Jet Propulsion Laboratory

NASA's leading space science lab started by a co-founder with deep ties to the occult

Located in Pasadena, California, Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) is best known for its groundbreaking technology and research in the fields of astronomy and physics. As a branch of NASA, it has been responsible for projects such as Explorer 1, the United States' first satellite (which eventually led to the "space race" with the Soviet Union), and the creation of the Wide Field and Planetary Camera, the main image-capturing component of NASA's Hubble Space Telescope.

Today, JPL is responsible for many space science projects, such as the Cassini-Huygens mission to Saturn, the Mars Exploration Rovers, and the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. Though the facility has been a pioneer in space science since the late 1950s, its roots were in rocket technology.

In 1936, California Institute of Technology (Caltech) student Frank Malina, mechanic Ed Forman, and chemist Jack Parsons executed the first successful rocket experiment in JPL's history. These men, known as the "Rocket Boys," along with the help of Caltech professor and aerodynamicist Theodore von Karman, founded JPL. Though the story of the Rocket Boys has become popular, what is less mentioned is that one of its founding members, Parsons, was a passionate occultist.

Jack Parsons, born as Marvel Whiteside Parsons, was born in 1914. Unlike the other Rocket Boys, Parsons skills were self-taught. Despite his lack of formal education Parsons demonstrated excellence in chemistry, and his work in solid fuel has paved the way for what space travel is today. Nevertheless, Parsons was a firm believer in both science and magick, and it is said that he invoked the Greek god Pan before every rocket test launch.

Parsons, a devoted Thelemite, was one of the earliest American devotees of Aleister Crowley, the notorious British occultist who was denounced by the popular press as "The Wickedest Man in the World." In 1942, Crowley chose Parsons to lead the Agape Lodge of the secret society, Thelemic Ordo Templi Orientis (O.T.O.), in California.

During this time Parsons performed a ritual known as Babylon Working, while his friend and Scientology founder, L. Ron Hubbard took notes. These rituals were a series of sexual magick ceremonies that, in effect, would produce a living Goddess who would help Parsons, playing the Anti-Christ, to change the course of history. It is said that after completing the first phase of Babylon Working, Parsons immediately met a woman, Marjorie Cameron, in his own home.

Parsons and Hubbard believed that Cameron was the living incarnation of the divine feminine Babylon, or the Scarlet Woman, who Crowley had often written about in his texts. Despite dating Sara Northrup at the time, Parsons began a series of sexual magick workings with Cameron in an attempt to conceive a Moonchild. Though a child was never conceived, Cameron and Parsons eventually married, and Hubbard ran away with Northrup.

Parsons died in 1952 from a freak mercury explosion in his home laboratory. He was a devoted pioneer in both fields of science and magick and saw no contradictions between the two. A crater on the far side of the moon is named Parsons in his honor, and his short text Book of Babylon or Liber 49, remains an influential addition to the Magickal Philosopy of Thelema.

Though many of Parsons' science contemporaries refused to work with him due to his dark beliefs, his contribution to space science is irrefutable. Today, Jet Propulsion Laboratory is managed by Caltech and operates NASA's Deep Space Network, a network of communications devices and facilities that supports interplanetary spacecraft missions. JPL's Space Flight Operations Facility and Twenty-Five-Foot Space Simulator are designated National Historic Landmarks.

Additionally, the Laboratory advises many Hollywood studios on the scientific accuracy of their sci-fi productions.

While I have commented on this subject before and drawn the ire of many who want to believe the worst of LRH, it's cathartic for them to do so. LRH continued working for Naval Intelligence related agencies in civilian life as many in military intel do.

Because of Parson's security clearance LRH was probably not the only "asset" assigned to "take notes." There is no evidence LRH practiced "sex magick" or other occult practices.

