A celeb this guy was certainly in the U.S., quarterback John Brodie. I find this piece from Sports Illustrated very entertaining (and true), it is almost 40 years old. The first half deals with $cientology, SI bluntly calls it a cult:

Thanks for the link; I forgot about this Scientology celeb from about forty years ago. Interesting writing style in the "old days" in Sports Illustrated.
