My Descent into FanatIcism and the Hard Climb Out

I was drafted near the end of the war and got in scn about 2 months after I got out of Uncle Sam's Canoe Club. The navy experience was the one thing that saved me from the SO. No fucking way I was donning another cracker jack suit.

Where you drafted into the Army, but then joined the Navy to avoid being cannon fodder? Lot's of guys did.

Get this; when I showed up at the San Diego Navy base for Boot Camp, the Vietnam war was winding down. The first night in the transient barracks a bunch of us were watching the 11:00 o'clock news on TV waiting for them to assign us bunks (hurry up and wait was S.O.P.). They announced that the draft was being abolished.

Several of the guys around there turned green. They had such shocked looks on their faces. One guy was shaking his head going 'No.....no.....no' lol.

I had joined just to see the world. I wound up seeing Brunswick, Georgia, which seemed more like the nether regions of the world.

When we got off of 'worm island' and the first 4 week block of Boot Camp, they had newspaper vending machines by the mess hall were we stood in line. One large headline was announcing the withdrawal of forces from Vietnam and the end of the war. That must have really added insult to injury for those poor bastards I mentioned.

We were in boot camp at close to the same time, but I was at Great Lakes. I was in my 3rd week of boot camp when Nixon announced "the end of the war" juuuuuuust two weeks before the 72 election. Of course when I got out 2 1/2 years later, we hadn't completely evacuated yet. 4 months later, after Nixon had been disgraced and left office we finally dumped the last Huey off the carrier deck.

Oh, Paul C! How long was he broadcasting? I remember Curt G but can't place him. It's great that you got to write him true emotions and love before he passed. This MB has been wonderful. Thanks again for steering me here.

Check out 8:57 for my Dad as a Quarterback for
the University of Missouri (#44) and then onto Chicago Cardinals after: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-ONPJZqUNQ

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PFxL7HgIKaI

I can't find videos of his Chicago Cardinals days as a Quarterback (late 40's/early 50's)
nor
his "Color Man" with Curt Gowdy for NBC.

If anyone can help, please send me a link. :)

Love to all, Tory/Magoo

On YouTube there is a video of the 1948 Championship game in which he lost to the Eagles after beating them the year before. There are shots of the Cards' running back AFTER your dad handed off. But the video is funny cuz the game was played in a blizzard and there are some funny anecdotes. It was also the first football game ever televised, so WCAU TV in Philly which USED to carry Eagles games might have an archive. My posting skills have eroded or I'd send you the link to youtube but you know how to find it.:coolwink: After all, you are Magoo, no?

Thanks for this info, SPsince83! :)

My life on the Net has been sketchy due to lack of tools, which is why I asked people on here. I don't want to distract from Jim's story-----so Jim?

Tell us more, please. I love your stories, and since we were there at very similar times,
it's helped me to remember things, too. Thank Gawd we are OUT. :)

You are so lucky to have already had a case of PTSD from the U.S. navy, cause the variety that comes from being in the So is very hard to shake!!:melodramatic:

We had a lot more freedom in the Davis missions than the Sea Org, but as the group got larger we had a lot of the same things of mini-tyrants setting up their little fiefs and being untouchable. Until it was their turn for the hot hand of the HAS to take them down.
This is what finally got it thru to me IT'S NOT A FEW BAD EGGS RUINING THE POLICY AND TECH--IT'S THE POLICY AND TECH PRODUCING THE SAME FUCKING NUTJOB DRAMATIZTION IN ALL THESE DIFFERENT PEOPLE. All the people I had trouble with were acting the same and all were sure they were on-source. And they were, they were little Ron-clones. Just like I had tried to fashion myself, but I couldn't ever quite seem to achieve the mind-meld correctly or be ruthless, angry, or heartless enough, no matter how much I tried! Some people could do it fucking oerfect, though, and those are the ones that were always making the life of decent folks miserable, and seeming to really enjoy it.

Yeah that's true.

It wasn't just the similarity of the uniforms that clued me in. I recognized the operating protocols.

After all, Laffy learned much of his shit in the Navy. It's not a lie that he was a Naval officer during WWII.

I believe the rumors that he was actually an ONI asset. It would fit that he just went off the reservation once he got the training.

Now your touching on it. What finally got me out.

The people who were to worst assholes were enoying it! They didn't care that it was violating all the principles we were suppose to be upholding. This gave them the control they sought.

I subscribe to the theory that when The Old Man was describing '1.1' and 'SP's' and 'Anti-social personalities' he was pretty much psychologically projecting.

The guy smiling in your face with the knife behind his back should be on his coat-of-arms.

I was a Qual Sec for some time and I would have to dish it out as well as take it. I hated dishing it out and would do everything I could to avoid it, which of course made me NOT a good Qual Sec.

I agree with you SOOOO much! When you look at descriptions of people who knew him pre-the
Master days, he was clearly capable of trying to seduce every guy's girlfriend or wife, borrow money from everyone around with no chance of repayment, hypnotize people and humiliate them while under, con companies into giving him equipment based on some cocked up lie, swindle the Navy out of a pension by faking service related disabilities, abandoning his wives and kids, etc., etc. If that's not the behavior of a continuous overts, M W/H individual, I'm don't know what is. I've rarely met anyone committing overts this consistently. We good natured, honest saps were just prey for him! I'm convinced he knew he was using, duping, conning, hurting people in DNS and Scn and got so vindictive and turned so predictably on every person who was ever close with him in running Scn or in his family because he was afraid they saw thru him after being around him a lot. The way he describes how angry people get when they have missed withholds fits him to a fucking Tee,

I googled him before I sent the post to Tory. I wanted to be sure my memory was right. I remembered the AFL broadcasting and that he had won an NFL title but forgot what a big college star he was in the last days when college football was bigger than the pros.

Sounds like a larger than life kind of guy, like Ron tried to con people into thinking he was.

Yes but far better to be pissed than getting shot at in a rice paddy in SE Asia. Man I'm so glad I never got that variety of PTSD!

Wow.

We could probably close up ESMB now and be good. You just said it all.

Reminds me of the time when the theme was "What would Ron do?"

I don't know if you experienced that short era of "what would Ron do".

Speaking of football, remember back when da Bears, on saturday night live -

What would Ditka do?

LOL
