On my last trip to LA, I had lunch with an old high school buddy. He told me, with some surprise, that he had been recently contacted by the Church of Scientology.

Some background: my friend took a few courses and did some auditing back in 1968-69. We got into Scientology at the same time. After about a year, he decided it wasn’t for him and left. It took him several years to get off the mailing lists. But after he changed addresses several times and threatened legal, they stopped sending him stuff.

Now, suddenly, 40 years later, they’re baaaaaack.

My friend was surprised, but more than that, he was seriously creeped out. “How did they find me?” he wondered. He felt like he was being stalked.

Well, it’s all explained in an e-mail from the Pasadena Org, announcing what they laughingly call “The ARC Project.”

“There is a Brand New Game at Pasadena!! We are the first Class V Org on the planet where the field has demonstrated such willingness and competence on the files project that we have been asked to go one step further….

“It’s called THE ARC PROJECT and you can ALL be part of it!!

“The Purpose is to build full understanding between the Org and everyone in our Central Files. The full understanding does not yet exist for some of the folks who have gotten lost in CF. So we restore the ARC by getting the basics in first – locating each person in CF and confirming their contact info. They can then be helped back onto or further up their Bridge!

“Our hat is to be the detectives and locate the people and confirm that they in fact are at that number or live at that address. Then they can be accurately represented in the Org Addresso and approached effectively by the Org or by industrious volunteers and FSMs!!

“Talk about a game where EVERYONE wins – WHAT FUN!!

“There is a variety of hats you could wear – from detective, to in-putting data in Addresso, to phone calls to confirm we have found the right guy, to pulling and returning our beautiful new CF folders, to helping with food/water and signing up more Volunteers for the project, to name some of them. There is definitely something for EVERYONE!!

“All eyes are on Pasadena and the whole wonderful LA field!! Please come in and help us RIGHT NOW so we can set ANOTHER RECORD in completing the ARC Project!!!! We are Trend Setters – movers and shakers – SO MOVE ON OVER HERE AND LET’S SHAKE IT UP!!

“Please come in NOW and BRING YOUR FRIENDS – let’s show the rest of the planet how it’s done…AGAIN!!!”

Okay, Trend Setters, let me get this straight. It’s a project to find people on the address list who are no longer in touch with the Org, who haven’t been in touch with the Org for many years – in the case of my friend, 40 years. People who have decided, for whatever reason, not to continue with Scientology (or to continue it in another location, possibly even as an independent). People who have made it clear through their actions that they no longer want to be contacted by the Church of Scientology. People who, many of them, have spent considerable time and effort to get OFF the mailing list so the Church is no longer wasting paper and postage on them.

And now, with a lot of effort and “detective” work, the Church is hell-bent on finding these people again, putting them back on the mailing list, and contacting them to sell them more Scientology.

Why?

One has to ask, what part of “I’m not interested” don’t they understand?

I know, I know. There are those who would proclaim “everyone on Earth is a Scientologist, they just don’t know it yet.” Or “once a Scientologist, always a Scientologist – they’re just ‘inactive’ or ‘temporarily off the Bridge.” I was guilty of this myself when I was working in Church Marketing. It was well known that the bulk of the Int Addresso was “inactive.” We called them “inactive Scientologists.” It never occurred to me that, in all probability, many of these people were no longer Scientologists at all.

So here we have Project ARC, “to build full understanding between the Org and everyone in our Central Files.”

Which begs the question, what definition of understanding are they using? What definition of ARC are they using?

Because there’s no effort to understand the reality of the people they contact. No, the project is all about enforcing the Church’s understanding on them. The Church understands that they are all still Scientologists. The Church understands that they all have to be gotten “back onto their Bridge.” That’s the Church’s “reality.” To hell with the public person’s reality.

In other words, enforced affinity, enforced reality, enforced communication – and enforced understanding.

I’m reminded of a lonely middle aged man who finds his “little black book” in a trunk in the attic, listing the girls he dated in high school twenty or thirty years ago, and he begins a campaign to call them all and “rekindle the old flame.” Dude, sorry to break it to you, but they’ve all moved on. And there’s a reason they haven’t called you in decades.

If the Church is really serious about increasing their membership numbers, how about dusting off some of those old Planetary Dissemination Campaigns. The ones that actually worked.

But that would be work. That would be hard. It would require staff and money and expertise. It’s much “easier” to browbeat staff (and now, apparently, volunteer public) to call long-neglected mailing lists of people who aren’t interested and give them a ton of enforced reality.

What is it with the Church that they can’t let people go? If you blow the Sea Org, there’s a whole “blow drill” to get you back, Dozens of staff are mobilized, and in some cases PIs are hired to track the person down. When John Brousseau recently blew, they sent 20 Int staff and unknown numbers of PIs to Texas to try to get him back.

And now they’re trying to “recover” anyone who’s ever bought a book or done a course, attempting to mobilize field Scientologists, hat them as “detectives” (PIs?), and get them to search out and find these people.

