there is a couple of things I don't quite understand

the phrase "merchant marine" keeps coming up as if it is a job title. It's not.

The job "title" would be (and is) Merchant Mariner - but this is way archaic.

Most usage places it as either - "sailor" or "went to sea."

The phrase as it was used by Andrew's still-in-sister does not make any sense at all. If Andrew went back to Australia and went to work on ships then he will be easy to find - not difficult. There are not that many Australian owned and flagged merchant Marine vessels and ALL the sailors belong to the Union. *added note* - there are a total of 26 Australian flagged and owned vessels - less than Cyprus.

There are a couple of other points - does Andrew have his Seaman's papers?

Believe it or not sailors are not hard to find if they are on nationally flagged vessels.

Ozzie, we're with ya on this one!........Here's to you and your parents and Andrew finding each other sooner rather than later. Let us know if there's anything you need assistance with, from the Aussie end of things, to help make this occur.

    Hey Ozzie,

Have you contacted the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA)?
  5. May I also suggest contacting the Red Cross, in both countries. Part of what they do is to help people reconnect with their family members, and find the lost and missing relatives.

It's just one more via to try. Good luck to you and your parents! :)

    Here's a link that I hope helps:

Do you have any recent pictures of Andy?

    Might help jog some memories...

No sorry I don't - haven't seen my brother in probably 20 some odd years.
It was one of those disconnection things.
My parents did contact the MUA and he has not registered with them, so seems he was never a mariner in australia.
Only other info I have is he was seen sometime in 2007 in Sydney.
However I've searched and my parents have searched and we can't find him.

    Maybe one day..............:bigcry:

    your brother Andrew

    I wrote to you before.
I knew Andrew from Saint Hill.
We were both teenagers, he was slightly younger than me.
A shy, reserved boy back then.

I'm dedicating this poem "The lighthouse letter" to him in the hope he will be found.
Follow the poem's words while watching it as it is truly woderfully written.

I love the one part quoted here:

" Her heartlights sweep the beach at night, the prince perchance to see.
In a lifeboat rolling on the waves, is where I'll wait for thee."

Deep within your cavern dark, a spring of truth abides.
How I hope you find this bottle, for my kisses are inside.

The light outside is dazzling; escape's a costly prize.
But gentle reader, grasp my hand -- and I shall be your eyes.

Behold a gallant queen, her son lost at sea.
She built a lighthouse to the stars, in hopes that he would see.

Her heartlights sweep the beach at night, the prince perchance to see.
In a lifeboat rolling on the waves, is where I'll wait for thee.

Eleven thousand suns and moons have risen, shone and sighed,
o'er the throne of her persistent heart denied.

I've met a king, a prodigal with careworn face so kind.
On foot he bears the banner of a son he's vowed to find.

Behind him stands a motley crew of knights both young and old.
Their merriments are legend; their cause for us is bold.

And upon a mighty web composed of sliver strands,
three sisters weave the orphans' tales to far and distant lands.

Eyes behind wise spectacles are blurred by tears and rain,
and love for shipwrecked families devoured for worldly gain.

Eleven thousand suns and moons, ten million twinkling lights,
have gazed silent on our tragedy -- and this is why they fight.

Their heartlights sweep the beach at night, and lifeboats dot the sea.
May fortune speed you safely here, to reconnect with me.

Thank you! This made me cry - I appreciate you dedicating this to Andrew, you are very kind.

Hopefully one day he will see this or something on the internet and reach out to his family who miss him very much!

    Did you find him?

    Did you find Andy?

I knew him a long time ago... He was shy and gentle.

    I liked him very much.

It would be good to know if he is OK.

Yes, I knew Andrew Barton too. We worked together for several years onboard the Freewinds. I lelft a few years before he did. He was a very good guy, one of those people that you tend to adore because he was incapable of causing any harm to anybody, not even with words.

i am glad to hear that he left. And if he did, sooner or later will try to contact his family. Just keep posting things on the Internet. If he is in acceptable physical and mental shape, he will start browsing through the Internet can happen any minute. He was using computers every day while on the ship, so that would not be a barrier at all.

Let's hope that he is Ok and is just enjoying freedom for the first time in a long time and that he is just working and burning money for a while before he decides it's time to return home.

    That is my deep wish.

Unfortunately no I haven't. My parents and I have checked out all leads and haven't been able to even get a glimmer of a hint of where he might be.

Makes me very sad - but until he decides he wants to be in touch I don't think we are going to find him.:bigcry:

Keep searching as someone said above hopefully he decides it is time to reconnect.

He may have changed his second name? as some in the past have done that.

    *fingers crossed*

    A Message to Andy,

If you come here and read this... Please contact your family. I knew you when we were kids, when we played together at St. Hill

Please... Just let them know, let us all know, that you are OK...

I've read through the thread and can't see any mention of his age. I could guess a range but DOB may be helpful. I'm asking bec. I know some merchant mariners stateside who travel far and wide. Pic would obviously help but I don't think one was available. Middle name or initial, physical description, height, weight, anything like that.

    Arthur Dent,

I played with him when we were kids at St. Hill and we were of a similar age.

I cannot be certain but he was probably born around 1964-1966... I have not seen him since we were young so any detailed description would be useless...

I recall he had dark hair... Might be grey now, or gone.
