I think that people on fora such as this don't always think about the fact that they are talking to other living breathing human beings with feelings and, thus, aren't always as tactful as they would be in an IRL situation or any other where they actually knew the person.
John evidently still finds value and interest in Scn techniques and concepts. Now, before anyone rolls their eyes and sneers, think about this: most of the exes here were in CofS for years and years. So it's obviously difficult to leave. To leave the methodology as well as CofS, Inc, one would need to change their mind about the beliefs. That's not always a slam dunk.
I've seen so many people over the years say about or to Scientologists that they should be able to see that Scn doesn't do this or that, that Hubbard lied, etc. But hey, many people say that stuff about Xtians, too, right? Has anyone read Christopher Hitchens' comment about people exclaiming over the rainbow at Tim Russert's memorial service? It was pretty cutting and pithy. I could tell that, to him, it was so obvious that there is no god, no spirituality, no omens, no signs. Do you think he converted very many people from Xtianity? I don't! I think most true believers who read his stuff thought "Wow, sour grapes." Or "What a dick."
Why would this be any different? I've yet to see a burning bush (bad jokes and puns aside- I mean an Old Testament sort. I know you guys have dirty minds cuz I'm no different.

), I've yet to see an angel, or a vision. I also don't believe in the golden tablets or the Angel Moroni. But if anyone thinks I'm going to try to convert my Christian friends or my Mormon/Christian friend, they got another think coming. And you know, even if I tried, if I were to say the sorts of things He Man and others are saying here to John (though tailored for a different belief system) I doubt that I'd be successful.
Skeptics and exes and "bitter defrocked apostates" (that's not a swipe, by the way- I definitely qualify as such myself) tend to be rather evangelical. It seems to bother some of them when someone still professes Scn when the skeptics, exes, etc, know better. So they think "hey, why can't that guy?" Well, it's for the same reason most true believers tended to roll their eyes at Christopher Hitchens.
Of course, I'm probably a bit softer and less annoyed by this sort of thing than some of my friends in the critics scene are. But I have my moments, too. For me, the line in the sand is evidence of the cult's wrongdoing and people who do not listen or pay attention, even after it happened to them or they witnessed it. But you know, the true believer thing is the true believer thing- it's kind of a different situation.