As I said before LRH became "rogue" when he refused to let CIA (OSS) use his discoveries in dianetics etc... for spook training. :coolwink:

And you have first hand knowledge of this because......? Re: the Sex Magick, his involvement was recorded in the notes taken during the "Babalon Working" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Babalon_Working) and Parson's Liber 49: http://www.sacred-texts.com/oto/lib49.htm

Again with the piece of work called xguardian, former staff in the GO at the Sacramento Org. Since you're recycling your troll B.S, for those who missed it before, or have very short memories and have forgotten, tell us about how Hubbard really was a war hero and his Naval records were sheepdipped. And then tell us about Hubbard's 2nd wife, the Russian spy Sara Komkovadamanov.

It is not cathartic for me to criticize Hubbard because I was never in. Hubbard did not continue to work for the Navy after he was discharged. There is no evidence to support your claims. Hubbard was involved in the Babylon working and other 'magickal' operations with Parsons. He discusses it explicitely here. Gerry Armstrong had access to all of Hubbard's writings and was the official biographer until he was declared. His testimony is credible in light of how he has fought Scientology at great risk to himself for great loss and no gain. He is an idealist.

The CIA were not interested in Hubbard's 'technology' because he didn't have any. The remote viewing project was a means for the CIA to scam money that they needed to fight the cold war. Eventually, the plug got pulled on the remote viewing program because, like all supernatural claims, there is no evidence to support them. James Randi still has his 1 million dollar prize. Explain that.

The guardian's office infiltrated the CIA, the FBI, the IRS, the FDA and others between 1973 and 1976. The US govt. does not like Scientology. You are kidding yourself.

Is this the same guardian's office that Harrassed Paulette Cooper, had an invasion plan for Clearwater, Florida called 'Operation Normandy' and had 11 of it's senior executives imprisoned for perpetrating the largest infiltration of the US government in history? They seem like a trustworthy source of 'data.' Thankyou for sharing.

On the issue of Parsons, it is not surprising that he was a scientist and a occultist. Isaac Newton wrote one of the most important scientific publications in history 'Principia Mathematica' and also practiced alchemy. Francis Collins, the former Director of the National Center for Human Genome Research, has religious views which run counter to his scientific position. He is an old earth creationist. People can hold credible and incredible beliefs in the same brain.

LRH was a war hero. He lost a leg in combat. After he discovered the ring of fire, he was able to grow the leg back by application of the Scientology tech.

Ron was also a nuclear scientist who showed Openheimer and the rest of the Manhattan team how to weaponise the atom. Carelessly perhaps, he exposed himself to massive doses of radiation in the process. Ron was able to run out the radiation by chain smoking.

He also married three times and escaped from bigamy charges by hiding from wog justice and fair gaming his children.

He really was one of a kind. Crowley, Parsons were just dilletante pretenders.

For those interested in the relationship of Jack Parsons and Hubbard, I highly recommend the book, "Strange Angel" by George Pendle. In particular Chapter 11, rock Bottom, that recounts Hubbards introduction into the cabal at Parsons house here in Pasadena, particularly the excerpts from Parson writings and the reminesces(sp?) of Alva Rogers. A couple of excerpts from the book:
From page 253, "... Upon his arrival at 1003, Hubbard Dominated conversations with his anecdotes and wit. When he spoke at the communal supper table, no one could steal the floor from him. He claimed to have been involved in counterintelligence during the war and told of escaping from Japanese-occupied Java on a raft with bullet wounds and broken feet. He said he had gone on to command an antisubmatrine escort vessle in the Atlantic , although not with great success, for it had been sunk four times. Hoever, once reassigned to the Pacific, his depth charges sank two Japanese submatrines. He had mamaged to embroil himself in adventure even whil patrolling the frozen Aleutians, lassinong a polar bear on an ice floe, which in turn climbed aboard the boat and chased the crew, and him, off it. "

From page 255, an excerpt of a letter from Parsons to Crowley, "... About 3 months ago I met Capt. L.Ron Hubbard, a writer and explorer of whom I had known for some time. He is a gentleman, red hair, green eyes, honest and intelligent and we have become great friends...Although He has no formal training in Magick he has an extraordinary amount of experience and understanding of the field...He is the most Thelemic person I have ever met and is in complete accord with our own pricipals."
"... Neison Himmel enjoyed pointing out discrepancies in his stories, much to Hubbards irritation. "I can't stand phoneys and he was so obviosly a phoney. But he was not a dummy. He could charm the shit our of anybody." Alice Kornug put her feelings more simply: "I thought he was a bastard, I disliked him thoroughly."

