As someone else pointed out, a serious fallacy is the notion of eternal increase. It just doesn't happen in this limited universe.

As a former manager, I found some kinds of statistics to be useful but generally when seen over a period of a year (rather than a week), always in combination with other indicators that might give some indication of quality, and always in the context of what else happened during the period under review.

And in any case what the Scientologists use aren't really statistics but just simple and rather crude measures of activity, all quite manipulatable (eg well done auditing hours, student points). Now why didn't I think of what while I was in it?
