Paul, thank you for your, as usual, well considered advice and take on the situation. I hope to phone St Hill today, and will let you all know how I get on. Courage please!! Keep your cool, Gail, and get the desired result!

Can anyone tell me what the books and lectures (in CD form) are worth? What does it cost to buy them at present?

Do not forget, it is YOUR money they have been using interest free, and YOU are the one who is being inconvenienced not them. Don't allow them to start asking bullshit questions, just tell them what you want, if they reply with a question, tell them you did not contact them to answer their questions, you contacted them to return the merchandise you did not order and to get your money back. You are not obligated to be polite to them, they are trying to jerk you around and screw you. Stay Strong and don't give them an inch.

The whole package is about $4,000 US.

But don't panic and don't jeopardize the stock, even though you didn't order those books it may be wise to have them to ensure the return of your money.

I wouldn't panic either, just apply all the pressure you can to have it rectified and your money repatriated to you.

1) get a letter form a lawyer. If you have pre paid legal service this will be free
In the letter tell them you sill sue them and the book store officer personally.

2) tell them you need to see IN WRITING PROOF THAT YOU SENT FOR THESE BOOKS. i am assuming there is none.

2) make a video explaining what happenebd PUT IT ON YOU TUBE then send the LINK to St Hill and OSA and anyone it can embarras.

Get on every socal networking site and tell your stoy and keep sending the links to St Hill.

send letters to St. Hill Newpapers
Send article to E Zine magazine
send articles to YELP

They hate bad PR

I'm trying the softly softly approach, to begin with at least. I want to get the sweet bookstore officer on my side and doing her best to help me. I have rung through a few times, but she is not answering her phone. Have left a message to call me, but I will keep trying too. Receptionist told me there is an event going on at St Hill (maybe the big one with DM in attendance, patron's ball etc), and that I will find the bookstore officer on post at 1pm tomorrow, which is 1am tonight NZ time. Hope I can stay awake and alert until then.

Thank you one and all for your advice. It has been very interesting and helpful, but Paul's has been the most apt for the situation. He knows the mindset and culture of St Hill. Sure, the CoS responds to legal threats and threats of bad PR (and it may come to that), and shouting and suing is the American way, quite the norm in that part of the world, but I am dealing with the British culture here, so I shall try this approach first. From my experience, St Hill staff are quite gentle and almost reasonable. Will keep you informed.

I'm sure the sweet bookstore officer as a person would love to help you, but unfortunately as a Scientology staffer we all know doing the right thing is against Hubbard's policies. You need to do what you feel is best, but I wouldn't allow them to even remotely entertain the idea that giving you your money back is optional, or that they will be the ones dictating the terms.

^^^^ Wot he said.

The sweet bookstore officer will not be able/allowed to make such a decision anyway ... it will need to go via endless other 'comm lines' ...

I wouldn't ring in a fit, everything in writing is the only way I would do this (and with email it is fast).

Good luck though, I really hope you get it sorted out.

If the org or any business sent me goods instead of a refund I'd get on to the trading standards agency for advice.

IMHO to ring a phone doesn't protect you. Send your complain in writing ASAP, with registered mail and return receipt, then you can phone.

.....I'd give Consumer Affairs a ring and see what they say. You should not have to pay for their return I don't think.

This is a good idea.

Another is to give them legal notice. CoS does not like to be sued. Have a solicitor write a demand letter on your request. Suing them for your money and for fraud, perhaps small claims court, might not be costly or time consuming depending upon the dollar amount you are trying to get back.

Best wishes,
Mary
