With all due respect, Synthia, that's wrong.

Lisa McPherson died because LRH wrote that the proper way to treat a psychotic break is to lock the person in a room and refuse to communicate with them.

The people who perpetuated this crime really did think they were helping her. They weren't indifferent - they cared. And that's yet another reason why Scientology is dangerous, and why Hubbard was a true piece of shit.

More on this from me.

Yes, thank you :) It's true. Depraved indifference has an exact definition and you are right, their actions didn't fall into that category (possibly some of the "higher ups" could fall into that category) but, in the applying of the policy, somewhere along the way they had to have entered the land of indifference to allow another human being to get that bad before taking her to the hospital.

They had other stuff to worry about. They had their stats and the getting on with the game, and the helping of those who weren't being a problem, like Lisa.

No one gets the way she did without some indifference. The synonyms for indifference are: disregard, apathy, lack of interest, negligence, detachment, coolness, carelessness, coldness, nonchalance, callousness, aloofness, inattention, unconcern, absence of feeling, heedlessness.

There was a whole lot of that going on. There had to be.

I agree with Synthia, it is depraved indifference. Although I do agree with you too. It is complicated.

My opinion is: Brainwashing excuse only goes so far. It doesn't knock all the education, life knowledge, common sense or humanity out of people. It also doesn't give a free pass from personal responsibility.

There is a great deal of fear and a need to follow orders, but in Lisa's case you have a number of human beings following a process that was obviously not working. There was no way they could possibly think they were helping her after a point.
What would have happened if one, or all of them, had insisted she go to hospital before it was too late? She didn't die quickly, it wasn't a surprise.

They cared, just not for Lisa. It doesn't mean I don't care or understand people trapped in that situation. I just feel that there shouldn't be separate rules of conduct or laws for people in cults or out.

I read the comments on Lisa and feel like pitching in, in many ways, but it all fails when I simply think of a true human compassion and official medicine. Lisa had neither, for the reasons mentioned above.
It's not just DM or LRH, it was a combination of it all, Scientology's culture. "Religious Applied Philosophy". The only hope for mankind. Except, Lisa would be still alive as a wog now. Just a thought.

They actively prevented her from escaping from that room.

If she had escaped, emergency services and/or police would have arrived to assess the situation and get her some help. If the Scientologists had done NOTHING she would have saved herself by walking out of that room and someone on the street outside the Ft. Harrison would have called 911. She could have helped herself, get it?

Why didn't the Scientologists in the room help her?

Because they were members of a criminal cult.

It doesn't make any difference why Charles Manson's "family" went out and murdered people at his behest.

The moment they murdered someone in cold blood they became murderers.

Stupidity is not an excuse.

What if a mother left her infant in a locked automobile on a 100 degree day and went inside a church for Sunday mass? And what if the child died? Would she not be a criminal?

What about if she said that her minister told her to go in the church and that God would watch over the baby, not to worry? Would the police let her go in that case?

People get all confused about who said it was okay.

It doesn't matter!

The person is responsible for what they did.

The "caretakers" of Lisa McPherson accepted the responsibility for her care and well being. They grotesquely abused her and allowed her to suffer and die for NO REASON.

They didn't want to kill her. Neither did the mom who left the infant in the car.

But they did.

It's simple.

In the Scientologist's case, they also believed that God told them not to worry. Except his name was Ron.

Some people should have gone to jail.

Like Rathbun who tampered with and destroyed evidence without blinking an eye. All so that the church was free to run more introspection rundowns.

Despicable.

Yeah, but there's still no excuse for not keeping your TRs in.

True that. However, if an SP is being 1.1 (covert hostility) in their epic GPM dramatization, an OT assuming/pretending being 1.5 (hate) to bring an SP out of the implant is totally sensible. That is how you snap them out of being suppressive, obviously. They can't help it, but return to present time. Win. You are welcome.

"Stupidity is not an excuse."

Especially, when someone dies like that.

After she went Clear, did L's and all.

Was it just DM's "out-tech", Marty?

Fucking think about it. And you Mike too.

I like you guys, I've met you.

I just hate politics.

They may be nice guys but they are also taking responsibility for protecting the technology of Scientology.

When any situation arises where the tech is threatened, they instantly switch into liars, criminals and thugs.

Then they are not nice.

Depends on what day you catch them.

Some serial killers are quite charming and affable too.

One of the strangest things about the vicious Scientologist in this video is that the reason he attacked is because the protester was quoting L. Ron Hubbard's scripture verbatim.

