IMHO, what's added into the mix, is how it's drilled into you that $cn is humanity's only hope. That if you leave, you will die and die and die a million deaths. It's worse than the hell that Christians threaten you with if you don't toe the line. So, when you're out there trying to get a job, get an apartment, pull a life together, a part of you is convinced that you've killed your spiritual future, so what does it matter? It takes quite some time to shake that off.

Yep. Installed phobias - on steroids. The cult of scientology installs terror into the true believer. So many phobias are drilled in - we should make a list one day.

Yes, it does take time to shake that one off - but once you do, you have really broken through the invisible chains, or the prison of belief, or as I call it, the tunnel of mind control. Then you can begin to really sort out your own thoughts, feelings and behaviour in life. Keep having sneaky thoughts that scientology has something decent to offer, that it might be the planets only salvation, or that it is a road to total freedom, and you remain in the mental prison.

Do we know for a fact that DM is still making people salute the beagles?

If I were DM I would have knocked that off knowing that people are reading about it along with a lot of other critical stuff and if they see the dog salute story is true then they would assume the other stuff is true.

I would love to hear their answers too, but I would be afraid to ask. From the past experience of a mutual friend, the conversation would likely be extremely awkward, and might harm our relationship. The truth is, these are family friends, not close personal friends, so I'm not too interested in rocking this boat with them. It's a bummer that this fear is here, because I never hesitate to ask my Christian friends difficult theological questions, and none of them denies the various types of abuse and corruption that can and does go on in churches.

I totally understand. Maybe you could ask a mutual friend, not family, ask the questions, but in a non combative, but curious way. Just the asking of the questions might get the family member to start to think for themselves and check out the internet.

Just an idea, and if you don't feel comfortable going that route, then don't do it.
