first time I ever swallowd the contents of a benzedrex inhaler was at the London Planetarium.

awesome experience - mind you I pissed off a lot of people because I would not shut up :happydance:

Sounds like the first (and only) time I tried pure clinical adrenaline, holy fuckin' see-the-wirld-motor-mouth, I don't wonder at all why ol' Tub's like the fast lane... trouble was... nobody ever gets to change their tires cause you are going too fast, and he did, and he is dead, and it could have been a better planet... 'cept fer Dave...

Yeah, thats a thing nobody talks about and an area in which the guy restained himself, never heard any story about hubbard banging young scientologist, unlike other cult leaders that were all about it, like Jones and Manson.

In the 50's, Benzedrine was 'the Bomb'. Man, you could run those Dianetic incidents, no prollem.
We would roll the blotter strips up from the Inhalers into empty capsules so that we could swallow the bitter tasting things. A short while later, we could get the tablets. Benzedrine was much stronger than the Dexedrine tabs. At least for me.
Doing Benzedrine and smoking weed were pretty common activities among certain early 'parishioners'. Others were into Psychedelics, such as Peyote buttons.
There was Cocaine as well as various substances resembling LSD in psychedelic effect, and various hallucinogens.
Amyl Nitrate didn't hit my Radar until the late 60's, when Sam Peckinpah introduced me to the " Amies" inhalers. A short Psychedelic trip with sexual side effects, as I recall. Trip lasted only minutes.
LSD would satisfy a person's desire to "connect with the Divine". It is advisable not to drop Acid unless you have no time commitments for 12/24 hours, and you are not already fooked up in the head.
Cocaine is super if you want to feel super. Mentally sharp, and wide awake. ( Also addictive).
All these drugs have been used by ppl for decades.
Scientology is just another fooking drug.

I get the feeling that drug use was no more widespread in the 60s than the 50s, it's just that people were more open about it.

And, uh, what about the digestive effects of those blotters? It .... uhhhhh .... had to come out somehow, right? I mean, I assume the blotter were cellulose-based and indigestible. Were they so small you didn't notice?

well I think you are correct - cocaine for example was very popular in late victorian times - Sherlock Holmes was a fan... There are a couple of Holmes stories that either mention or involve drug use and from the writing it is obvious that this was a common thing.

During WWII the use of amphetamines skyrocketed and after the war especially in the 50's I don't think it was even illegal - at least in England (a bit before my time)

Cocaine and opium for Holmes.

My wife's great great grandfather had a license to smoke opium from the Qing Dynasty in the 1880s. I think the Japanese stomped on that in 1895, as they stomped on the footbinding of her great grandmother.

Bennies and Dexies were not illegal in the early 50's.
Drug use was (and is) such a common thing that when I first mentioned LRH's drug use, I didn't give it a second thought. It never occurred to me that there was anything 'wrong' with it.
My friends and colleagues were all Jazz musicians, so it might sound wack to y'all, but I thought that everyone toked up. Every one that I knew did.
Later in the subject, @ 1966 or so, when I met Alan Walter and joined his Staff,I discovered that the use of weed was a 'no no'. I compromised by never routing in for a scn course or auditing 'out of time limits'. I didn't 'do' drugs when I was 'doing' Scn. I figgered what I did on my own time was my own business.
This is why, after 33 years in and out, doing literally all of their 'Bridge', I never became a "true believer". Scn was 'just another practice' to me.:clap:

This is true, in those days drugs were not satanized cuz nobody really knew much about them, and they were fun, so why not, its like in the future someone come up with a study that the internet is bad for you, and nobody told us that to us so we use it now. And our kids will have to buy overpriced internet from doubtful providers and they will hide from us to get online. Lol
