New book about Scientology: Ron the War Hero

"Young L. Ron Hubbard was to host his own program called "Mail Buoy." At the top of the hour on a crisp September day, the newcomer launched his maiden radio broadcast in Ketchikan. Station-owner Jimmy Britton's well-remembered and breathless, asthmatic voice grandly intoned over the airwaves: "KGBU Radio brings you the 'Mail Buoy,' a program especially designed for Alaskan boatmen. It is the hope of this station that the exchange of information regarding the sea and ships will be found of benefit to those who wish to brush up on their calling, to those who wish to study the fine art of fighting the sea, and to those old-timers who can help the world to remember how to make all things shipshape and Bristol-fashion by keeping close tally on the data contained in this presentation."

After a deep breath or two, Britton continued in his unique voice, "Capt. L. Ron Hubbard, whose sailoring and engineering and writing have carried his keels through the Seven Seas is here to command. Captain Hubbard, himself a marine authority, has taken every way of authenticating this material, checking it vigorously against the best known authorities. Questions sent to him in care of this station, if accompanied by a self-addressed, stamped envelope, will be answered either by mail or on the air free of charge.
Here now is Captain Hubbard. (a sound of four bells and a jingle).

Captain Hubbard's flowery introduction sounds suspiciously self-written. But he apparently began to catch the interest of his audience. His first program was titled "Handling Your Hull." Another was called "Anchors." All were of a maritime flavor."

The heavy shirt, ascot and glasses in this photo above match the ones in the photo below. Maybe taken to promote his radio program?

I like history, questioning and examining these photos might lead to more accuracy in LRH and Scientology history.

The original of that shot shows his second wife right behind him in the sailboat. Scientology airbrushed her out, just like Hubbard did in real life: "I never had a second wife."
The hilarity of that quote is that it's logical conclusion is that he never married Mary Sue, and all of his children with her are thus illegitimate.

I recently saw that video clip for the first time. Hubbard's dishonesty in that statement is just jaw dropping.

If I'd run across that clip while I was in the bubble, I would have been gone like the breeze.

Was Mexico an allied power? I thought they were neutral.
Oh no, Mexico was with the allies, they declarerd was on the Axis on June 1st 1942. They sent one squadron to the pacific (yeah not a huge contribution, but still).
Regardless, Hubbard received but a reprimand and continued command of corvettes.
Nope, he did not get a command of his own after that. He was a navigation officer on the Algol IIRC, but not the captain.
Oh and he was never in command of an FR, his ship was an SC.

Thanks - you did a great job finding those articles - I had no idea the explorers club had a bracelet. Were current photography to have the ability of the cameras in the original Bladerunner to prise minute detail from a photo, I could have sussed that out myself. Kudos to you.

I like your theory - however, he has those same sun glasses in other photos -see posts #5 & #19 above. That's why I thought it was an early PR photo shoot when he was running the Dianetics Foundation.

Maybe they tracked down the Magician for the shoot? When you compare the shots of the name plaque in this to the ones in Cakemakers post #40, you can see the running light in both. So I was wrong that it was a prop.

I was wondering though - In Chris's book he discusses Hubbard's claims he had actinic conjunctivitis which he alleges got in 1942. He gives various reasons such as gun flash, bomb blast and strong sunlight. The photos of him sailing the Magician, per the newspaper article, were taken in 1946. I wonder if he had some residual effects requiring tinted prescription sunglasses - they seem so light colored compared to the aviator's he wearing in the newspaper article.

Mimsey

Actinic conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the eye contracted from prolonged exposure to actinic (ultraviolet) rays. Symptoms are redness and swelling of the eyes. Most often the condition is caused by prolonged exposure to Klieg lights, therapeutic lamps, or acetylene torches. Other names for the condition include Klieg conjunctivitis, eyeburn, arc-flash, welder's conjunctivitis, flash keratoconjunctivitis, actinic ray ophthalmia, x-ray ophthalmia, and ultraviolet ray ophthalmia. wiki

Treatment[edit]
The pain may be temporarily alleviated with anaesthetic eye drops for the examination; however, they are not used for continued treatment, as anaesthesia of the eye interferes with corneal healing, and may lead to corneal ulceration and even loss of the eye. Cool, wet compresses over the eyes and artificial tears may help local symptoms when the feeling returns. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) eyedrops are widely used to lessen inflammation and eye pain, but have not been proven in rigorous trials. Systemic (oral) pain medication is given if discomfort is severe. Healing is usually rapid (24–72 hours) if the injury source is removed. Further injury should be avoided by isolation in a dark room, removing contact lenses, not rubbing the eyes, and [bcolor=#ffff00]wearing sunglasses until the symptoms improve.[/bcolor]

They still could be LRH's attempt at publicity photos taken in Ketchikan in 1940.

The 1946 Miami newspaper article photos are not the Magician and the article doesn't claim they were. It says the sailboat in the photos of LRH and Sara is the Blue Water II. What article are you referring to?