On the back of his t-shirt was a paragraph containing Ron's exact words about OT III and in his hand was a small tape player running Ron Hubbards voice, speaking about Xenu.

Think about that.

The protester was promoting Scientology scripture directly from Hubbard.

Scientologists apparently have been very thoroughly programmed to attack anyone they are told to attack, including people who quote Ron.

Bizarre!

It doesn't have to make sense--it's Scientology!

I didn't have to think about it. It is standard scientology. That is obvious.

What dismays me is that when I was in that exact same shit was going on and I didn't then see it for what it was. I do now.

What allowed me ( or perhaps even many of us ) to miss the evil ?

Me ( us ).

Damn.

Thus the "Magik" of Hell Wrong.

Here's some neat little command phrases that immobilized many of us when we should've acted:

"What turns it on turns it off."

"The way out is the way through."

"It takes as long as it takes."

"Never deviate from the C/S."

"Run the process until it's flat."

"Run the process as long as there's TA movement."

"Don't Q & A."

...that's just from the tech side...

...those warm and fuzzy Green Vols get a bit more condemning in their view of humanity...

Can't argue with that.

It's one of the things that really makes me angry about Scientology: It takes good, well-meaning people, and turns them into - well, into the people that sat around Lisa while she died.

And you guys are correct, I missed one point, which is the ruthlesness that Scientology instills.

One of the reasons I am fascinated by Aaron Saxton (and I hope I'm not going to start a shit-storm by bringing him up) is that he is a great example of what Scientology creates. To me, he represents a failed attempt at what Scientology is trying to create - the ruthless, on-TRs, on-purpose homo novis. Except somewhere, a bit of human morality crept in. But he's the most honest example I've seen of that streak that Scientology tries to instill.

Marty Rathbun is the same way, but he's still "in" and/or not honest enough to admit it. If he ever breaks free of Scientology, he's going to be such a boon to the protest movement.

They would have been sent to cramming, where they would be made to review LRH policies and bulletins while others oversaw Lisa's coming death. Right?

Yep, that justifies it all. I'll sit and watch a woman being bitten by cockcroaches while she dies because if I don't do it, someone else will.
And its a hell of a lot bet than being sent to cramming/RPF or causing a flap.

In all seriousness, I don't think the threat of cramming is why they didn't go. I've never met a Scientologist who didn't appreciate a good, justified cram. (Gosh, that sounds dirty.) I remember the first time (at a WISE org) I wrote a cramming order on a high-ranking Scientologist. I was rather nervous to pass her in the halls, but she congratulated me and appreciated the opportunity to get straightened out on a tech issue. Go figure.

I will (almost) always yield to the opinions of ex-Scios, but as someone who walked among them without being one, I think many people are missing a key point: Scientologists really think that the Introspection Rundown was/is the right way to treat a psychotic break.

To a Scientologist, the idea of taking Lisa McPherson to a hospital, where she might be admitted to the psych ward, is the equivalent of sending a beloved old horse to auction, where it will most likely be sent to be slaughter, rendered, and turned into dog food and glue.

I'm not saying it's right, 'cause it ain't. I'm saying that you have to look at the source of such a twisted viewpoint: L. Ron Hubbard.

And you have to look at the fact that those who believe in Hubbard - the churchies, the Indies, the FZers, the Martys and Mikes of this world - still think this is the right thing to do.

You can blame these people for not having a shred of human decency. Yes, they wielded the knife. But why aren't we looking closer at the true source?

Hubbard wrote Lisa McPherson's death warrant when she was still in high school. He killed her as sure as if he had stabbed her himself.

And people are still trying to find the "good" in that self-aggrandizing tub of shit? Fuck me.

Yes, this is a key issue. It gets even worse if you substitute the word "only" for "right" in your bolded sentence above.

The Introspection Rundown sometimes "works" somehow but it seems, IMO, to be completely dependent on the degree of actual care given the individual and the severity of the psychotic break in each individual case.

The Isolation Step is where it runs off the rails when it does, and this is the Zero step of the Rundown itself. When that Step is delivered in an atmosphere of Depraved Indifference it's a recipe for disaster. We've only seen a fraction of these instances reported, in my estimation.

This is quite the trick and really a total testament to the brilliance of the Master Magician, that Grrrrrrrreat Source-rer, Hell Wrong Hu666ard...and that is this.

When a Scientologists gets the idea that someone is cutting the cash infusion into the cult they go stark raving nutso red-faced angry.

(This is NOT the trick.)

Yet, they will never ever see a nickle of the cash!

(Walla! Presto! Alla-peanut-butter-sandwiches! This IS the trick.)

