An explosive exposé of the cult of Scientology revealed through the eyes of a high profile former member.

Synopsis

When Academy Award winning writer and director Paul Haggis (Million Dollar Baby, Crash) left the Church of Scientology after three decades of loyal service, the organisation suffered a crushing blow. Alongside Tom Cruise and John Travolta, Haggis was one of the church’s Hollywood trophies. But Haggis’ personal investigation of the church to which he had pledged his faith uncovered a litany of horrors, including physical abuse, forced abortions, slavery and imprisonment of its members. With his belief shattered, Haggis resigned from Scientology and here – for the first time – he speaks out about his experiences.

Prisoners of Faith explores the roots of Scientology, from the life of its eccentric founder, L. Ron Hubbard, to the practices of its current leader David Miscavige. Encompassing flashes of brilliance and insanity, we discover the appeal of Scientology through Haggis’ eyes, especially to talented and ambitious members of the entertainment industry. This is the most profound reckoning to date with the powerful and secretive organisation that dominates celebrity headlines. It is also a moving human story of the lure of extreme faith and the price of leaving it.

The year 2012 started off very badly for the cult. Seems that 2013 may not be so good either.:biggrin:.......

And the Eye of Sauron turns towards New York as it sends out its legal riders.

Unless I misunderstand, I believe that means there are three more books due to be published in the first couple of months of 2013: Larry Wright's, Jenna Miscavige Hill's and Mark Headly #2.

Oh my!

More here:
Random House
"Based on more than two hundred personal interviews with both current and former Scientologists—both famous and less well known—and years of archival research . . ."

"At the book’s center, two men whom Wright brings vividly to life, showing how they have made Scientology what it is today: The darkly brilliant science-fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard, whose restless, expansive mind invented a new religion. And his successor, David Miscavige—tough and driven, with the unenviable task of preserving the church after the death of Hubbard."

If this trend continues, how long will it be before there are more books that are critical of L Ron Hubbard and his creepy Scientology cult, than books praising L Ron Hubbard? (Mostly written by L Ron Hubbard, of course...)

Not long at all! What an interesting state of affairs.

L Ron Hubbard proves that one sure-fire way to "smash your name into history"... is to crash and burn spectacularly.

That's more Kryptonite for Scientology.

There's never been a better time to leave the Cult.

A quote from the press release at the above link:

GOING CLEAR: Scientology, Hollywood, and the Prison of Belief is based on more than two hundred interviews with current and former Scientologists, as well as other sources. The book offers an exhaustive account of the church, from its founding by L. Ron Hubbard to its present-day leadership under David Miscavige.

“Scientology plays an outsize role in the cast of new religions that have arisen in the twentieth century,” Wright observes. “I was drawn to write this book by the questions many people have about Scientology: What is it that makes this religion alluring? What do its adherents get out of it? How can rational-seeming people subscribe to beliefs that others find incomprehensible? Why do popular personalities associate themselves with a faith that is likely to create public relations martyrdom?”

During his three-year investigation, Wright was not only able to convince former members to discuss their separation from the church, he was also able to persuade current Scientologists to speak candidly about their experiences. He looks into the church’s financial resources and examines their tax-exempt status. He presents startling new source material about its complex and controversial founder. And he examines the relationships of both Tom Cruise and John Travolta to the church.

Is that even possible?

Re: Lawrence Wright's new book January release date

Dear Mimsey, isn't that the same day we find out who Connor Cruise's real father is??

Concerned.

Dear Concerned,

Conner is adopted just like his sister Isabella, however Suri is a different story. She is the only (that we know of) Thomas Mapother IV scion.

Sigh.

When you think about Mick Jagger's 7 kids, or Rod Stewart's 8 kids, you realize that Tom was faking it in Rock of Ages.... Tom has so much $ he could support a whole tribe of chillin's, but the Cruise missile is kept in the hanger. And don't think actors don't have spunk - Kevin Costner has 7 and Donny Osmond has 5 and his sister 8. And how could we forget Mel Gibson with 8?

Re: Lawrence Wright's new book January release date

When you think about it, maybe Stanley Kubrick was a closet marriage counselor, and was trying to get a little life in the ol' Cruise bedroom happin', and get a little Nicruiser out in the world...

It could happen.

Good one, Freeminds! :hifive: That's one quote that should go down in history.

There's another article about the book in Perez Hilton today.

I wonder if OSA is getting the idea that they will be taking an even worse beating in 2013 than in 2012. Hard to imagine, I know, but the hits just keep on coming.