This is righteous! Especially compared to the stuff he and Sara would shortly be writing to the VA claiming how lame and shelled out he is.

Considering he was 840 miles from the Aleutians with a blown motor in Ketchikan, and the only other crew member was his wife.

Life as Satanist Propelled Rocketeer

Sunday, 19 March 2000, LA Times

By CECILIA RASMUSSEN

I height [sic] Don Quixote, I live on peyote,
marijuana, morphine and cocaine.
I never knew sadness,
but only a madness that
burns at the heart and the brain.

--John Whiteside Parsons

He was an unorthodox genius, a poet and rocket scientist who helped give birth to an institution that would become mankind's window on the universe.

He was also a devotee of the black arts, a sci-fi junkie and host of backyard orgies on Pasadena's stately Millionaires' Row.

John "Jack" Whiteside Parsons, a founder of the legendary Jet Propulsion Laboratory and a maverick visionary honored with a moon crater bearing his name, gave no early hint of the inner stirrings that propelled him to worship the devil and lead an extraordinary double life: respected scientist by day, dedicated occultist by night.

Over a little more than a decade, the tall and vainly handsome Parsons skillfully twinned his two existences as rocketeer and antichrist leader of the occult Ordo Templi Orientis.

His mysterious death in an explosion in 1952 left many wondering whether Parsons was a victim of murder or suicide--or simply of an accident at his own momentarily careless hands.

Born Marvel Whiteside Parsons in 1914, he was a mama's boy who hated authority and detested social mores. He was reared by his aging, wealthy grandparents and his mother, Ruth. Embittered by her adulterous husband, also named Marvel, who abandoned his family, Ruth began calling her son John.

Young John found his companions in poetry, which he read the way other boys read comic books. He also gulped down the space and sci-fi fantasies of Jules Verne. He and his childhood pal, the mechanically gifted Ed Forman, tinkered with black-powder rockets and pocked their backyards with craters.

Parsons was at USC when word of Caltech graduate student Frank Malina's project on rocket propulsion and high-altitude rockets reached him and Forman. The young duo brazenly offered to help. Even though neither youth had a degree, Theodore von Karman, the director of Caltech's Guggenheim Aeronautical Laboratory and one of the world's leading scientists, took them up on their offer.

Unencumbered by academic knowledge, Parsons was a cookbook chemist obsessed with things that go bang, while Forman helped turn designs into hardware. On Halloween 1936, the rocketeers dug trenches and piled up sandbags in the Arroyo Seco and attempted to test a rocket motor they had built. Fueled with a brew of gaseous oxygen and methyl alcohol, the motor burned for three seconds.

This inauspicious beginning marked the start of rocketry in California at a time when America still saw space exploration as pulp fiction. The test site in the Arroyo Seco later became JPL.

Von Karman allocated campus lab space to the rocketry project. But after two lab explosions, the group--by then dubbed the "Suicide Squad"--was kicked off campus and headed back to the Arroyo Seco.

Parsons' new fame as Caltech's best explosives expert took him to the courtroom as an expert witness. In 1938, he testified against Los Angeles Police Department Lt. Earl Kynette, a mayoral crony accused in the car bombing of an ex-LAPD detective-turned-private eye.

Parsons earned his bread and butter working on a jet-assisted takeoff unit that developed into a solid-fuel rocket that would help win World War II.

Early in the war, in 1942, Parsons and his wife, Helen, moved into an aging Pasadena mansion. The house on South Orange Grove Boulevard was next door to the former estate of beer baron Adolphus Busch with its famous gardens.

But Millionaires' Row had never seen anything like Parsons and his friends.

Parsons converted the rooms into 19 apartments, and invited in an odd mix of Bohemian artists, writers, scientists and occultists. The residents mockingly named the place "the Parsonage," for it was anything but.