How did he do that?

Not only will these Scienos never see the cash but every single staff member has become a reg of sorts and they work all day FOR NOTHING sucking cash out of parishioners and book buyers, etc. Not only do they work for nothing but when they leave they are handed a bill of money they owe!

No shit!

How the hell did Hu666ard pull this off?

Also, where does all that cash go?

Exactly right! How crazy. How true.

I hesitate a bit to even say this because it is so awful to consider, but I will say it anyways. . .

I am sure that the Scientologists involved in Lisa McPherson's "care" all had stats and reported those stats. And the stats showed that everything was okay. So nothing was done.

What stats were the cult members keeping?

It is hard to even guess. Maybe someone knows and can post it here.

Just speculating but probably something like this:

1. Number of Well Done Hours of standardly delivered Introspection Rundown.

2. Ratio of Quiet Time to Enturbulated Time.

As macabre as it may be, that second statistic of "Quiet Time" is probably the thing that killed her. The cult's valuable final product was to get her to "stop dramatizing" and be quiet.

She is very quiet now.

Very poignant and true...this is part of the backwards of Scientology and that is that it is exactly mirroring psychiatric abuses with medications and surgeries with its use of RDs like this and "ethics".

"Ethics" are psych drugs - they're used to shut people up and to make tractable zombies of people (aka robots) that are quiet and compliant.

Same with this RD.

Scientology is criminal by its own policies of accusing others of its own crimes in that it is ALL about control and uses "ethics" to STFU those that are a bit too loud about being abused.

Great post, HH.

Thanks. Reading this thread I keep thinking about the standard of care that was readily available for Lisa, if the supremely (and delusional) Scientologists had not interfered. In fact she was already in a perfectly fine medical institution and they came and took her out because they had "knowingness" of what she needed.

They put their "knowingness" above a formal medical education. That is the point where hubris has long ago crossed the threshold into criminality. Quacks and assorted medical frauds are thrown in jail.

The short list of CERTIFIED SKILLS that Scientologists pretended they were above include:

MEDICAL SPECIALIST (cardiologist, oncologist, neurosurgeon, psychiatrist. . .)

MEDICAL DOCTOR IN HOSPITAL FACILITY

EMERGENCY ROOM PHYSICIANS & NURSES

PARAMEDICS (first responders)

CERTIFIED HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS (home, clinics. . .)

CERTIFIED FIRST AID GIVER

CONCERNED CITIZEN (calling 911)

UNCONCERNED BYSTANDER (doing nothing)

SCIENTOLOGIST

Keep in mind that the Scientologist ranks themselves ABOVE all the others and is totally certain of the others' inferiority. A Scientologist who has read a couple page "HCOB" by a sociopathic liar believes themselves fully capable of taking a patient suffering a complete mental breakdown out of a hospital and away from the brilliant doctors who have spent a over a decade learning and perfecting their medical skills.

A Scientologist actually thinks that one HCOB (Introspection Rundown) is better than the 12 years of study required to become a physician.

Also remember that the Scientologist is exponentially worse than all of the levels above them, including the "Unconcerned Bystander" who would not actively prevent Lisa McPherson from running around on the street until a "Concerned Citizen" helped her until 911 responded.

It is hard to fathom how destructive Scientology's behavior is, but of this we can be certain--their tech and their application of it killed her.

And don't forget the One Scientologist who is a notch above the rest Freedom Medal of Valor winner Tom Cruise. He knows that he is the only one that can do something about it. He is the only one who can help.

If all Scientologists would have this level of certainty and this level of dedication we certainly would have end of game.

I can't tell you how surreal it has been being treated for cancer by healthcare professionals. It's an amazing experience. The level of compassion and understanding and real competence is almost hard for me to believe. No routing forms and no TRS and no correction lists and no assists or advance programs.

I sincerely shudder at the horror I would have endured if I was still "on lines" as an "on purpose" Scientologist. That is of course if I had been diagnosed at all. Just a few years ago I probably wouldn't have taken time off post to get a mammogram. It would have interfered with the stat evolution or some other hamster wheel activity.

Sadly I remember enforcing all those new Enrollment forms and crap after Lisa lost her life. I really blamed her for the DevT of having to be extra cautious with low toned dbs and psychotics. I blamed her for the PTS atmosphere at Flag after that. The increased paranoia in every reg cycle. The mania. The dread. The fear.

I owe Lisa McPhearson quite a bit. Her story won't let me forget who and what I became as a true believer. In that way she very well may have saved my life.
