Scientology DVDs in schools

A scientologist doctor, who gave evidence on the suicide of a church member she treated, is promoting a controversial educational resource in New Zealand schools.

Dr Helen Smith gave evidence this year to a coroner's inquiry after the death of David Sampson in December 2008. Sampson had won $651,000 in Lotto's first division in 1991, but battled with alcohol abuse and depression.

A friend of Sampson was upset at the church's policy against psychiatric help: "He was suffering from depression, but he wasn't seeing a psychiatrist because they're against that."

Smith, who treated Sampson on two occasions, confirmed she did not offer to refer him to a psychiatrist.

"I definitely recommended he get some counselling, some extra help and get sorted out. But I know, from his own ideas, he wouldn't have wanted to see a psychiatrist anyway, because he didn't want to take medication for pretty much anything."

She last spoke to him the day before his death, to refer him to an ear, nose and throat specialist for sinus problems, but said his death came "out of the blue".

The coroner was satisfied the death was self-inflicted, and a full inquest was not held. Smith's actions were not criticised in any respect by the coroner, and the Church of Scientology's opposition to psychiatry was not mentioned in the findings.

A Herald on Sunday investigation into the group has looked into two other suicides of church members. Aucklander Paul Cooper's grieving mother burnt a photo of church founder L Ron Hubbard, which she found among his possessions. And Aaron Saxton, the son of another Auckland church member who killed himself, afterwards worked in a nautically themed Scientology organisation in Australia. Saxton's allegations about behind-the-scenes church activities caused an uproar after they were quoted in the Australian Senate this month.

Church of Scientology New Zealand secretary Mike Ferriss denied any link between the church and suicide: "In fact religions in general are noted to have far fewer suicides than the rest of society at large. So it is with us."

Youth for Human Rights, a church-backed education group, has been distributing a DVD and booklet about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights since 2006.

The DVD cover features a quote from Hubbard, and a booklet inside offers quotes from "famous human rights leaders" including Gandhi and Martin Luther King.

The Education Minister of New South Wales has advised schools in the Australian state not to use or distribute the DVD.

But Smith, the New Zealand organiser for Youth for Human Rights, said the resource enabled teachers to "show the kids how human rights work, which is pretty cool".

Education Minister Anne Tolley said no concerns had been brought to her attention: "If parents have any concerns they should contact their school's board of trustees."

Ferriss claimed the DVD was "endorsed" by the Human Rights Commission - but information about the DVD was this week pulled from the commission's website after inquiries from the Herald on Sunday.

Gilbert Wong, spokesperson for the Human Rights Commission, said while Youth for Human Rights took part in a commission programme in 2006, this was historic and did not amount to an endorsement.

Northcross Intermediate school in Browns Bay is using the DVD as part of class discussions. Principal Jonathan Treday described his school as "progressive" and open-minded, and he had no problems with where the material came from.

"If someone like Tom Cruise wanted to come and talk about Scientology, saying 'This is who we are, make up your own mind,' he's welcome."

Treday added any controversy over such a visit would possibly have positive spin-offs: "We might get a few more enrolments, with a few more mothers coming to class."

Saxton, the former Scientologist whose allegations formed part of a blistering attack in the Australian Senate, said he suspected the DVD was an attempt to recruit new members - a claim denied by Smith.

I am bumping this to help publicise that Dr. Helen Smith, Auckland, New Zealand runs a Scientology front group which is to get young people into the clutches of L Ron Hubbard and that Dr Helen Smith is spinning the cover-up story to hide the Church of Scientology, NZ's possible interference in a person's 'psych' treatment, after which the person committed suicide.
This happened on the turf of OSA local boss, Mike Ferriss.

Very interesting, db.

That Jonathon Treday is a real moron. He thinks having TC at hs school would be a GOOD thing? Has he been living under a rock or something?

Thanks for posting this.

Who else has had experiences with Dr Helen Smith in Auckland? Doesn't she run a kind of naturopathy-type medical clinic? Isn't she much like the naturopath who treated Lisa McPherson in Florida?

