io9: How Robert Heinlein Went from Socialist to Right-Wing Libertarian
http://io9.com/how-robert-heinlein-went-from-socialist-to-libertarian-1588357827

Excerpt:
In discovering his midlife vocation as a science-fiction writer, Heinlein was aided immeasurably by his second wife Leslyn, who he married in 1932 (an earlier marriage in 1929 fizzled after a year). Both were socialists and sexual radicals—it was an open marriage with each having many lovers—and in the 1930s both were leading figures in the grassroots movement End Poverty in California (EPIC), working to push the Democratic party to the left. When Heinlein started selling science fiction in 1939, Leslyn served as his un-credited collaborator and story-editor ...

Heinlein's leftwing politics got him blacklisted from the Navy, which didn't want his services even during World War II when the military was so desperate for trained recruits that they found office jobs for disabled soldiers. Instead he worked as a civilian engineer in Philadelphia, helping to design the high-altitude pressure suit, a precursor to the astronaut suit. In 1944, Heinlein met Lieutenant Virginia Gerstenfeld, and after the war tried to bring her into his house as part of a ménage à trios. Gerstenfeld accepted but her stay with the Heinlein's was brief and stormy. This wasn't the first love triangle in the Heinlein residence (they had earlier been in a consensual threesome with L. Ron Hubbard), but Leslyn found Virginia threatening so the marriage collapsed in 1947. Heinlein and Gerstenfeld wed the following year, a marriage that would also be open.
EDITED TO ADD:

I posted the above NOT to be homophobic, but as possibly relevant to L. Ron Hubbard's and Scientology;'s views of homosexuality and gay rights. For example, Hubbard's evaluation of gays in Dianetics, gays being 1.1 on the Tone Scale in Science of Survival, etc.

I wish there were more detail. Did Ron blow Heinlein or did Heinlein blow Ron? Did Ron bang Virginia while Virginia blew Heinlein or was it the other way around? I can't tell who was screwing whom but I can tell you this...Ron screwed all of the people who believed in his tek and worked for him in his Cherches.

Did Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard have an affair with Robert Heinlein?

Based on my search results, the closest match is in Chapter 18, note 28. Hubbard lived with the Heinleins for awhile. Virginia told Patterson that Robert had told Virginia that Leslyn had an affair with Hubbard; Leslyn told Forrest J. Ackerman that Robert had an affair with Hubbard.

Dean, I think you missed a couple of possibilities. But I'd suspect the answers to your questions would be yes and yes and yes and yes.

Ron the skin hound.

Tony made a post that, at least initially, largely discredited the allegation:

About that ‘threesome’ with L. Ron Hubbard and the Heinleins

A tip of the hat to Communicator I/C, who last night spotted something interesting at the New Republic. It was a review of a new book about science fiction giant Robert Heinlein which apparently contains a salacious detail about Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard.

Tony updated his post:
UPDATE: It turns out Patterson did refer to this wife-swapping in his first volume, a portion of which is online. Here’s the relevant passage…

In none of the scant surviving correspondence of Leslyn (Heinlein) Mocabee does she refer to her own affairs, though in some rather unbalanced poison-pen letters written after a series of strokes in 1952 (the correspondence with Frederik Pohl is in his papers in the Red Bank, New Jersey, archive), she accuses Robert of sexual infidelities frequent and ongoing. In another context, Robert told Virginia Heinlein of just one affair of Leslyn’s — with L. Ron Hubbard (Virginia Heinlein, taped interview by author, First Series, Tape 2 [September 2000]). Forrest J. Ackerman recalls his shock at Leslyn’s accusation that Robert had a sexual affair with Hubbard — not completly impossible (as Heinlein implied in an essay inExpanded Universe that he had experimented widely with both drugs and unorthodox sexual practices) but improbable. As Ackerman went on to say, “Both of them were such womanizers that they wouldn’t have any time for the same sex! I don’t know if she was hallucinating, or what.” Forrest J. Ackerman, interview by Robert James, June 9, 2000.

So again, there’s a suggestion of Leslyn sleeping with Hubbard, but doubt about Hubbard and Heinlein ever doing the deed.

Since I live in Portland, I tend to yawn at who did what to who sexually, and b4 that... all my life I didn't give a dang, as I didn't assume that it colored the whole person (uh, JFK?). Only care when it is hypocritical, like the Repubs here who are so gay, and so hate themselves that they try to enact stuff as an extension to try to suppress what they deem "evil" in themselves.

I think the Hubs had to be warped sexually, otherwise he wouldn't have glommed onto all the weird stuff where he penned stuff like "Pain & Sex" and instituted 2D rules, and (eff me) ranted that almost everyone born was put through attempted abortions (which, while reading Dianetics, was my first red flag that I ignored...).

I find it interesting, in a way, but I'm more interested in how he fucked over so many people with this effing cult. Sexual peccadilloes be damned. Meh. I actually hang out with some folks (for an ENTIRELY different reason) in a place they call the "poly house"... where "clothing is optional, but tea is mandatory" (omg, not my style--none of that comes into play--there is a D&D game, and I'm good with them... Most of the world would look at the stuff there as uh.... YIKES. But, they are kind, and nice-- don't offend or put their choices onto others, don't judge me for not being "that way", and they sure as fuck haven't started a cult.

To get a better idea of what Hubbard would or would not have got up to, review the OTO levels. Yes they have levels like scientology, but with quite different topics and EPs.

From Robert Heinlein, A Stranger in a Strange Land, and Ron Hubbard:

This is from the BEFORE YOU DO SCIENTOLOGY.COM Discussion thread:

Here's some interesting affairs and possible homosexual conduct with Robert Heinlein and L. Ronnio...you read that here first:

In none of the scant correspondence of Leslyn (Heinlein) Mocabee does she refer to her own affairs, though in some rather unbalanced poison-pen letters written after a series of strokes in 1952 (the correspondence with Frederik Pohl is in his papers in the Red Bank, New Jersey, archive), she accuses Robert of sexual infidelities frequent and ongoing. Of course all of this fits nicely with Ron's Recruit Cycle.
