Hubbard seemed to have method in his madness. You should see some of the crap I came up with in auditing, all of it bullshit but flavoured by books, sci fi films, Lord of the Rings and the Bhagavad gita. Nothing I saw in auditing was beyond my ability to understand, but some of it did give me the creeps.
Hubbard believed that we were once gods and are now trapped inside meat bodies and that was intolerable. We got here because we were bored, eternity is a long time and we needed a game big enough to overwhelm us or at least take a very long time to solve, something nearly impossible, and that's why we're here deep inside the coal mine with the shutters giving way. All the exits are booby trapped. So any sign saying 'FIRE EXIT THIS WAY' has to be avoided. The way out should appear like a shoot to hell, not a lift. OK so that's the basic idea of where he was at before OT3.
So he would allow his mind to wander in free association and anything that seemed too ridiculous he'd look at in greater depth, anything that seemed likely he'd ignore. He probably felt that the drugs helped to free his mind. I think he really believed that only he had the amazing personality traits needed to do the job, he knew that the rest of us were way too weak and stupid, he would save mankind and all the other planets. Then he got caught in the BT trap and that lead down into the bowls of the mine, and he's still there, and dead and his bridge unfinished. In his own terms we are as trapped as we were in 1948, his mission failed.
