My next Q is this....Is there some way to keep Private Messages somewhere that they will not fill up the Inbox and have to be erased?

Single messages can be saved by copying the text from the screen, but that way the formattings and smilies will get lost.
To save one message/posting with its codes, click on "reply with quote", and copy what is in there.
It is better to use the "text editor" for this than "word" or alike, because it doesn't accept any formattings, thus, it adds no new ones...

Otherwise, I know only this...
At the very bottom of the site that shows the inbox, or sended items, there is a box that reads the following:

Download all Private Messages as:
XML CSV Text

The mods recommended to delete at last all those messages soon that happen to contain information that could come in handy for OSA, like chats that include informations about locations or jobs, such things - so that if the server ever gets hacked, this information isn't there anymore.
Try all three formats and re-open them on your computer and decide which one you like - it is a salad in all cases, but the smilies are there, as "BB" code... :melodramatic:

And when you insert some of these texts, saved manually or by the forum button, in a text field like this, you'll see it again with the smilies and formattings!

Note: it is helpful to switch from formatted mode to "plain text" mode from time to time and look up how all the short codes look like - and what actually happens to be inserted when you click "bold", and so on. That's how I am memorizing them...

Well, and postings with many links and pics I'll continue to write in "plain text" from now - in the other version the cursor is jumping around and all that... this is unnerving.

Simply press the Text link as shown below, which saves all your messages
as a text file that can be opened in Word, Notepad or other word processor.

Save, confirm you can open the file, then you can delete all your PMs.

I suggest people do this as not to keep any IRL information about members
in PMs, which could conceivably be hacked and downloaded by nefarious agents
of a certain so-called religious order.

Could happen. Seen more guarded and secured databases hacked recently,
like Chase Bank.

Look for this on your PM page.

Personally, I don't keep or store any PMs with any identifying IRL information ever.
If need, I simply store them on my machine as text files.

But I'm the high paranoid type. :whistling: :wink2:

BUT!
:hysterical:
I had already written my posting, THEN I looked at your posting, which had appeared meanwhile, decided I should include this information - inclusive mentioning that the smilies will vanish if one copies it from the screen (and I hate this)! So I edited my posting... :melodramatic:
THEN you deleted YOUR's...

And THEN this punk did "it" to ME... somewhat...

Thanks I was a trekkie for 10 years, otherwise I wouldn't be able to look through all these hyperspace distortions! :coolwink:

PS: I wasn't all too concerned about OSA, actually when I saved my messages first this was when I thought I could get banned for my next posting. Theoretically. Theoretically one, too, should consider this possibility of losing their stuff... I will...

Exactly the question I myself asked in post #19 of this thread. I don't know if I've been awake long enough yet today to get my head around Jump's method above, but I think I got the jist of it, tried what I thought he was getting at and, f**k me, it worked, so it's goodbye to thumbnails forevvah!

Thanks for that Jump!

Well, I can see an image here, (immediately above) but apparently nobody else can. It's an image I have on my HDD, and if I want to post it in the 'regular' way, it only shows up as a thumbnail. Needs a bit more work...

Oh! Here we go!

Another just to make sure...

Yup! That's cracked it. (Thanks to L4 for his help.)

 Right now, I see just thumbnails and ... nothingness. :omg:
Really ec? You see thumbnails? I see 2 full-size images. At least you see something, so it's an improvement on the quoted post where I'm told you see nothing at all but I see a full-size image. I followed Jump's instructions to the letter as well. Doh!

Thanks fer letting me know.

Yes, all thumbnails!
What is with other people? Do they see thumbnails, or pictures?
But that indeed means the codes are correct, and just the files are not available... or the link itself is wrong?

I just had to change multiple pics in another thread from mere links to linked attachments, as long as I can still edit the postings, because one pic had been already removed (and all the chocolate pics together are telling a story, kinda), and another one, the fourfold with the parrot, kept not showing up for an unknown reason most of the times, despite its code and link was still there and the link was good, and, when edited, reloaded etc., it would show up... one time... :nervous:

What are the URLs of these pics in your posting? Are they on ESMB, photobucket, etc? Maybe sometimes a "forbidden" link is the problem, you know that they want you to open the site and not just the link?
On the other hand, it is perfectly possible that this is because of my browser, or the Add-Ons,... I have no clue.

There are some other funny things happening to links, too. In the "horsemen" thread, I also had to attach the Australia firestorm photo, because after some hours suddenly something called a hotlink defense orso (I really don't remember) had been fired up on their website, with the result that the pic here was almost completely blackened out, along with a "friendly" message.
Mysteries of the web! :melodramatic:

I was planning to post a "sequel" on posting pics anyhow, and especially on how to grab an Url. When you can't open a site that shows the picture alone, so that you can get an URL that ends with the pics name and "jpg" extension, and instead have, say, a funpic website or forum there where it is all in one piece (but they happen to allow that sort of linking), then I open the source code (every browser should do that), and look in the salad for a proper Url. I mean, one ending on "/thumbnail.jpg" wouldn't be the proper one, nor "/icon.jpg", but probably "/squirrel123.jpg". I can't read anything of that html, but I know how an Url looks like. :p Also, first I would click on "saving picture", which I would not do, but get to know the file name, which can be looked up with the "search" function in the html code then.
Also, you can often strip away parts of an Url and it will still work. I don't know what it all means, aside from that some of it is, so to say, the "markers" of the conducted search, but it works like that with Amazon links. When searching a book on amazon and wanting to link that book, these results are very long, but they can be shortened, so that it really is just the link to the amazon site plus one long product number, but not "?/..." and whatnot. I just tried that out.
I think all that could be of some help for posting. More to come...

Thanks for that Jump!

When I get the tiny box with the red X in it, how do I then get the pic? I have right clicked on "open Picture", but nothig happens, even if I go back and click on the box again.

These should be Strativarius' three pics, they're exscn attachments, right? I took that from a look at the source code. But they do not show up as pics for me. Do they for YOU, Strativarius???
I wrote it each one time with "IMG" tags, one time without but with some stray spaces, so that you can compare the names:

This is the funpic from Armstrong that I have used on the page before - and so far, that still works - right?

The box with an 'x' in it means there is an error and something that should be there ain't available. No amount of clicking on it will change that.

No, the placeholder means the picture is nor really "available" and something is fooked up, somewhere. :melodramatic:
I have, too, klicked on "open picture", that does nothing.

Edit: No edit wars again!!!!!

1) Phenomanon, and others: do you see Strativarius' pics in his posting, and/or in mine, where I copied them?

2) Strativarius: are this your numbers, have I picked the right ones? Are you seeing your pictures in my posting?
