List of Independent Scientologists; Doctrinal differences

If not already listed, these people should perhaps be added to the "Big List of over 1000 Exes Who Have Spoken Out" because they have left the official Church of Scientology. That is for others to decide.

I'm making a separate thread because the list raises some separate and distinct issues.

TL;DR summary of interesting points emphasized below:
  1. "As an independent Scientologist you are your own leader." This may signal a move away from rigid, top down hierarchy and a fundamentalist, deductive and text-bound ideology. The proof will be in the conduct and behavior.

    .
  2. "ANYONE WHO USES ANY PART OF SCIENTOLOGY TECH, even if other parts are not true for you, is welcomed to be on this list. LRH said what's true for you is what's true for YOU. A person who blindly accepts everything is a robot not a Scientologist." This may also signal a move from hierarchy, rigidity, and KSW No. 1 to a more flexible, "use the tools available," "professional judgment" view of the tech that appeared to exist in the 1950s and early 1960s before the creation of the Grade Chart and KSW No. 1 in 1965. Again, the proof will be in the conduct and behavior.

    .
  3. At least a partial rejection of the practice of "enforced disconnection." However, the phrase, "heavily-abused practice of enforced disconnection" disturbingly seems to imply that a policy of "enforced disconnection" that is not "heavily abused" may be acceptable.

    .
  4. "Freezoners are naturally invited."

A final observation. Given the total number of official, "on-lines" Scientologists in the world, the current number of 126 independent Scientologists is not insignificant. This is particularly true given the training and auditing levels of the people on the list, and their time and effort investments in Scientology. My guess is that DM is not pleased.

From Scientology-Cult as of 06/15/10 - The Indie 500:
Your life belongs to you. Not to corporate Scientology, a self-appointed dictator/sciopath, or his PTS sycophants. Let's move Scientology toward normalcy by ending the heavily-abused practice of enforced disconnection. Get your name on the list, be one of the first 500 indie Scientologists and take your life back. The ranks of indie Scientologists are growing daily. With enough names on the list we will break the back of disconnection, not because of this list, but because of the power of your communication lines being restored.

Names appear in random sequence. As an independent Scientologist you are your own leader.

ANYONE WHO USES ANY PART OF SCIENTOLOGY TECH, even if other parts are not true for you, is welcomed to be on this list. LRH said what's true for you is what's true for YOU. A person who blindly accepts everything is a robot not a Scientologist. Anyone who retains the right to their own integrity belongs on this list. Freezoners are naturally invited. This is some kind of silly "feel good" exercise for accumulating as many people as possible - on a list - who've been tricked into identifying themselves as "Independent Scientologists."

Gee, maybe there are 10 milliion Scientologists, or even a billion Scientologists, after all, didn't "LRH" (the spiritual leader of these "Independent Scientologists," who, per LRH's guidance "think for themselves," etc.) say that people should brush their teeth?

Well, do you brush you teeth? Or maybe you don't brush your teeth but just think that you do? Hey! Then you're a Scientologist!

Yay!!!!!

Funny thing that list. I thought it would accumulate more names than it has.

The list owner (Steve Hall) has a problem with what criteria are needed to go onto the list. Originally it seemed to be for true blue scios, then I asked if I could go on it, pointing out that I didn't consider myself a scio but used the parts of scn I found useful. He said yes, and then added in the bit about who could join, to accommodate others like me I guess.

I don't see too many others like me on there, but, well. . . .

If it seems a bit ridiculous, propose better criteria in your posts here. I'll keep my mouth shut, otherwise I might get kicked off that list, and it suits my purposes to be on it. :)

A new 'big list'

I'd rather there was nobody who identified him/herself as an 'Independent Scientologist', because I don't believe that there is anything useful to be learned from the ramblings of (paranoid, megalomaniac, racist, bigamist, liar...) Hubbard.

Still, we live in the real world, and human beings are social creatures. Taking that first step towards freedom is easier if you know that there are people - maybe people you remember - on the outside who share common ground with you.

So: a list of freezoners, or whatever they want to call themselves. I imagine that it'll never be a huge list because many people will remove themselves from the list when they complete the process of waking up, but it does no harm* and it might do some good. My enemy's enemy is my friend, sort of thing.

Whether people choose to list themselves is another matter, of course.

(* Unless being named on the list gets you fair-gamed, of course.)

