I was drafted near the end of the war and got in scn about 2 months after I got out of Uncle Sam's Canoe Club. The navy experience was the one thing that saved me from the SO. No fucking way I was donning another cracker jack suit.
Where you drafted into the Army, but then joined the Navy to avoid being cannon fodder? Lot's of guys did.
Get this; when I showed up at the San Diego Navy base for Boot Camp, the Vietnam war was winding down. The first night in the transient barracks a bunch of us were watching the 11:00 o'clock news on TV waiting for them to assign us bunks (hurry up and wait was S.O.P.). They announced that the draft was being abolished.
Several of the guys around there turned green. They had such shocked looks on their faces. One guy was shaking his head going 'No.....no.....no' lol.
I had joined just to see the world. I wound up seeing Brunswick, Georgia, which seemed more like the nether regions of the world.
When we got off of 'worm island' and the first 4 week block of Boot Camp, they had newspaper vending machines by the mess hall were we stood in line. One large headline was announcing the withdrawal of forces from Vietnam and the end of the war. That must have really added insult to injury for those poor bastards I mentioned.
After all, you are Magoo, no?

I wanted to be sure my memory was right. I remembered the AFL broadcasting and that he had won an NFL title but forgot what a big college star he was in the last days when college football was bigger than the pros.