An Auckland scientologist feeling sick with a serious disease may well want to go elsewhere but her clinic for treatment. How scientologist doctors cover their tracks makes me sick, sick, sick~ They are physical and emotional terrorists.

I knew Helen. I did various work with her in CCHR over the years.

I’m not comfortable making personal comments about people on public message boards but I am comfortable saying that Helen is a very good example of what the mental programming of Hubbard’s methods do.

These methods leave a person without their own volition, without their own dreams, without control of their own feet, hence they are unable to walk the path of their own lives/journey, freely.

Helen is a sweet person, under all the crap is a magnificent woman.

Come on out Helen! There are people out here in the big wide world who love and respect you.

Nothing is impossible Helen!

Is a naturopath even a real medical doctor? Second question- do they truly have any kind of doctorate? For real?

To the best of my knowledge a naturopath trains in the methods of "natural healing" with a training provider registered for such purposes. Generally naturopaths are not also medically trained as doctors though more and more these days, I am bumping into medical doctors who are also trained in natural healing methods.

Helen is a registered medical practitioner. She is registered as one under NZ regulation. I am not sure what training she may have undergone to also practice natural medicine.

Thanks for that sallydance. I understand your not wanting to talk publicly about Helen other than what you've said. What you said does raise the question for me, though: are all Scientologists great people? Your words seem to suggest that it is Hubbard's vile mind control only that makes people what they are, where I would suggest that there are lovely and not so lovely people everywhere - before they run into Scientology, and that the mind control may well aggravate what's not good in them - well, I can't see how it would make them any better. Anyway, don't let this interrupt your amazing story. I look forward to reading more of it.

Claire, Helen is a medical doctor. I should have been clearer in my other post. I just wondered if she ever used what she learned in medical school, or if she was likely to treat her patients the way Megan Shields and other Scientology doctors have in the past, with vitamins and homeopathy/naturopathy. And would she, for example, order an x-ray for someone who had fallen hard on their arm, or do a touch assist or some other kind of assist. . .

Thanks, Kerry and everyone else for your responses.

So this lady is an MD who is also a naturopath but not all naturopaths have an MD.

Oh my God! I never knew Aaron Saxton killed himself! Shit. I knew the guy as a little kid. How sad is that?

I guess the signs were there as he was unravelling in front of us and I never picked it up.

That did NOT make my day. I am sorry for his folks as well.

I think they are referring to Aaron's father who killed himself, The_Fixer.

I wonder what happened to Eva Twedell, Aaron's mother, AFAIK. I think the GO banished her and Rob to the wilderness for years but she eventually got back in, hence Aaron was able to get in. ......at least that is how i connect the dots.

Aaron Saxton - Exit Story

Hi to whoever wants to read this.

It's Aaron Saxton here.

Some people have emailed me and asked me to post my exit story from the Sea Org. I have not done it as yet.

One reason is that I wanted to concentrate on what we did as SO members to other people.

The other reason is that I didn't quite know what to write, facts are facts but interpretation of events is always an individual experience.

I was going to post it on ESMB, but to be honest, I have a hard time on ESMB as most there say they are ex-Scientologist when really all they are is ex-C of S members - half of them still beleive in the junk (LRH Tech) which I find, insane.

So here it is.

I was born Aaron Renee Tweddell. Auckland New Zealand. My parents Ron and Eva Tweddell were in the Sea Org before I was born, and I was raised outside of the SO. I like Pina Collidas and walks on the beach. As a natural Leo I am arrogant and self centered but loyal... OK, back to the story...

More of the story on WWP

When i was in AK early 80s the Twedells were off lines and on GO linesci think. I think Rob was declared and possibly Eva as well. I think Eva was trying to get back on lines...but it certainly wasnt easy as far as i could see. The Link you provided with Aarons write up makes it sound like the Twedells had been in the SO not long before he was born, but it may have been years before he was born. It is quite confusing. I worked in the org. I knew of theTwedells and saw Eva in the org sometimes.......it was always to see someone in the GO. I think i met Rob once, but really i think people were not supposed to have anything to do with him.

To the best of my knowledge, Eva is living in the North Island, New Zealand, at an undisclosed location. My understanding is that she is no longer associated with organised scientology in any way.
