What's new

the beginning of the end for careers of Cruise and Travolta?

I take that to mean that you are saying she happily decided to lay low (wayyyyyyy lowwwwww, down under) when she realized that she was being stalked, tracked, bugged and harassed by criminal thug Pellicano, who was a very dangerous mafia affiliate and terrorist?

And that, by extension, her ex husband Tom Cruise, was also represented by other thug criminals like (at that time) Marty Rathbun and (at all times) David Miscavige.

And that, by simple deduction, her beloved ex husband Tom Cruise was HIMSELF a collaborator and instigator and sponsor (he paid for it all) of all that thuggery and terrorism.

Yup, that's right, I said it--Tom Cruise is a facilitator of thuggery, despite his "acting" religious & righteous . He is an "actor" after all.

I sometimes wonder if his (secret) dream of reconciliation with his family will go unfulfilled for that very very reason....his redemption would be so difficult, perhaps impossible....because of these collaborations.

Maybe Scn does this, gets a person deeper in, makes them more criminal, until finally their hands are so dirty they can never leave. The crimes "pulled" were not the pre-Scn crimes, perhaps those never existed. The crimes are at the behest of CoS and viewed as Upstat. But only upstat IN Scientology. To leave Scientology would mean to realize one's one complicity. Maybe that realization - cognition if you will - is too too much to bear.

..

Cruise's career has nothing to do with any other factor than this.

How much box-office do his movies do?

Period.

Right now he is hot again off the worldwide revenues of the latest Mission Impossible blockbuster.

If he starts to bomb regularly, the movies roles won't dry up--just the budgets and he will appear in more modestly budgeted studio films, not commanding his $20M salary and huge profit participation.

If those films tank, he will be relegated to independent films (financed outside the studio) and there is nothing preventing him find finding vehicles that are appropriate for his talent and personna--being surrounded by an outstanding ensemble and helmed by a world-class director.

Hollywood doesn't care about anything other than box-office success and, failing that, secondarily, critical acclaim (i.e. Academy Awards, Golden Globe awards, etc). By way of example, Woody Allen has made films with great regularity which almost never are a box-office winner. His art is driven by words, performances, cinematography and other craft that are not even trying to compete with major studio releases.

If all else fails, there is a starring role in a TV show. It is one of the well-established paths for actors past their prime.

The only other path that has been blazed is politics, but unless Cruise is trying to become mayor of Clearwater or Hemet, there is zero chance that he will not be laughed off the ballot. And he wouldn't even fare well in a tiny, Scientology-controlled venue like CW or Hemet either, so let's just rule the Ronald Reagan Routing Form out.

There is an outside chance that Cruise decides to try his hand at directing, like Clint Eastwood, but no evidence exists yet that he has the talent or vision to do that.

My guess is that his career follows the same trajectory it has been on for quite some time--downward.

Unless he publicly leaves the cult. Then he can go back on Oprah and do a contact assist on those couches.

I know this is an old post but it's relevant.

I agree. Unfortunately at the end of the day this whole thing won't impact Cruise's career nearly as much as we think, or think it should.

First of all, he's - what - in his 50s? He's kind of old to be doing these action movies anyway. I know he does a great job of looking younger than he is but age catches up to all of us, no matter how hard we fight it. He's already got more money than God. He really doesn't need to act in any more movies.

A lot of times if an actor still wants to stay in the game they'll turn to directing and/or producing. Cruise could easily do that. He definitely knows the business and being the control freak and perfectionist he is he might just do a good job of it.

The other thing: interesting Hoaxie bringing up Woody Allen. He's someone I was thinking about in regards to this. He too was vilified in a very public way when he was found to be sleeping with his long time girlfriend's adopted daughter, and also accused of molesting her very young daughter. He was shunned by many for his actions, but long term it really didn't make a dent in his career. He directs movies that win awards, wins awards himself, and gets people like Scarlett Johansson and Emma Stone to star in his movies.

There are other examples of douchebags who bounced back and everyone seemed to forgive and forget: Chris Brown and Michael Vic, to name two.

I know it's not fair and not just, but celebrities get away with stuff. They just do.