Before dropping out of USC, the poetry-loving Parsons had cultivated an interest in the writings of Aleister Crowley, the English sorcerer and Satanist who called himself "Beast 666" and "the wickedest man in the world."

Soon the house on South Orange Grove was a laboratory of another sort--for black magic.

In 1944, Parsons resigned from JPL in favor of whizzing through time and space via peyote, mescaline, marijuana, opiates and hallucinogens.

Soon, the marriage began to unravel. Helen became pregnant by another member of the Parsonage circle, and Parsons took up with Helen's beautiful 18-year-old sister, Sara Northrup, before divorcing Helen.

Mutual curiosity about the mind's power led Parsons into a friendship in 1946 with L. Ron Hubbard, the future founder of Scientology. Hubbard moved into the house and later married Sara, Parsons' lover and sister-in-law, before divorcing his first wife.

According to "Sex and Rockets: The Occult World of Jack Parsons," a new book by John Carter (a pseudonym), Hubbard chanted incantations while Parsons and his new lover, Marjorie Cameron, tried to produce a "moon child," a "magical child" with superior intellect and powers whose birth would occur on the astral plane, not the physical one.

The ceremony was to span 12 consecutive nights. But when rituals called for a naked pregnant woman to jump nine times through fire to ensure a safe delivery, the neighbors began protesting. The police looked into the matter, but nothing came of their investigation.

Parsons and Hubbard, who had united to take on Christianity, fell out over more trivial matters. Carter writes that the two argued over a sailboat venture that ended in a court dispute.

Disillusioned with Hubbard, Parsons resigned from the Ordo Templi Orientis, married Cameron and began exploring the unknown on his own. After one reputed out-of-body experience, he acquired the name "Belarion Armiluss Al Dajjal, antichrist."

But even the antichrist had to eat. Low on funds, he worked for various local aviation companies, including Hughes Aircraft, and bootlegged nitroglycerin.

It was after he left the mansion and moved with his wife into a rented room over the garage at the Cruikshank Estate on South Orange Grove that life began to unravel.

The FBI was investigating him on suspicion of espionage, consorting with communists, including some allegedly at Caltech, and cult activities; the scrutiny cost Parsons his government security clearance.

In June 1952, while his wife shopped for groceries for a planned vacation to Mexico, Parsons mixed chemicals from his arsenal of illegal explosives.

Police reports say the explosives expert dropped the concoction of fulminate of mercury. A deadly blast that could be felt a mile away ripped through Parsons' garage lab, blowing off his right arm, breaking his other arm and both legs, and leaving a gaping hole in his jaw.

He died 45 minutes later. When his mother heard the news, she joined him in death, gulping down a bottle of sleeping pills.

Authorities concluded that his death was a drug-induced accident or suicide. His wife and others believed he was killed by the recently paroled Kynette, whom Parsons had helped put in prison.

To this day, there's a joke in the aerospace community that JPL stands for "Jack Parsons' Laboratory" or "Jack Parsons Lives." The Crater Parsons, named in his honor, happens to be on the moon's dark side.

I like that "early in the war, in 1942..." It's a bit harsh if you're a Pole, given that the Nazis invaded on September 1st 1939.

Also, there's no such thing as the dark side of the moon, except as a Pink Floyd album. It has a far side... but it gets plenty of sunlight, thank you. That's why moons exhibit phases.

Thankyou for correcting me. I had no idea he was so amazing. I have just discovered he protected America from suppressive magnetic deposits and anticipated George W. Bush's pre-emptive strike policy by declaring war on Mexico.

Here is a a "doingness" for you. Read the first 5 Chapters of Crowley's fiction work "Moonchild" (http://hermetic.com/crowley/moonchild/#toc) published in 1917, and then come back to this thread and discourse on it:

Are the protagonists models of the Hubbardian "OT"?
Is the explanation of the "4th Dimension" an expression of "Life is basically a static"?
Is the explanation of "genius" an analog of BT's, spiritualism and channeling?
What is the significance of "Will to Live vs Will to Nirvana"? Are there any parallels to that in Scientology?

And, how do you account for the parallels between Crowley's Philosophies as expounded here, vs Hubbards?

Anyone?
