Reviews and Media on HBO Documentary Going Clear

A new Scientology smear tactic against Tony Ortega?

Usually, when I go to Google and type Tony Ortega into the search bar, The Underground Bunker link is the very first link that appears on the results page.

Until a moment ago, that is.

Now, a 3-line sponsored link appears first.

It reads:

Truth About Tony Ortega - FreedomMag(dot)org
www(dot)freedommag(dot)org(slash)HBO(slash)Tony_Ortega
Tony Ortega - Discredited source of HBO Documentary, Going Clear

Next to the sponsored link itself is a small Google-generated icon that, when clicked upon, states:
"This ad is based upon your current search terms. Visit Google's ad settings to learn more or opt out."

While I've seen many sponsored ads appear on Google search results pages before, this is the first time I've seen one about Mr. Ortega, so I wondered if similarly-biased sponsored links now appear with simple Google searches for any other name.

Yep.

I typed in Alex Gibney and the sponsored link reads:

Alex Gibney & HBO Facts - FreedomMag(dot)org
www(dot)freedommag(dot)org(slash)HBO
Get the facts about HBO's new documentary, Going Clear

Interestingly enough, no sponsored link appeared when I typed-in these names: Spanky Taylor, Mike Rinder, Lawrence Wright, Paul Haggis, and Marty Rathbun.

I don't get either of those. They're probably paying for those ads/links in few larger cities, based on computers' IP addresses.

I live in a remote area, relatively speaking. I don't get the ads.

Maybe that's just cuz the dick-wads aren't done yet. Seriously, they'll probably hit everyone soon.

I'm starting to get never-ins ask me about it. The publicity and buzz for this doc film is straight up and verticle.

Oh no COB....you lose again!! LOL..

Heh. The stat on this film is an endoscope aimed straight up and vertical at Miscavige's rectum. Enjoy the show, Slappy!

Here's a couple new clips from the HBO documentary on Washington Post:

January 28, 2015 3:52 PM EST - The explosive new documentary "Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief," debuted at the Sundance Film Festival on January 25. In these three clips from the film, former members describe joining the controversial religion and their attempts to escape. The documentary premieres on HBO on March 16. (The Washington Post)

I read your comments above and then asked a few friends in different parts of the US to type-in the names I'd posted here.

Rural Virginia: Sponsored links appeared for Tony Ortega ("TO") & Alex Gibney ("AG").
Denver, CO: Sponsored links appeared for TO & AG
Suburban Michigan: Sponsored link for AG, not TO.
Providence, RI: Sponsored links for TO & AG.
Rural Wyoming: Sponsored links for TO & AG.
Topeka, KS: Sponsored links for TO & AG.
Panhandle, TX/OK: Sponsored links for AG, not TO.
Suburban Massachussetts: No sponsored links for either TO or AG.
Philadelphia, PA: Sponsored link for TO, not AG.
Rural Central Pennsylvania: Sponsored links for TO & AG.
Southern Nevada: No sponsored links for either TO or AG.

This, obviously, is not a large-enough sample to obtain irrefutable evidence, but it hints that this sponsored link campaign (which specifically mentions HBO's Going Clear documentary) may well apply across the US.

It's a new advertising campaign, so perhaps it takes a bit of time?

JB (<----Has very indulgent friends. Thanks to all.:))

The church obviously doesn't give a shit about northern North Carolina, because no sponsored links for either one of these come up on google for me.

Since no one within 300 miles of me has ever heard of Scientology and could care less, that's kind of understandable. :)

Film School Rejects: Scientology Makes Me Want to See Anti-Scientology Movie

http://filmschoolrejects.com/opinions/scientology-making-want-see-anti-scientology-movie.php

* * * * * EXCERPT * * * * *

Then, we got an email from a spokesperson for Scientology, that sealed the deal on my wanting to see the anti-Scientology movie.

In the email, the representative:

Implored us not to be a “mouthpiece for Alex Gibney’s propaganda”

Chastised us for not first contacting the church for comment before posting a review of a movie

For the record, it’s not our policy to contact anyone before feeling double plus free to post our takes on movies we’ve seen (although Chris suggested we should get a statement from Ultron before reviewing Avengers 2). Also for the record, asking someone to post your official statement without vetting often goes better if you don’t open by accusing them of being propagandists by proxy.

* * * * * END EXCERPT * * * * *

Wow. What a comment. 1984, sarcastic 'confusion' of science fiction and explaining how propaganda works.
I'll be happier when the actual list of actors is updated 100%. I've not heard that Neil Gaiman (and others) are confirmed as being in the film, but he is listed on IMDB as rumoured.

may miscavige lose it all

may Co$ b redesigned, reformed, reorganized, rededicated and reconsecrated as CoS

and then when the phoenix rises from the ashes...

it will have a surplus of name recognition in the general populace

My preference would be to have all assets liquidated to pay damages to ALL who have been harmed by this organization.*

*With the exception of the Fort Harrison and the Stupid Power Building across the street. These buildings should go to the City of Clearwater in exchange for the occupation of their city for decades which has caused serious economic damage. I figured that at least one floor of the stupid power building (where the oiliness table resides) would make a wonderful Cult Museum.

I moved from DC in 2008 winter, I've been in the middle of nowhere, in VERY rural Georgia, in the South, since coming down here for my son's graduation from the one high school. So rural and sparsely populated that the US Gov flies it's big spooky triangles out here for test flights.. and other weird stuff...yesterday I walked into my little Farmer's Cooperative Bank and Trust... It is a postage stamp sized bank the size of the 3 bedroom rambler I owned in Virginia but I didn't have a drive thru around back.

There are two teller windows with a gal standing there and another girl sitting at the drive thu window. When I walk in they all started talking about the coming HBO show cause I will occasionally tell people, "Hey, if you are bored put my name in google with the word XENU" and seems its all over town now...They asked if I was going to be in it.... I said no, but the stuff I got sued for posting to the net in 1995 will be, XENU.

So trust me, the word is getting out, this is HUGE, I've never seen anything like this before.

Arnie Lerma XENU

PS: I should mention that my license plate has the letters XENU on it and everyone waves when I go by...

PPS: BTW: The police chief of a town 20 miles up the road is reading Nancy Many's book now.

Edit added

PPPS: And THANK YOU to Jason Beghe for choosing to play the Hank character on Chicago PD... that has been very helpful.

PPPPS: When people here ask me why I chose to live in this area I tell them to google my name and say, when I came here I noted there was nothing here, not even a Wall Mart... not a goddamn thing... and after all I've been through in the last 22 years, 'nothing' sounded absolutely GREAT, as I desperately needed a place to heal.

ABC picked up the coverage of their premiere, using the occasion to re-air their interview with Debbie Cook:
