Well this is interesting! The Tampa Bay Times has a story about the dueling petitions!

http://www.tampabay.com/news/scient...ons-involving-leah-remini-the-irs-and/2335085

Two dueling online petitions have emerged since the Aug. 15 premiere: one calling for the IRS to investigate Scientology's tax exempt status. That one was launched by Jeffrey Augustine, Scientology researcher and husband of former Scientologist Karen de la Carriere, who served aboard the church's ship Apollo with founder L. Ron Hubbard.

The other, launched by a teenage Scientologist in India, calls for the cancellation of the series, alleging it is a "hate show" inciting violence.

I wish they had posted a link to the petition, which is at 4898, btw. We should pass 5000 by tonight.

Bump:

I virtually NEVER donate to causes online. Key word is "virtually". I donated $25 of my precious, hard-earned cash to Change.org's campaign to counter Scn's move against Leah Remini's exposure. It's rare that I can be so confident that my contribution will actually go to a worthy cause: Keeping $cientology Working--at self-destructing.

Thank you, Jeffrey Augustine, for sharing this link and giving me a chance to make amends for my years of contributing to a destructive cult.

In the 1950’s and early ‘60’s, the Scientology enterprise traded not as a “religion” but as the Hubbard Association of Scientology International (HASI) it was a corporate taxable entity. Also, it promoted itself and its practices as a “science of the mind” and as philosophy.

When the US government took action against the enterprise based on its claims of healing folks and their use of the “e-meter” in its practices, the Scientology enterprise opted to begin to claim religious status so as to gain exemption from government “interference” with and oversight of its cult activities.

This particularly occurred in Australia when the Government of Victoria called for an investigation into Scientology and its practice. I personally saw documents/telex instructions for the HASI in Melbourne (Australian HQ) to begin to adopt and assert a religious status and cloaking to protect it from governmental oversight. This charade occurred in Australia in 1963, and was followed in England when the findings of the Victorian Inquiry into Scientology were so damning . . . Hubbard was found to be a complete fraud and liar, and the practices of Scientology resoundingly found faulty and criticized.

See the findings of that Australian governmental inquiry here:
