You can't defend it, because its indefensible ... even if it were true that the breast milk of some mothers was not nutritionally sufficient the bonding experience (while feeding a newborn) is still ideally done without the use of a bottle and formula, that isn't always possible but that's another issue and isn't the reason hubbard trashed breastfeeding and replaced it (or tried to) with sugary rubbish that anyone could slurp into the poor baby ... while the Mother got her arse back on post ASAP and saved the planet.

I finally caught up with this thread (I am busy sometimes...)

I am now wondering if it would be possible to make now a fair judgement whether or not Hubbard was guilty of child abuse?

Specifically there are three areas of alleged / possible child abuses which we were looking here more or less in detail.

First, abuse towards his own children?

Secondly, was there abuse in locking children into chain lockers? If yes, what would have been the "correct" treatment of an offending child (if there ever was one).

And finally, thirdly which has been overlooked a bit, a possible abuse resulting from using children a "messengers". Is it damaging to the developing mind having to exactly replicate the mood of Hubbard (or any person for that matter) and having a child deliver the "whole experience" to the recipient?

What does venerable judge Commander Birdsong think? Do we have already enough evidence to proceed to a judgement in these points?

The massive, and frantic, paper shredding that occurred in the late 1970s was to hide evidence of Hubbard's control.

Re. Sara: Hubbard was obsessed with Sara, and subsequently with Paulette Cooper. It's too late to claim that Hubbard "didn't know."

One little item re. Sara, which was omitted.


In the chapter 'Launching the Sea Org', in the book 'Bare-Faced Messiah', Virginia Downsborough was interviewed, by author Russell Miller, about her time in Las Palmas with L. Ron Hubbard (late 1966).

Downsborough was surprised by the large number of bottles of pills that were around Hubbard's bed where he lay moping. She did not report any physical injury. Here's an excerpt:

"He talked a lot about Sara Northrup and seemed to want to make sure that I knew that he had never married her. I didn't know why it was so important to him; I'd never met Sara and couldn't care less, but he wanted to persuade me that the marriage had never taken place. When he talked about his first wife, the picture he put out was of this poor wounded fellow coming home from the war and being abandoned by his wife and family because he would be a drain on them. You were not a witness to his "good" side any more than his true "bad" side.