It's very Scientological to allow almost anyone to become a Scientologist, then - gradually - tighten the screws. Front groups are a variation of this, as are many PR outreach efforts.

Person A: Do you like to help others?

Person B: Um.... ah, yes, I guess so...

Person A: Good! Than you're a Scientologist!

Person B: I am? What's that?

Person A: Etc.

The fellow who started this is confused about the inherently devious stratified nature of the subject of Scientology, and - not having quite figured that out, even though Hubbard's May 1955 'Manual on Dissemination' would give him some clues, and Hubbard's 'PR Series', and other writings, more clues - is a little unsteady as he goes along with his efforts.

You can add my nick to it. Not by name.
Just so you know, I don't maintain the list. I just report on it and cross-post it.

Also, my understanding is that the list only accepts people who have "come out" under their real names, but I could be wrong.

In any event, if you are interested in getting on the list, I suggest you go to:
Scientology-Cult - The Indie 500.

Or, as stated on the page, contact Thoughtful (Steve Hall) at indie500 [at] nyms.net.

This makes an interesting point. The ex Scientologists of ESMB are publicly speaking out about Scientology.

So the list should include al exes that speak out publicly, name known or not.

or

The list should state those that have spoken out whose names are known.

The list would be much longer if you included those who have not divulged their name.

Also there's a lot of OT's and SO on the list.
You can add my nick to it. Not by name.

No, because the List specifically states:
ANYONE WHO USES ANY PART OF SCIENTOLOGY TECH, even if other parts are not true for you, is welcomed to be on this list.
If an Ex doesn't use any part of the Tech, then the Ex is not welcome on the list, doesn't belong on the list, and probably doesn't want to be on the list anyway.

Also, my clear understanding is that the List if for people who are publicly out -- i.e., using their real names.

This is what I was refering to and answers my question as well.
The Big List includes only former members who have spoken out against the Church of Scientology's crimes and abuses in their own names, not using a pseudonym. The list includes people who still consider themselves Scientologists and people who do not. Many of the people named spoke out first years, even decades, ago. Many others spoke out for the first time in the last few weeks and months. Every person on the list has given a great gift to others. Together, their voices cannot ever be silenced.
The Big List
How funny that the source of the confusion is a MU -- a misunderstood word.

There are two lists.

The first, the one Right ON is referring to and contributes to, is the Big List of over 1000 Exes Who Have Spoken Out maintained at WWP.

The second list, the one I'm referring to in this thread, is the List of Independent Scientologists -- properly known as the Indie 500 -- which is maintained at Scientology-Cult.

I've been keeping track of the List of Independent Scientologists -- i.e., the Indie 500 -- and cross-posting it here and on WWP.

Obviously, the lists are not identical.

A person who blindly accepts everything is a robot not a Scientologist. Anyone who retains the right to their own integrity belongs on this list. Freezoners are naturally invited. Perhaps it may interest some to know that the idea behind the list of those who had left the CofS was originated a lot closer to home than its current usage would suggest.

The original idea was to post a list of those willing to identify themselves as having left the CofS in protest over its crimes, corruption and abuses. It was intended originally to inform still-in scientologists of where their friends stood on the matter and why they had chosen to leave the CofS.

As a still-in scientologist scanned through page after page of names and faces they were bound to encounter someone (or many people) that they actually knew personally. The list was to include photos, Training Level, Case Level and CofS bona-fides etc. This, it was proposed, would give them cause to think.

It was (and probably still is) a good idea from that perspective.

It's a bit contradictory isn't it to be on a list claiming to be an "Independent Scientologist", if you don't consider yourself to be a Scientologist? And, by being on the list, you're asserting legitimacy & credibility in the writings by L. Ron Hubbard? I'm confused.

The problem started with me. :D

In the beginning there was no obvious contradiction. It was a simple Independent Scientologists list. I wrote to Steve Hall and said I'd like to be on the list, but I didn't actually consider myself a Scio any more although I did use the parts of Scn that I found useful. I noted that Mark Headley (BFG) was on the list, and he uses far less of it than I do.

So Steve put me on the list and added the "explanation" at the top. Steve's 100+ list is at heart simply a list of people with Scn connections who want to be on it. Anything more specific than that would be false. The 1000+ "Big List" is a different list.

Oh, I noticed the links now appearing so I just asked him to add a link to my Yawnguy website next to my name (#84) and he now has. Nice guy. :)
