Reverend Ken Hoden on marriage? Please. There were many observations that led to my finally walking out the door. One of the big ones was my observation of Lisa Hoden, Ken's wife.
Lisa was originally from Chicago and was a key factor in my involvement as she was the staff member that picked me up to bring me into the Chicago Org, for the very first time as I had no vehicle then. She soon after recruited me for staff and I joined.
I remember when Lisa joined the SO. I was super excited for her. She got to go to Gold to live her dream of being a singer, while on staff. Wow! That's what they always promise artists when they con them into joining staff but in this case it actually happened.
Lisa sang on one (maybe more) of the Scientology music CDs, State of Mind (that we as staff members listened to frequently as we did our mundane jobs).
Well, as a staff member all those years, I always envisioned Lisa in a state of purposeful bliss, living out that dream at the top of the organization, working close to Miscavige at International Management (same as Gold).
One of the last events that I attended before leaving for good was the IAS Membership Officers' Conference held at PAC. We would eat over at ASHO. I went into the canteen there and to my surprise I saw Lisa. She looked HORRIBLE.
First off, I immediately realized that she got demoted down to ASHO and working in the canteen is definitely a huge bump down the org board. I wondered what happened but I didn't ask her. I was still excited to see her so I approached her and we talked. She was a nervous wreck. She could barely maintain eye contact. She looked completely cowed, totally squashed as a human being. She had no confidence, fluttered around like she wanted to apologize to every one and every thing. It was actually quite difficult to communicate to her and uncomfortable.
At that time, of course, I didn't have all the data but since have learned that she and Ken were on the RPF at Int and I would guess were also in the Hole. Others would have to verify. I am sure she has LOTS of stories to tell. I don't even know if she is still married to Ken.
My point is, that no one should take advice on marriage from a guy who could not even confront how awful his own marital conditions were (are). His wife was in the worst shape ever. I felt terrible for her.
Lisa could have had a great life outside the SO (and Scientology). She was on her way. She had a beautiful voice and great life ahead of her. Instead she was ruined by this organization so, no thanks on that marriage advice.
