may see hopeful listings asking for a few thousand, if you actually check "sold" listings you will find the lithos when they actually sell go for about $250 - $300 tops. Small original sketches by Franzetta sell for far more than the glossy lithos.)

The little girl with Ron Jr, the man in the red plaid shirt looks like his daughter, Jenna Miscavige Hill. She looks about 3 years old, she is 32 now.

PS I'm sure Tony has seen this photo, I think it's in Ron Miscavige's book.

Since God made woman in her image who can argue with you. And since she gave man 2 eyes and two heads those also should be respected for being used. Now if the plaque on the kitchen wall of the home I grew up in has anything truth to it, I will surely make those 800 year olds of Genesis look young....it said a man never gets old until he stops looking. And if God wants a house or a mansion even to remortgage , .....gotta love Percy Sledge...'When a man loves a woman'

I think that most of them look really weird with forced expressions. The kids too young to care look fine, but the rest just look strange, even the Dwarf. Look at the intimacy between him and his wife: totally absent. She might as well have her arm around a piece of furniture.

More likely is that IF healthy young women were not fascinated by the bodies of healthy, physically fit young men, the human race would have died out long ago.

Most gals have decided whether or not they are going to bed with us LONG before we even thought about it. We are slow. They are quick.

Let's face it, when it comes to most things, the ladies are so far ahead of us guys. They just are.