That was one of the boats Hubbard bought with Jack Parsons' cash. I'm guessing it wan't long after the article that Jack tracked him down and had the police sicked on him. :)

Mexico's contribution went far beyond the fighting squadron they sent to the Phillipines (shame on me for not even knowing they were an allied power). More than 15,000 Mexican nationals signed up with the American forces and hundreds were casualties. I knew some Mexican EM and NCO's when I was in and they were all damn good soldiers. Mexico took hits from in front. It was in fact the sinking of two Mexican oil tankers by U-boats in the Carribean which brought them into the United Nations. They increased industrial production making a substantial contribution to Allied war material and diplomatically they were instrumental in leading other Latin nations to Declarations. And probably much more.

God!

I do love this board!

There were many soldiers of mexican descent the US army, also many Mexicans helped to fill obs in industry and agriculture that were left vacant when americans went to war.
Thus the impact on the war effort was higher than the small amount of frontline troops would suggest.

Again, don't want to bash anyone who served. Both of my grandfathers were ww2 vets.

Going back to Hubbard - the erroneous fight he had with imaginary subs was werid and for people not intimately familiar with the topic it might sound like some immense show of incompetence. But it was not, it was a pretty normal SNAFU in that war.

Especially since it seems the magnetic deposit gave out tangible readings that confused the crew. Numerous crews - British, Japanese, German, American - you name it, had been guilty of reporting to sink imaginary subs.
Example: The German navy during the first 3 weeks of war reported to have sunk the whole Polish submarine fleet. Which proved to be a PR hit, because soon each and every Polish sub had been accounted for, turning up in allied or neutral ports. Not a single sub was actually sunk.

Now the shelling of the Mexican island? Sounds like a minor issue, but in fact it was a far larger fault. It was unauthorized, live ammo training against an island with allied soldiers on it. In peacetime, this would get him discharged from the navy. They kept him only because the USN was short on people with any seagoing skill.

The three day battle with a magnetic anomaly was better than a SNAFU. It was an excellent training exercise and morale booster for the crew.

What are an FR and SC?

What and where was the Algol...

Algol?

Wasn't that the name of the star the planet Mars eclipsed the day the was droped on Hiroshima?

What are an FR and SC?
FR = Frigate. In ww2 terms, its an escort ship. Its smaller than a DE, but larger than a corvette.
Example: HMS Monnow was a frigate, displacing 1,370 tons and had a crew of 107 people.

SC = Subchaser. In ww2 terms these would be a veriety of small vessels whose main purpose is to carry depth charges and fight subs.
Example: Hubbard's ship the USS PC-815, displacing 295 tons, crew of 59.

Hope this helps with the scale.

What and where was the Algol...
Algol?
USS Algol. It was an amphibious cargo attack ship. Hubbard was offboarded before the ship was sent into any combat action.

Wasn't that the name of the star the planet Mars eclipsed the day the was droped on Hiroshima?
Ships form this class were named after stars. Some of these would feature in Hubbards fiction books or his mythology (inlcuidng Arcturus for example).

My bad - the type was hard to read - the article was about the Blue Water II, not the Magician. Sorry. Mimsey

This ^^^ . When an organisation airbrushes people out of photos, that's all I need to know when I am trying to answer for myself the question "Is this organisation concerned with spiritual TRUTH?" If it can't even tell the historical truth in a photo, then what it is telling its members about spirituality is likely to be similarly peppered with lies. Knowing that one fact (that the church airbrushes inconvenient people like Sara Northrup and Nibs Hubbard out of photos) should be enough to tell any spiritual seeker within the church that they are in the wrong organisation.

Below is a photo of Sara and their baby, Alexis. LRH kidnapped Alexis and took her to Cuba, he then phoned Sara, the distraught mother and told her he cut Alexis in to pieces and threw her in a river.

He deserved to be put in a hospital for the criminally insane for the rest of his life for doing that.

(Sorry for the derail. Nothing LRH did gets me as angry and disgusted as the above.)

The airbrushing is a rotten crock no doubt.

Still the majority of the people who have studied and worked in Scientology have been basically sincere in seeking spiritual development for themselves and others.

I'm an American. Have a look at the history books. We had slavery, apartheid, "The Trail of Tears" and on and on. The crimes of this nation are legion many ongoing in our present day.

Would you condemn America?

Thanks.

Sometime early in 1945 some astrologer noted that either Mars or Pluto (the mind recalls Mars, the heart says Pluto) would eclipse a star whose name begins with "A" that summer and predicted a major event would occur on that date.

That date proved to be either the bombing of Hiroshima or the test at Trinity Site

Very true, it's just a great shame that your leader and mentor L Ron Hubbard didn't remotely share those sentiments.
And who are any of us to judge?

The offenses of the man are legion; dear God it is a terribly LAME thing to lie about one's military service but none approach being unforgivable and most are quite petty. He clearly was often possessed of false values an false purposes. He had a grand vision which more often was grandiose

He nonetheless did things such as produce the COHE and the book Science of Survival which despite it's flaws is still by far the finest basic handbook of human psychology ever written...
