TMZ is keeping up really well...
Katie was wearing her wedding ring and playing Stepford Wife as recently as last week. Then in rapid succession, she fired her TC-sanctioned security detail, hired all new staff, put her apartment building management on notice to keep out TC and any unknown people, and filed for divorce.
Not only does she seem to know what she is dealing with, she could be The ONE.
I hereby nominate Katie Holmes as The Mockingjay.
I was thinking about this today. Either she is the luckiest person alive, or this was really well planned in advance.
I think it's the latter.
Over the last year at least, the paps have taken almost daily pictures of her walking around New York; always with her daughter. This establishes three things. 1) She's living in NY 2) She's parenting her child 3) Tom is never around.
Communication to the public: She's the downtrodden wife of an absentee father and husband, trying valiantly to raise her little girl alone.
She looks sad and depressed in so many of those pictures. No makeup, sloppy clothes, bad hair. The last two days? She looks radiant. Message? Suppression has been lifted. (Any woman who has been in a bad marriage can relate to that.)
She files for divorce out of the blue. Cruise is on the other side of the world making a movie. He can't leave; if he does that it fucks up the schedule and the studio loses money. They are already worried about losing money ANYWAY, because...
Katie's story - and ONLY Katie's story - is all over the press. EVERYWHERE. People. US. TMZ. On and on and on. Every news story: She is singlehandedly taking on the entire cult and the entire Cruise machine to save her daughter. She's well on her way to sainthood.
Not only is she the the poster child for anyone anywhere who has stood up against Scientology, she's an inspiration for women everywhere who have been under the thumb of a Control Freak. My guess is that we're going to start hearing more about what a nutjob he was to live with, and women
everywhere will be on her side.
Meanwhile, Team Cruise hasn't had the time to scramble for a defense. By the time they get out there before the public, the damage has already been done. The world hates him. WOMEN especially, who are the ones that Hollywood care about, hate him.
You gotta love it. Some people compare her to Diana. The royal family thought she would be sweet and passive and quiet and not rock the boat. Charles could do whatever he wanted to do while she dutifully popped out heirs.
Look how that worked out.
It reminds me, for some bizzare reason, of the name of a feminist newspaper that was around when I was in college.