And if they don’t come back, what will you do? Mobilize field Scientologists to follow them around in black SUVs?

The orgs are introverting. Cannot get new people. Trawl through files instead. Introversion causes lack of perception and stupidity. Cannot see that they are creating big "ARC BREAKS" with people who thought they were out of the clutches of the cult. Don't get it that these inactive files are full of people who, because they *did* have some connection with the cult, now listen and watch and read *very* carefully on all the "entheta" out there about scio. They are on web boards. The COS are trying to pull in their *enemies*.
More footbulletry. The ones in the org who work on this "ARC" project are going to get an earful and need "destimulating". But no auditors left to do it.

Now let me remind everyone of why this is NOT a bad thing:

IT COSTS THE CULT MONEY

All those promo pieces that they mail out cost $$$$$$. Every dollar that they spend trying to sell their crap to someone who will never buy it is money they can't spend being the bastards that they are.

I INTENTIONALLY give feeble sums of money to various Left-Tard groups like the ACLU from time to time because it makes them spend money to send me promo. Even better, these guys will actually forward my name and address to OTHER marxist asshat front groups who will then spend their own money sending me THEIR stuff.

As a Tea Party Libertarian/Conservative, there is nothing they could send me that would ever convince me to join their ranks. But they don't know that. I'm costing them money every freaking month. It also allows me to keep something of a closer eye on the crazies.

So all you ex-scientologists out there should keep this in mind when the cult starts sending you promo. Just throw it away. Don't get upset. Remember that the cult just spend money and got no return on it. When you complain to them and convince them to stop sending you crap, you're doing them a favor. That promo grunt will just send that promo to someone else to fill his quota, and that other person might not be so inoculated against the cult's evil as you are. By silently tossing that promo instead of complaining, you might be saving someone from the very same fate you once escaped from yourself.

I must tell you that 5 different people in Flag contacted me to come back last year, after 7 years away.
I told them that I was no longer a Scientologist.
That I did not believe in it. Well, they did not accept that, and told me that they understood me and want to acknowledge me, because the Tech was faulty, that now with the Basics, I would be very happy, and progress in the Bridge.
I felt that they did not understand me - I left ARC broken with many registration cycles, invalidation of my case level, training level, demands to repeat courses, and I hit the internet, and the rest is history!!! Then, I started to tell them that their severance pay when they leave the Sea Org would be $500.00 regardless of how many of years of service, that the staff was forced to make abortions, that David Miscarriage has a lifestyle of the rich and famous with personal trainer, hairdresser, cook who travels with him in private planes, and that DM has several motorcycles, luxury cars, etc... I told them that LRH was a con man, and that I knew enough to keep me away for many lifetimes over and over again.
I repeated the action so many times, that they never called me again.
If they call me again, I will tell again every thing that I know, perhaps some staff will wake up.

I was nice the first phone call.

The second phone call (attempting to push off "The Basics") I told the female voice to take all of scientology and stick it up hubbard's ass.

No third call.

This was about 18 months ago.

Many of those people were never Scientologists to begin with. That is the problem with thier whole membership stat. Anyone in CF is considered a member. Whether they just bought a book, or took a basic course and never went back. It is a big FALSE REPORT.

If you write them an ugly nasty letter about how bad they are and they're just a space alien cult then you will be categorized as "Entheta Letter Deadfile" you will be taken out of CF and put in the HCO Deadfiles.

If they still contact you after that, take a win, they're beyond desperate.

it's a really good point, i agree. let them spend the money sending you crap. of course, i disagree on the ACLU slam as i am a proud supporter of the bill of rights and defending it...but i also allow right wing organizations to leave me on their lists so they waste money on it. i think we are canceling each other out.

There are two forces at work here.

The first is the distorted worldview that many religious people have. It tells them that they are Right and that God is on their side. All they have to do is to Evangelise, and God will miraculously bring the sheep in to the fold. They don't have to learn any skills, think for themselves, do anything difficult.
It doesn't work! So they are given a story that explains why it isn't working - it's the Devil! It's Xenu! It's the Commies, the New World Order, it's important IBPs (Imaginary Bad People) who by opposing them prove that they are Important Good People.

The other force comes from the CoS being a high pressure sales scam. "Make money, make more money" as LRH said, forget anything long term, forget Clearing the Planet, just lie, cheat and steal money from people. This is predicated, as all scams are, on there being an endless supply of gullible marks.

Put the two together, and you get mad salespersons that any double glazing company would be glad to hire.

Finally, the extra ingedient to the witches brew that is killing the cult is publicity. The fanatics genuinely believe that publicity is good for Scientology, but totally fail to see that it is of much greater benefit to their totally insignificant but strangely scary enemies.
The same contradictory attitute can be seen in their best known members, the Hollywood stars. 'Personalities' crave good publicity, but moan and sue when it reveals that they are just ordinary mortals.
